Identify some ways in which music communicate and affects you as a student and as a member
of a group. Support your answer.

improving classroom performance on learning.

Activity 1

List down some of the characteristics of Romantic music. Explain each. Can music cure some of
our illnesses. How?

Answer:

1. Freedom of form and design. It was more personal and emotional.

2. Song-like melodies (lyrical), as well as many chromatic harmonies and discords.

3. Dramatic contrasts of dynamics and pitch.

4. Big orchestras, due mainly to brass and the invention of the valve.

5. Wide variety of pieces (i.e. songs up to five hour Wagner operas)

6. Programme music (music that tells a story)

7. Shape was brought to work through the use of recurring themes.

8. Great technical virtuosity.

9. Nationalism (a reaction against German influence).

For addition does music cure some of our illnesses, A growing body of research shows that
music therapy and mental health are connected. Music is an important outlet for healing, even
for mental illnesses. Its expressive, emotional nature can help you become more self-aware and
bring about emotions you might be suppressing.

Activity 2

If you are allowed only one song to listen to, what would it be? Why? Does it ring to your mind
some sorrowful or happy thoughts of the past?

Answer:

Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel.

Not because I absolutely love it, or because I’m gonna rock out to it in our house every day. But
because I’m never going to hate it, and it’s better than white noise. Plus, classic music helps me
study, and when I can’t sleep it works better than sleeping pills.
