Listing of the Fire Detection Heat Detectors in the FMRC Approval Guide remains unchanged by this report. 3. Continued Approval of the Fire Detectors is based on the epplicable requirements of the follo standards: TITLE AUTHOR.NUMBER DATE, Electrical Equipment for Use in Hezardous M3600 1989) (Classified) Locations Generel Requirements Explosionproof Electrical Equipment General FM615 1989) Requirements ‘These standards are based in large parton standards recognized by the American National Standards Institute 1, This report supplements FMRC Report J.L. IC4A6.4E, dated march 21, 1979. ‘As described by this report, the design and construction ofthe Fire Detectien Heat Detectors provide forthe required degree of protection against electrical shock, fir, and injury required for hazardous (classified) locations. Installation shall bein accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and applicable code requirements. ILDESCRIPTION 1 2 ‘The construction of the Fire Detection Heat Detectors remain unchanged from that originally sescribed in FMRC Report I1. 1C4A6.AF. For hazardous (classified) location installations, the Fire Detection Heat Detectors are intended to be installed in Listed or Approved explosionproof enclosures as deseribed in the mamufacturer’s Installation Instruction Sheet 12.01.B. For additional descriptive information on the Fire Detection Heat Detector, refer to the attached iterate, I MARKING. ‘The Fire Detection Heat Detectors are provided with an aluminum nameplate that is press fitted over the male NPT fitting of the devices. The nameplate markings are reproduced from dravring numbers 06- 133184-000 and 06-133184-100, which are included as attachments to this report. The model numaber, ‘manufacturing date code and temperature setting are permanently stamped onto the male NPT fitting of the Fite Detection Heat Detectors where they are visible ater installation. IV EXAMINATION AND TESTS 1 ‘Two Model 27121-20 Fire Detection Heat Detectors, considered to be representative of production, ‘models, were examined, tested, and compared tothe manufacturer's drawings. All data ison fle at FMRC along with other documents and correspondence applicable to this program. EXPLOSIONPROOF TESTS - The following tests verify the suitability of the Models 27120-12 (22), 27121-20, 28020-3 and 28021-5 Fire Detection Heat Detectors as explosionproof for Class 1, Division 1, Groups A, B, C and D huzardous (classified) locations and Models 27121 0, 28020-0 and 28021-0 Fire Detection Heat Detectors as explosionproof for Class I, Groups B, C and D hazardous (classified) locations. Since the Fire Detection Heat Detectors are of totally welded construction and contain a factory seal in the ¥ inch NPT male threaded nipple, ignition testing with various conduit lengths was not considered necessary as satisfactory testing fon the factory seal (Emerson & Cummings AXT-2534 epoxy) was performed as described in Paragraphs 4.2.2 through 4.2.5. 1. Impact Tests - The Detect-A-Fire Detection Device sample was subjected to an impact from a 1 inch (25mm) spherical tip weight at a2.7 Joule magnitude. The impact was obtained by dropping a4 1b. (1.8 kg) weight fom a height of 6 inches (150 mm) onto various areas of'the device. Results were satisfactory in that no damage occurred to the sample that would affect i explosionproof characteristics. 2. Elammability Test - Flammability test was conducted on the Emerson & (Cummings AXT-2534 epoxy. This material was subjected to five flame applications, on for 1S seconds and off for 15 seconds. After all applications, the ‘material self-extinguished upon removal of the flame and did not burn through. ‘This is satisfactory, 3. Artificial Aging - Three samples of the Emerson & Cummings AXXT-2534 epoxy were exposed to a temperature of 250°F (121°C) for M4 days. Test results Were satisfactory asthe hardness did not change more than the specified limit of 10%, 4, Material Compatibility Tests - Samples ofthe Emerson & Cummings AXT- 253 Epoxy were exposed tothe vapors of acetone, gasoline, hexane, methanol, cetyl acetate and acetic acid in closed vessels containing 4 fluid ounces per quart ‘volume (120 ccllter). These tests were conducted at room temperature. With the exception ofthe epoxy sample that was exposed to hexane, hardness change for the other samples was greater than 10%, The largest hardress change occurred to the sample that was exposed to acetone vapors Which was 40.2%, The Emerson & Cummings AXT-2534 epoxy is satisfactory to be used as a potting ‘compound inthe % inch NPT threaded male nipple portion ofthe Fire Detection, Heat Detectors as determined by the hydrostatic test in Paragraph 4.2.5 5, Hydrostatic Tests -to examine the effects ofthe hardness to change in the Emerson & Cummings AXT-2534 epoxy due to chemical vapor exposure, two ‘Model 27121-20 Fire Detection Heat Detectors withthe inch NPT male ‘nipples filled with the Emerson & Cummings AXT-2534 epoxy (as during normal production) were exposed at room temperature for a period of 14 days to the acetone and acetic acid vapors in closed vessels containing 4 fluid ounces per quart volume (120 ec/liter). Immediately following the removal of the Detect-A-Fire Detection Device samples from the acetone and acetic acid vapor ‘vessels, @ hydrostatic test of 6000 psi (41,369 kPa) was applied for one minute tothe % inch NPT male nipple portion of the Fire Detection Heat Detectors that contain the epoxy. No visible displacement of the epoxy matecial in the male nipple ofthe Fire Detection Heat Detectors was evident asa result ofthe hydrostatic test. The Emerson & Cummings AXT-2534 epoxy is therefore satisfactory to be used as a sealant for use inthis type of design to produce a ‘cemented lamepath joint. 6 Temperature Test The Fire Detection Heet Detectors do not contain heat producing components capable of elevating the external surface temperature above room ambient temperature. Therefore, no temperature code marking is required. Ths is satisfactory. 3. Protective Ground When installed per the NEC requirements and the manufacturer's Installation Instruction Document 12.01.B, dated 12/92, all accessible non-current carrying conductive parts on the Fire Detection Hest Detectors are properly grounded. This is satisfactory 4. ‘The dustignitionproof testing was satisfactory as described in FMRC Approval Report J ICHA6.AE. V REMARKS. Installation shall be in accordance with the manufscturer’s instructions and the National Electric Code, ANSI/NFPA-70. ‘VEFACILITIES AND PROCEDURES AUDIT ‘The Fire Detection Heat Detectors, design and manufacturing are controlled by Kidde-Fenwal, Inc, and are manufactured at the Ashland, MA facility. This facility is subject to follow-up audit inspections. The facility and quality control procedures in place have been found to be satisfactory to manufacture the product identical to that tested and Approved. ‘VI MANUFACTURER'S RESPONSIBILITIES 1, The manufacturer shall advise FMRC of al proposed changes to the documents listed in Sect IX via form 797, Approved Product Revision Report. 2, On 100% of production, the Fire Detection Heat Detectors shall be dielectric tested. A test voltage potential of 1000 Vac or 1414 Va shall be applied between the input leads tied together and the ‘metallic enclosure casing for one minute with no occurrence of insulation breakdown, Alternatively, test voltage potentials 20% higher may be applied for at least one second.
