To whom it may concern:
I am writing to express my strong interest in the Water Operational Response Analyst position. With
an extensive background in wastewater treatment and a proven track record of success in researching,
designing, experimenting, and optimizing various wastewater treatment processes in different
countries and environments, I am confident that my skills and experience make me an ideal candidate
for this role.
Currently, I am in the final write-up phase of my joint PhD titled "Enhancing mass transfer in
wastewater treatment by designing plasma reactors" from the Universities of Liverpool and York. My
research has been focused on the application of Advanced Oxidation Techniques (AOPs), including
Plasma, for the treatment of recalcitrant pollutants in wastewater. I was awarded a highly competitive
Marie Curie PhD scholarship from the EU in 2020 to conduct this research.
For the past three and a half years, I have been researching the treatment of various types of
recalcitrant pollutants by different AOPs. During my PhD as a chemical engineer, I have studied
numerous research articles and designed lab-scale reactors using 3D design software such as Fusion
360 and SolidWorks and made prototype reactors using 3D printers. Moreover, I designed and
fabricated various electrodes for plasma discharge in different geometrical shapes and materials.
To optimise the treatment process, I have done hands-on experiments and analyzed and characterised
the pollutants using various techniques such as FT-IR, UV-Vis, HPLC, GC-MS, and emission
spectroscopy. Besides, I learned to work with high-voltage electrical devices as part of plasma
ignition.
During my PhD, I collaborated on different projects such as performing a secondment in Nijhuis
company in the Netherlands in the R&D team and my duty was to design a spray reactor carry out
treatment experiments, and advise the production team to improve the system mechanically. Another
collaboration was with Ljubljana University in Slovenia where I used my optimised film reactor to
degrade 20 different pollutants. The results of the collaborations were the publication of two scientific
papers in peer-reviewed journals. As part of the Marie Curie PhD every six months, I presented my
track of work in 5 different countries to the audience from industry and academia.
In 2018, I received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to do a two-year joint masters in Paris, France,
and Genova, Italy. At Paris Saclay University, I learned about sustainable chemistry and renewable
energies where it was focused on learning various physical and analytical chemistry techniques. As
part of the programme, I have done a mobility semester studying material engineering masters at the
University of Genoa, Italy. This mobility semester allowed me to learn about advanced imaging
techniques such as SEM, and FESEM and I also learned about catalysis and solid-state physics.
For my master’s thesis, I worked on an industrial project at Horiba Scientific Company in Paris. My
thesis was using Raman (molecular analysis) and micro XRF (Elemental analysis) to identify and
quantify the micropollutants in the automobile braking system used in cars.
My bachelor’s degree is in chemical engineering from 2014 to 2018 at Sahand University of
Technology, Iran. I had courses about transfer phenomena, Unit operation, process control, and plant
design. I also did an internship at the Environmental Research Centre studying the “Treatment of
Cancer drug waste and textile waste residue by Fenton-like processes”. Publishing research results at
an international conference. Moreover, I worked with various catalysis and electrodes for wastewater
treatment by AOPs. My bachelor’s thesis was also on wastewater treatment by designing bioreactors
and airlift pumps where I designed bioreactors using two chambers for aerobic municipality
wastewater treatment.
Given my multidisciplinary background in engineering and chemistry, specialization in wastewater
treatment research, and experience working in diverse teams in industry and academia across multiple
countries, I firmly believe that I possess the qualifications and expertise necessary to excel in the
Water Operational Response Analyst position.
