Topic 3: Subject Mat ter & Style in Cont. Arts

08 – 16 – 23

❖ Main Key points

→ Subject Matter refers to what the artwork is about. It is the general idea presented
by the artwork that the artist aimed to convey.
→ It is difficult to examine the Subject Matter and identify as it is open to the
perspective of everyone’s thoughts and idea. The only one to truly understand the
reasoning of the artwork is the artist themself.
→ Examples of Subject Matters are: Religion, Abstract, Still Life, History, Landscape,
People, Animal, etc.
→ A Subject Matter differs from Theme as the Theme is the conceptualized “story”
behind the artwork whilst Subject matter is simply the idea.

• Subject Matter
o Refers to what the artwork is about
o It is the visual or narrative focus of the work
o The main idea that is presented in the art
o The subject in art is basically the essence of the piece → Identifying the purpose
o Examples: Religious, Abstract
o Subject Matter is more general than of the title of the work.
o Refers to the topic or focal point that an art piece is built around.
o This may be a person, still life, landscape, building, persons, animals, history,
and other foundational elements.
o It is important to understand the subject matter of a piece of art to understand
the meaning of the piece of art overall.

o Guide Questions in looking for Subject Matter

> What is depicted in this artwork?
> What is the artist trying to express to the world?

o Subject Matter in Contemporary Art

> People (Portraiture)
> Arrangements of Objects (Still life)
> The natural world (landscape or any other scape)
> Abstractions (Non-objective)

Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions 11- Onesta’

Contemporary Arts – 1st Quarter Prayer leader, dasal nalang natin to bhe

o Importance of Subject Matter

> It brings the artist’s perspective to its portrayal.

o An artist may have a certain vision or purpose for their artwork. That said, the
artist can’t control your interpretation of their art. The way the viewer perceives
is what makes contemporary art.

o Why it is difficult to identify the Subject Matter

> Audience
> Without direct communication with the artist
> Must decipher the artist’s thoughts by observing the work’s subject and form.

o As the viewer of a piece of art, its your job to analyze and consider it carefully to
make your own case for what the subject matter is.
o Determining the subject matter of an art piece isn’t like solving a math equation
– there isn’t one solid answer that everyone should arrive at.
o For every piece of art you encounter, ask yourself what you believe the artist was
trying to convey through their work. Make a case to justify your reasoning.

o Difference between Subject Matter and Theme

> Subject Matter – What the work Is actually about
> Theme – Define the “story” behind a work in a particular genre or style with a
particular motif or look.
