problems.

І. ПРИГАДАЙ, ТИ ЦЕ ЗНАЄШ!
- Read the statement. Explain how do you
understand it, give your comment:

“ THE FUTURE OF OUR PLANET IN OUR HANDS!”

- Do you agree with these words?

- Really, every day there are more and more animals and plants which are in
danger of becoming extinct. Their natural habitats are destroyed by human activity.
Forests are cleared for farming or housing. Oceans and rivers are polluted. The seas
and the air will become more and more polluted. The future might be wonderful or
might be terrible – it’s our choice.

- The topic of our course іs “Environmental problems”.

- You’ll..
watch the interesting video about environmental problems;
read the text about our nature, environmental problems.
discuss the main problems for humanity;
find the ways of solving the ecological problems.
– We’ve spoken about the most important problems of the planet, such as litter, air
pollution, water pollution, the destruction of the forest.
ІІ. ЗРОЗУМІЙ, ЦЕ ПРОСТО!
1) – When we speak about the environment, what words do you associate
with this topic? Look at the pictures and explain the following:

What is the
environment?

- Good! Answer the questions:

 What are some types of pollution?

 What can you do to help prevent pollution?
 Who do you think is more responsible for pollution, individual people or the
government?
2) - Now, I suggest to you learn the new words. Open your vocabulary and write
down new words and translate them.

Environmental problems.
Young people today are more aware of the
environment than ever before. This is the first really
“green” generation. Mark Farrell asked Claudia, 19,
from London about her opinion on this problem.
There are lots of environmental problems – the
greenhouse effects, acid rain, the hole in the ozone
layer, and so on. There’s also air pollution causing
asthma. And there’s nuclear waste and other kinds of
toxic waste.
But my problem is that I don’t feel I can do anything about it myself. It’s all so
big and out of control.
How can you have clear opinions about all these scientific things?
You would have to be an expert on nuclear energy, on the weather, on chemistry,
on everything. And another thing … only the politicians are in a position to do
anything about it, and they don’t seem to care that much. It’s not worth voting for the
Green Party, because they’re so small. And the other parties don’t want to do
anything serious because it would be unpopular. I suppose in the
end things will get so bad that they’ll just have to do something.
4) Note with “T” if the statement is true, and with “F” if it is false.
a) The greenhouse effect, acid rain, the hole in ozone layer are
environmental problems.
b) There’s air pollution preventing asthma.
c) Claudia doesn’t feel she can do anything about it herself.
d) You would have to be an expert on nuclear energy, on the weather and
so on.
e) Claudia thinks that only children are in a position to do anything about
environmental problems.
f) Claudia thinks that the politicians don’t seem to care about these
problem.
g) It’s worth voting for the Yellow Party because it’s big.
h) Claudia thinks that many parties don’t want to do anything serious.
i) Claudia thinks that in the end things will get better.

5) Match the words with their definitions

1. Litter a) an area set aside and carefully

panned with all the necessary
elements for preserving nature
2. Fauna b) organisms physical and biological surroundings
3. Flora c) warming of temperatures around the world
4. Garbage can d) layer of gasses that surrounds the Earth including the
troposphere and stratosphere
5. Global warming e) animals or animal life
6. Climate f) plants or plant life
7. Atmosphere g) aspects of the weather such as temperature rainfall
light air movement
8. Biosphere h) you can even kill with this dangerous thing
9. Pollution j) to make dirty air water everything around us
10. Acid rain k) rain polluted by chemical compounds that have been
released into the atmosphere from factories
6) Work above text “We and our nature”.
- Read the text and fill in the blanks with the words given
below.
WE AND OUR NATURE
Our life becomes more __(1)__ and more
interesting. But we seldom think that the majority
of__(2)__ bring harm to a man. Today the greatest
problem for humanity is__(3)__. Pollution is
the__(4)__ of the environment including air, water
and land. This problem is__(5)__ typical for
heavily__(6)__ cities and towns where
metallurgical plants, steel mills, mines, chemical
plants are situated. Uncontrolled emissions of
harmful__(7)__ and dust pollute everything around us. Very often they are the reason
of__(8)__ rains poisoning earth and water, destroying forests and even buildings.
It is worth__(9)__ that one third of all emissions into the atmosphere originates
from automobile transport.
During some period of time it was considered that__(10)__ power stations were
safe. In 1986__(11)__ disaster showed that nuclear energy can be extremely
dangerous. Large areas of agricultural and forest lands of Ukraine, Belarus and
Russia will remain unsafe for a man for eight thousand years.
Another problem of big cities is __(12)__. The wastes from plants and __(13)__
contaminate water and soil. Household wastes such as all kinds of plastics and so on
remain__(14)__ for tens of years. Another reason of soil poisoning is the use of
materials which help agricultural products to grow fast but these products
are__(15)__ for man.
The list of problems may be endless –__(16)__effect, ozone holes, etc. It is clear
that it is necessary to use__(17)__ equipment at the plants and factories look for
wasteless technologies, learn to use natural sources of energy, such as wind and sun,
use new recycling technologies.
