Cleaning up Dahab
The town of Dahab is situated on Egypt’s Sinai
coast, which stretches from Sharm el Sheikh, a
popular tourist resort in the south, to the Israeli
border in the north, thus linking two continents;
Africa and Asia. 1 _____ But the biggest attraction is
under the water.
Dahab is built around a small bay with coral reefs at
one end including the magnificent but dangerous
Blue Hole. 2 _____ Here, camels wander the streets
and the sun shines almost 365 days a year.
Unfortunately, this scenery is often spoiled by
rubbish. 3 _____ Not everyone is so thoughtless,
though. In fact, there are a growing number who
are trying to clean the area up.
In July 2015, Jimmy Dahab had an idea. 4 _____
Together, they filled thirty large bags before the
high temperatures became too much for them.
More and more of these efforts have since been
made, and it is slowly making a difference.
As well as cleaning up litter, other environmental
campaigns are taking place under the heading
Dahab Go Green. There are plans to grow 600 trees
along the road to reduce the summer temperatures
and clean the air. 5 _____ As a reward, they will
then be able to see their name displayed next to it.
The trees are specially chosen for their large leaves
and flowers, to provide shade, and the fact that
they need only a small amount of water to survive.
The people of Dahab can’t do much about global
warming or rising sea levels, but they can, at least,
make their town a more pleasant place to live and
visit.
