une grande personne. J’ai une
excuse sérieuse : cette grande
personne est le meilleur ami que
j’ai au monde. J’ai une autre
excuse : cette grande personne
peut tout comprendre, même les
livres pour enfants. J’ai une
troisième excuse : cette grande
personne habite la France où elle
a faim et froid. Elle a besoin
d’être consolée. Si toutes ces
excuses ne suffisent pas, je veux
bien dédier ce livre à l’enfant
qu’a été autrefois cette grande
personne. Toutes les grandes
personnes ont d’abord été des
enfants. (Mais peu d’entre elles
s’en souviennent.) Je corrige
donc ma dédicace :

dedicating this book to a grown-up.
I have a very good reason for this:
this grown-up is my best friend in
the whole world. And I have
another reason: this grown up can
understand anything, even books
for children. And I have a third;
this grown-up lives in France,
where he is cold and hungry. He
needs cheering up. And if all these
reasons aren't enough, then I'd like
to dedicate it to the child this
grown-up used to be. All grown-
ups started life as children. (But not
many of them remember that.) So I
correct my dedication::

Lorsque j’avais six ans j’ai
vu, une fois, une magnifique
image, dans un livre sur la forêt
vierge qui s’appelait Histoires
vécues. Ça représentait un
serpent boa qui avalait un fauve.
Voilà la copie du dessin.
On disait dans le livre : « Les
serpents boas avalent leur proie
tout entière, sans la mâcher.
Ensuite ils ne peuvent plus
bouger et ils dorment pendant les
six mois de leur digestion ».
J’ai alors beaucoup réfléchi
sur les aventures de la jungle et, à

Once when I was six years old I
saw a wonderful picture in a book
about the ancient forests called
True Stories. It was a picture of a
boa constrictor swallowing an
animal. Here is a copy of the
drawing.
It said in the book, 'Boa
constrictors swallow their prey
whole, without chewing it. Then
they can't move any more, so they
go to sleep for the six months they
need to digest it'.
Afterwards I couldn't stop
thinking about the adventures in
mon tour, j’ai réussi, avec un
crayon de couleur, à tracer mon
premier dessin. Mon dessin
numéro 1. Il était comme ça :
J’ai montré mon chef-d’œuvre
aux grandes personnes et je leur
ai demandé si mon dessin leur
faisait peur.
Elles m’ont répondu : «
Pourquoi un chapeau ferait-il
peur ? »
Mon dessin ne représentait
pas un chapeau. Il représentait un
serpent boa qui digérait un
éléphant. J’ai alors dessiné
l’intérieur du serpent boa, afin
que les grandes personnes
puissent comprendre. Elles ont
toujours besoin d’explications.
Mon dessin numéro 2 était comme
ça :
the jungle, and in my turn, I too
managed to draw my first picture,
with a coloured pencil. My drawing
Number 1. It looked like this:
I showed my masterpiece to the
grown-ups, and asked them if my
drawing frightened them.
They answered, "Why would
we be frightened by a hat?"
My drawing was not a picture
of a hat. It was a picture of a boa
constrictor digesting an elephant.
So I drew the inside of the boa
constrictor, to make everything
clear to the grown-ups. They
always need to have things
explained to them. My drawing
Number 2 came out like this:
 Les grandes personnes m’ont
conseillé de laisser de côté les
dessins de serpents boas ouverts
ou fermés, et de m’intéresser
plutôt à la géographie, à
l’histoire, au calcul et à la
grammaire. C’est ainsi que j’ai
abandonné, à l’âge de six ans,
une magnifique carrière de
peintre. J’avais été découragé par
l’insuccès de mon dessin numéro
1 et de mon dessin numéro 2. Les
grandes personnes ne
comprennent jamais rien toutes
seules, et c’est fatigant, pour les
enfants, de toujours leur donner
des explications…
J’ai donc dû choisir un autre
métier et j’ai appris à piloter des
avions. J’ai volé un peu partout
dans le monde. Et la géographie,
c’est exact, m’a beaucoup servi.
Je savais reconnaître, du premier
coup d’œil, la Chine de l’Arizona.
C’est utile, si l’on s’est égaré
pendant la nuit.
The grown-ups' advice was to
give up my drawings of boa
constrictors, seen from the inside
and the outside, and concentrate on
history, geography, arithmetic and
grammar instead. That was how, at
the age of six, I came to abandon a
magnificent career as a painter. I
was discouraged by the lack of
success of drawing Number 1 and
drawing Number 2. Grown-ups can
never understand anything on their
own, and it's exhausting for
children always to have to be
explaining things to them …
So I had to choose a different
career and I learnt to fly
aeroplanes. I flew pretty much all
over the world. And, to be fair, the
geography helped a lot. I could tell
China from Arizona at first sight.
And this can be useful, if you get
lost at night.
 J’ai ainsi eu, au cours de ma
vie, des tas de contacts avec des
tas de gens sérieux. J’ai
beaucoup vécu chez les grandes
personnes. Je les ai vues de très
près. Ça n’a pas trop amélioré
mon opinion.
Quand j’en rencontrais une
qui me paraissait un peu lucide,
je faisais l’expérience sur elle de
mon dessin n°1 que j’ai toujours
conservé. Je voulais savoir si elle
était vraiment compréhensive.
Mais toujours elle me répondait :
« C’est un chapeau. » Alors je ne
lui parlais ni de serpents boas, ni
de forêts vierges, ni d’étoiles. Je
me mettais à sa portée. Je lui
parlais de bridge, de golf, de
politique et de cravates. Et la
grande personne était bien
contente de connaître un homme
aussi raisonnable…
Over the course of my life I've
had lots of contacts with lots of
serious-minded people. I've spent a
lot of time living among grown-
ups. I've studied them at very close
quarters. That hasn't made me think
any better of them.
Whenever I met one who
seemed at all sensible, I tried out an
experiment. I showed them my
drawing number 1, which I had
always kept. I wanted to know if
they had real understanding. But
they always said, "It's a hat." So I
never talked to them about boa
constrictors, or ancient forests, or
stars. I went down to their level. I
talked to them about bridge, about
golf, about politics and ties. And
the grown-up would be very happy
to have met such a sensible
person …

J’ai ainsi vécu seul, sans
personne avec qui parler
véritablement, jusqu’à une panne
dans le désert du Sahara, il y a
six ans. Quelque chose s’était
cassé dans mon moteur. Et comme
je n’avais avec moi ni
mécanicien, ni passagers, je me
préparai à essayer de réussir, tout
seul, une réparation difficile.
C’était pour moi une question de
vie ou de mort. J’avais à peine de
l’eau à boire pour huit jours.
Le premier soir je me suis
donc endormi sur le sable à mille
milles de toute terre habitée.
J’étais bien plus isolé qu’un
naufragé sur un radeau au milieu
de l’océan. Alors vous imaginez
ma surprise, au lever du jour,
quand une drôle de petite voix
m’a réveillé. Elle disait :…
« S’il vous plaît… dessine-moi
un mouton !
— Hein !
— Dessine-moi un
mouton… »
II
So I lived alone, without
anyone I could really talk to, until
six years ago, when my plane
crashed in the Sahara desert. There
was something wrong with the
engine. I had no mechanic with me,
and no passengers, so I had to try
to get a difficult repair job done all
on my own. It was a matter of life
or death for me. I had barely
enough water to last me eight days.
So the first night I fell asleep
on the sand, a thousand miles from
any inhabited place. I was much
more isolated than any
shipwrecked sailor on a raft in the
middle of the ocean. So you can
just imagine my surprise, at
daybreak, when a funny little voice
woke me up, saying:
— Please … draw me a sheep!
— What?
— Draw me a sheep.
 J’ai sauté sur mes pieds
comme si j’avais été frappé par la
foudre. J’ai bien frotté mes yeux.
J’ai bien regardé. Et j’ai vu un
petit bonhomme tout à fait
extraordinaire qui me considérait
gravement. Voilà le meilleur
portrait que, plus tard, j’ai réussi
à faire de lui.
I jumped to my feet as if I'd
been struck by lightning. I rubbed
my eyes hard. I looked all around
me. And I set eyes on a quite
extraordinary little gentleman,
looking at me solemnly. Here is the
best picture of him that I could
manage, afterwards.

This is not my fault. I was put off
from my artistic career by the
grown-ups, when I was six, and I
never learned to draw, except for

un mouton… »
Quand le mystère est trop
impressionnant, on n’ose pas
désobéir. Aussi absurde que cela
me semblât à mille milles de tous
les endroits habités et en danger
de mort, je sortis de ma poche
une feuille de papier et un
stylographe. Mais je me rappelai
alors que j’avais surtout étudié la
boa constrictors seen from the

eyed with astonishment. Don't
forget I was a thousand miles from
any inhabited place. Yet the little
gentleman didn't seem to be either
lost, or dying from exhaustion,
hunger, thirst, or fear. He didn't

the middle of a desert, a thousand
miles from any inhabited place.
When at last I managed to get a
word out, I said:
— But what are you doing
there?
So he said it again, very gently,
as if it was a very important matter:
— Please… draw me a sheep…
Faced with such an
overwhelming mystery, you daren't
disobey. Ridiculous as it seemed, a
thousand miles from any inhabited
place, with my life in danger, I took
a pen and a piece of paper out of
my pocket. But then I remembered
that I had mostly studied
geography, history, arithmetic and

besoin d’un mouton. Dessine-moi
un mouton. »
Alors j’ai dessiné.

As I'd never drawn a sheep, I
re-drew for him one of the only
two drawings that I could do. The
one of the boa constrictor from the
outside. And I was flabbergasted to
hear the little gentleman reply:
— No! No! I don't want some
elephant inside a boa constrictor. A
boa constrictor is very dangerous,
and an elephant very unwieldy.
Where I come from, everything is
very small. I need a sheep. Draw
me a sheep.
So I drew one.

— Ce n’est pas une chose. Ça
vole. C’est un avion. C’est mon
avion. »
Et j’étais fier de lui apprendre
que je volais. Alors il s’écria :
« Comment ! tu es tombé du
ciel !
— Oui, fis-je modestement.
— Ah ! ça c’est drôle… »
Et le petit prince eut un très
joli éclat de rire qui m’irrita
beaucoup. Je désire que l’on
prenne mes malheurs au sérieux.
Puis il ajouta :
It took me a long time to
understand where he came from.

seemed to listen to mine. It was
from his chance remarks that, little

— Oh! How funny …
And the little prince broke out
into a lovely peal of laughter that
really annoyed me. I want people
to take my misfortunes seriously.
Then he added:

l’une d’elles, il lui donne pour
nom un numéro. Il l’appelle par
exemple : « l’astéroïde 325 ».
So I had learnt something else,
very important: that the planet he
came from was hardly bigger than
a house.
But that didn't really surprise
me very much. I knew perfectly
well that besides the great, big
planets like Earth, Jupiter, Mars,
Venus and the others that have been
given a name there are hundreds of
others that are sometimes so tiny
that it's very hard to spot them with
a telescope. When an astronomer
discovers one of these he gives it a
number instead of a name. For
instance, he might call it 'Asteroid
325'.

thinking that the planet the little
prince came from is Asteroid B-
612. This asteroid was only spotted
through a telescope once, in 1909,
by a Turkish astronomer.

of his discovery at an international

demandent : « Quel âge a-t-il ?

What is his father's salary?" Only

hausseront les épaules et vous
traiteront d’enfant ! Mais si vous
leur dites : « La planète d’où il
venait est l’astéroïde B 612 »
alors elles seront convaincues, et
elles vous laisseront tranquille
avec leurs questions. Elles sont
comme ça. Il ne faut pas leur en
vouloir. Les enfants doivent être
très indulgents envers les grandes
personnes.
Mais, bien sûr, nous qui
comprenons la vie, nous nous
moquons bien des numéros !

They're like that. You mustn't
blame them. Children have to be
very tolerant towards grown-ups.
For sure, those of us who
understand about life couldn't care
less about numbers! I would have

C’est donc pour ça encore que
j’ai acheté une boîte de couleurs
et des crayons. C’est dur de se
remettre au dessin, à mon âge,
quand on n’a jamais fait d’autres
tentatives que celle d’un boa
fermé et celle d’un boa ouvert, à
l’âge de six ans ! J’essaierai, bien
sûr, de faire des portraits le plus
ressemblants possible. Mais je ne
suis pas tout à fait certain de
réussir. Un dessin va, et l’autre ne
ressemble plus. Je me trompe un

fois, je fais exception à ma
réserve. Je dis : « Enfants ! Faites
attention aux baobabs ! » C’est
pour avertir mes amis du danger
qu’ils frôlaient depuis longtemps,
comme moi-même, sans le

rendre compte de ce qu’il fait, ce

disais : « La fleur que tu aimes
n’est pas en danger… Je lui
dessinerai une muselière, à ton
mouton… Je te dessinerai une
armure pour ta fleur… Je… » Je
ne savais pas trop quoi dire. Je
me sentais très maladroit. Je ne
savais comment l’atteindre, où le
rejoindre… C’est tellement
mystérieux, le pays des larmes !

mois que nous parlons ensemble.
— Un mois ?
— Oui. Trente minutes. Trente
jours ! Bonsoir. »

que j’aime dans la vie, c’est
dormir.

pas s’avouer, c’est qu’il regrettait
cette planète bénie à cause,
surtout, des mille quatre cent
quarante couchers de soleil par
vingt-quatre heures !

La Terre n’est pas une planète
quelconque ! On y compte cent
onze rois (en n’oubliant pas, bien
sûr, les rois nègres), sept mille
géographes, neuf cent mille
businessmen, sept millions et
demi d’ivrognes, trois cent onze
millions de vaniteux, c’est-à-dire
environ deux milliards de grandes
personnes.
Pour vous donner une idée
des dimensions de la Terre je vous
dirai qu’avant l’invention de
l’électricité on y devait entretenir,
sur l’ensemble des six continents,
une véritable armée de quatre
cent soixante-deux mille cinq cent
onze allumeurs de réverbères.
Vu d’un peu loin ça faisait un
effet splendide. Les mouvements
de cette armée étaient réglés
comme ceux d’un ballet d’opéra.
D’abord venait le tour des
allumeurs de réverbères de
Nouvelle-Zélande et d’Australie.
Puis ceux-ci, ayant allumé leurs

travaillaient deux fois par an.

place publique de vingt milles de

pourrait entasser l’humanité sur
le moindre petit îlot du Pacifique.
Les grandes personnes, bien
sûr, ne vous croiront pas. Elles
s’imaginent tenir beaucoup de
place. Elles se voient importantes
comme des baobabs. Vous leur
conseillerez donc de faire le
calcul. Elles adorent les chiffres :
ça leur plaira. Mais ne perdez pas

what I told you about lamplighters.

of our planet to those who are
strangers to it. Men take up very
little space on the planet. If the two
billion people who inhabit the

take up plenty of space. They think

musique. Et puis regarde ! Tu
vois, là-bas, les champs de blé ?
Je ne mange pas de pain. Le blé
pour moi est inutile. Les champs
de blé ne me rappellent rien. Et
ça, c’est triste ! Mais tu a des
cheveux couleur d’or. Alors ce
sera merveilleux quand tu
m’auras apprivoisé ! Le blé, qui
est doré, me fera souvenir de toi.
Et j’aimerai le bruit du vent dans
le blé… »
Le renard se tut et regarda
longtemps le petit prince :
« S’il te plaît… apprivoise-
moi ! dit-il.
— Nothing's perfect, — sighed

source de malentendus. Mais,
chaque jour, tu pourras t’asseoir
un peu plus près… »
Le lendemain revint le petit
prince.

prince, je ne te souhaitais point
de mal, mais tu as voulu que je
t’apprivoise…
— Bien sûr, dit le renard.
— Mais tu vas pleurer ! dit le
petit prince.

De nouveau je me sentis glacé

mangé la fleur... »

mangé une rose...
Regardez le ciel. Demandez-
vous : « Le mouton oui ou non a-
t-il mangé la fleur ? » Et vous
verrez comme tout change...
Et aucune grande personne ne
comprendra jamais que ça a
tellement d’importance !

 Postscript

The Colour of Corn

It is truly an honour for me to be able to write this postscript, as it

has been to prepare these new editions of 'The Little Prince', particularly
in these bilingual editions. I hope they may facilitate the reading of the
author's original text, in his own words, even for those who don't speak
French well, so that they can appreciate all of its extraordinary evocative
force.
However I had no wish to write a postscript that was too serious and
boring because I think, actually, the Little Prince wouldn't like that. So
before starting to write I went for a little walk around my planet, in the
world of grown-ups and children, and in the one of my daydreams and
memories. And I came back with a very short story, or perhaps more an
anecdote, that I could tell you about my little asteroid-star, in case, one
day, the Little Prince might come to visit me.
 A short little story that I will try to tell you, readers, as well, instead
of the boring postscript that I ought to write, and which I am sure that
not even grown-ups would ever read…

Today, as usual, since I now have to play my part in the grown-up

world almost all the time, I should have carried my usual hundred and
one tasks, paying attention to the vortex of time and the life that swirls
around me.
And instead, I switched off the alarm clock and went back to sleep.
I got up late; and had breakfast looking at the sun.
Then I went out and visited the hairdresser. I had my hair cut very,
very short, so I would be better able to feel the caresses of the breeze
that comes with the springtime and to hear the stories it tells as it sweeps
through the streets and the sky.
Finally I made for the woods, but not to look for mushrooms or even
just to go for a walk, but to sow cherry trees.
I did it to remind me of a loved one who used to tell me fairy tales
when I was a little boy, and who, above all others, set me on the literary
path: my grandmother.
 When I was a little boy, walking in the chestnut woods with her, I
often happened to see cherry trees, so I asked her, whoever would have
planted these cherry trees in the middle of the woods, among the wild
plants. The first few times I asked, my grandmother replied that they had
been planted by the wind or the birds. But seeing as I kept on asking her
again and again, it was clear that I wasn't at all satisfied with her answer,
so she decided to make up a story…
My grandmother loved telling stories, almost as much as reciting the
poems she had learnt by heart.
 The story she made up was really a sequel to Antoine de
Saint'Exupery's 'The Little Prince', which we had by then read together
several times. It was about a hypothetical return to Earth of the Little
Prince, so he could meet his friend the fox again.
That fox who had allowed himself to be tamed, after telling him how
to do it; that fox whom he would remember after he left him and who,
every so often, would have felt nostalgia for the moments they had spent
together, whenever he happened to see the colour of corn.
That fox who had wanted to belong to him, as the rose belonged to
him, so he could love him and recognise him even among a thousand
others.

Her story told of what happened to the Little Prince who had come
back to Earth and wandered all over the planet searching for his fox. In
order to leave a sign that he had passed by, he decided to sow some
seeds along the way. These would remind the fox of his rose, in the
places where the fox might be looking at the colour of the corn and
thinking of him.
That was how he came to think of sowing red poppies in the
cornfields.
 However he ended up searching for the fox in the mountains,
covered with forests of chestnuts, where no corn could grow. But how
similar to corn were the chestnut trees, because of the opportunity they
offered for harvesting flour but above all for the colour of their autumn
leaves. So there, instead of poppies, to remind the fox of his red rose in
the middle of the colour of golden corn, in the middle of these fields of
trees, he decided to sow the seeds of trees with red fruit, the cherries.
So that's why you can find them in the woods. The very same trees
that I used to ask my grandmother about who had planted them … just as
you can find poppies in the cornfields.
'The little prince came this way', she said.
 And that is why today, when I wanted to think about what to write in
the postscript for this edition of the 'Little Prince'; to remember my
grandmother and the stories she used to tell me; to revisit her among the
stories and memories, and in the very world of grown-ups and children
where the Little Prince is still looking for his fox … I went for a walk in
the woods and sowed cherry trees along the way.

According to an ancient Celtic legend it is said that on the night of
Samhain, a night that is outside the cycle of time because it belongs
neither to the Old Year that has just ended nor the New Year that has not
yet begun, it may be possible to discern, in the mists that separate the
world of the living from that of the spirits, a man who wanders in search
of the road to Paradise. He holds his lantern in a hollowed out pumpkin,
and inside it there would be a burning firebrand from the embers of hell.
That man is Jack!
Jack O’ Lantern.
But who was Jack?
The only ordinary man who has a feast day dedicated to him that by
now is celebrated the world over.
Why do we celebrate him on Halloween night?
Hardly anyone knows his story; “To hell with them!” Jack would say.

Incipit
 Autumn had already started to adorn the plains and the sea, the
slopes of the mountains and the banks of the rivers with mists and
silence.
Jack!
Another year was drawing to its close, for those who still
remembered the records of the ancient calendar of those lands, when
months still carried the names of trees or moons and new days began
immediately after sunset.
Jack was a bad lot.
But even with a different calendar people got ready for the festivities
in the same way...
