MEDFEST 2022 DEBATE MOTIONS

1. This house would allow doctors treating terminally ill patients to offer them treatments that
are still in the experimental stage.
2. This house believes that individuals with bad personal lifestyles that influence their health
should pay more for their health insurance.
3. This house prefers a world wherein the medical industry is completely automated.
4. When resources are scarce, this house would deprioritize providing medical care to those
with unhealthy lifestyles (e.g. smokers, heavily obese people).
5. This house regrets the rise of social media influencers in the medical industry.
6. This house would allow doctors to refuse giving treatment based on personal beliefs (ex.
refusing to perform an abortion even in states where it is legalized).
7. In situations where it's not possible to achieve both aims and the decision lies with the
doctor, this house believes that doctors should prioritize prolonging life over the quality of
that.
8. This house believes that developing countries should disregard intellectual property rights
on life saving/preserving medicine.
9. This house believes that ethical standards in scientific research should solely be based
on pragmatic benefits in contrast to moral/non-consequentialist reasons.

Infoslide: In science and medical research, genetic engineering has developed as one of the most crucial
pathways for human development. However, its current development has received backlash on the basis of
virtue ethics that promotes respect for the integrity of species. There are other examples of pragmatically-
proposed and morally-opposed developments within science.

10. This House would require doctors to report all cases of suspected domestic violence.
