TITLE: Induction Furnace Refractory Relining Page 1 of 2
Process (20/15 MT Hot Metal)

1. PURPOSE : This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlines the process for relining the refractory
lining of a 20/15 MT capacity induction furnace used in hot metal production, following the
Quality Management System (QMS) guidelines.

2. SCOPE : This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the relining process of the 20/15 MT induction
furnace, including:

 Refractory technicians
 Maintenance personnel
 Quality control inspectors

3. MARK MANDATORY PPE USED UNDER OPERATION PROCESS:

Safety Helmet Safety Goggles Face Shield Safety Gloves Safety Shoe Safety Mask Apron/FR Suit

4. QMS, OH&S, EMS, ISOLATION CONSIDERATIONS:

4.1 QMS CONSIDERATION (Linkage with QMS Risk Register
& Opportunities):
4.2 OH&S CONSIDERATION (HIRA Doc No. to be linked):
4.3 EMS CONSIDERATION (Aspect No. to be linked):
4.4 ISOLATION CONSIDERATIONS

PROCEDURE:

Materials and Equipment

 Required Refractory materials (as per furnace specifications) - Include specifications for Silica
Ramming Mass and Boric Acid

Silica Ramming Mass:

o Mostly Silica (SiO2) - at least 98.9%

o Various particle sizes for different furnace zones (fine for tight packing, coarse for main
lining)
o High temperature resistance (over 1600°C)
o Good shock resistance and low thermal conductivity
o Requires proper compaction for high density and low moisture content

Boric Acid (H3BO3):

o Binds silica particles for a strong lining (0.2% to 5.0% by weight)

o Melts and converts to Boric Oxide (B2O3) during heating for binding
o Water soluble - moisture control is crucial

 Hand and power tools for demolition and installation

 Mixing equipment for refractory mortar (if applicable)
 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - including safety glasses, gloves, respirators, and fire retardant
clothing
 Measuring instruments (tape measures, calipers)
 Inspection tools (borescope, thickness gauge)

SL. NO. ACTIVITY REFERENCE RESPONSIBILITY

1 Pre-Relining Activities

 1.1.1 Shutdown and Isolation: Ensure the

furnace is shut down, isolated from power, and
cooled to a safe temperature for personnel entry.
 1.1.2 Permit Issuance: Obtain a work permit for
hot work and confined space entry (if applicable).
 1.1.3 Pre-Relining Inspection: Conduct a
thorough inspection of the furnace shell, cooling
system, and electrical components for any signs
of damage. Document the findings.
 1.1.4 Material Preparation:
o Verify the received refractory materials
match the approved specifications and
quantities.
o Perform any necessary pre-work on the
materials as per manufacturer's
instructions (e.g., drying).
