Wular Lake
● Wular Lake is located in Bandipora district of Jammu
and Kashmir, about 50 km Northwest from Srinagar
city.
● The lake is situated at an altitude of 1580 m
surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks.
● It is the largest freshwater lake in India.
● Wular Lake plays an important part in the hydrographic
system of Kashmir Valley.
● The lake basin was formed due to a tectonic activity
and is the source of water for River Jhelum.
● Anchar Lake is located in Jammu and Kashmir,
connected with the Dal Lake.
● A number of local water bodies like Bohnar, Erin,
Madamati and Ningal also drain their waters in the lake.

Dal Lake
● Dal is a lake located in Srinagar, j&k surrounded by the Pir
Panjal Mountains.
● The lake is integral to tourism and recreation in Kashmir and
is named the “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir” or “Srinagar’s
Jewel”.
● The world's only floating post office is located on this lake.

● Scenic views of the lake can be witnessed from the shore
line Mughal gardens, such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat
Bagh built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir.
● The lake covers an area of 18 square km (6.9 sq mi) and is
part of a natural wetland which covers 21.1 square km (8.1
sq mi), including its floating gardens.
● In the Lake, the floating gardens, known as “Raad” in
Kashmiri, blossom with lotus flowers during July and August.
● The wetland is divided into four basins; Gagribal, Lokut Dal,
Bod Dal and Nagin (although Nagin is also considered as an
independent lake).

Pangong Tso Lake


● Pangong Tso Lake, the world's highest saltwater lake, is
located in Ladakh at an elevation of almost 4,350 m.
● Extending to almost 160km, one-third of the Pangong
Lake lies in India, and the rest in China.
● The water in the eastern part of the Pangong Tso lake is
fresh, while in the western part is saline.

Suraj Tal Lake


● It is a freshwater lake located in the Lahaul Spiti district of
Himachal Pradesh.
● It is the third highest lake in India being situated at an
altitude of 4950m above sea level.
● Suraj Tal Lake is fed by the Bhaga River, which lies below the
summit of Baralacha Pass.

Loktak Lake
● Loktak Lake is a freshwater lake in Northeast India.
● It is located in Manipur. Floating islands are found in this
lake, which is called 'Phumdi'.
● The world's only floating national park Keibul-Lamjao is
located in this lake.
● Loktak Lake was designated as a Wetland of International
Importance in 1990 under Ramsar Sites.
● Loktak was included in the Montreux Record in 1993 as a
result of ecological problems such as deforestation,
infestation and pollution of silt, hyacinth and para grass in
the catchment area.
● Loktak Diwas is celebrated every year on 15 October.
● Recently, Union Minister Dr RK Ranjan inaugurated the first
three-day floating photo exhibition at Loktak Lake in
Manipur.

Deepor Beel
● It is located in the Southeast of Guwahati, Assam. It is a
freshwater lake.
● ‘Deep’ is an Assamese term for ‘elephants’ and Beel Means
‘Lake’.
● It is the erstwhile Water Channel of River Brahmaputra.
● It is an 'Important Bird Area' and a Ramsar site in 2002.
● Asian elephants, wild cats, and Siberian cranes are found in
Deepor Beel.

Cholamu Lake
● Cholamu Lake is the highest lake in India and the sixth
highest lake in the world. It is located in North Sikkim.
● The Teesta river originates from this lake.

Umiam Lake
● Umiam Lake is a reservoir in the hills north of Shillong in the
state of Meghalaya, India.
● It was created by damming the Umiam River in the early
1960s.
● This lake is also known as Barapani lake.

Rudrasagar Lake
● Rudrasagar Lake, also known as Twijilikma, is a lake located
in Melaghar, Tripura, India.
● Rudrasagar Lake is a natural sedimentation reservoir, which
receives flow from three perennial streams namely,
Noacherra, Durlavnaraya cherra and Kemtali cherra.
● Rudrasagar is a potential Important Bird Area and attracts a
large number of waterfowl in winter.
● The Ramsar Convention has declared Rudrasagar Lake as a
wetland of international importance.

Renuka Lake
● Renuka Lake is a freshwater lake located in the Sirmaur
district of Himachal Pradesh.
● It is the largest lake in Himachal Pradesh.
● There is a lion safari and a zoo here.

Sukhna Lake
● It is a rain-fed lake, located in Chandigarh and its catchment
area falls both in Punjab and Haryana.
● The lake was constructed in 1958 and is spread around 3 sq
km.
● The Punjab and Haryana High Court has declared Sukhna
Lake(Chandigarh) as a living entity.

Anang Tal lake


● The lake is situated in Mehrauli, South Delhi and is claimed
to be Constructed by Anangpal II (Tomar King) in 1,060 AD.
● Anang Tal has a strong Rajasthan connection as Maharaja
Anang Pal is known as Nana (maternal grandfather) of
Prithviraj Chauhan whose fort Rai Pithora is on the list of
(Archeological Survey of India) ASI.
● Recently, The Anang Tal lake in Delhi, has been declared a
monument of national importance through a gazette
notification by the Ministry of Culture.

Sambhar Lake
● It is an inland and brackish water lake in India, located at a
distance of about 50 km from Jaipur, Rajasthan.
● More than 50% of India's salt is supplied from here.

Dhebar Lake
● This lake is located in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
● It is a salt water lake, hence it is famous for salt production.

● It is one of the largest artificial districts of India, which was
built by the ruler of Udaipur in the 17th century.

Lonar lake

● Lonar Lake is a Crater lake formed by Volcanic action.


● This lake is located in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra.
● It is also known as Lonar crater, is a notified National
Geo-heritage Monument
● This lake was formed in the Pleistocene epoch 35,000 years
ago by the fall of a massive meteorite.
● The lake, also called the Lonar crater, is in the Deccan
Plateau. This plateau was formed about 65 million years ago
from lava flows, resulting in a landscape of volcanic basalt
rock.

Pulicat Lake
● Pulicat Lake is the second-largest brackish water lake or
lagoon in India, after Chilika Lake in Odisha.
● It straddles the border between the states of Andhra
Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The lake extends over two districts
in Andhra Pradesh (Nellore and Chittoor) and the Thiruvallur
district in Tamil Nadu.

● A portion of the lake is designated as the Pulicat Lake Bird
Sanctuary, which is particularly significant for its population
of Greater Flamingos.
● Sriharikota Island separates Pulicat Lake from the Bay of
Bengal.
● Pulicat Lake has historical importance as well. It was once a
major port for Dutch, Portuguese, and British traders in the
past centuries.

Kolleru Lake
● Kolleru Lake is situated between the Krishna and Godavari
rivers in Andhra Pradesh.
● This lake is spread over an area of 245 sq km.
● It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in India.
● The lake was declared as a wildlife sanctuary, known as
Atapaka Bird Sanctuary.
● Kolleru Lake has faced ecological challenges due to factors
like pollution, aquaculture, and agricultural runoff.

Tampara Lake
● Tampara Lake is the most prominent freshwater lake
situated in Ganjam district of Odisha, india.
● It is a new Ramsar Sites in india.
● The wetland is an important habitat for vulnerable species
such as Cyprinus carpio, common pochard (Aythya ferina),
and river tern (Sterna aurantia).

Ansupa Lake
● Ansupa Lake is the largest freshwater lake of Odisha
situated in Banki subdivision of Cuttack district.
● The wetland is an oxbow lake formed by River Mahanadi.
● It is a new Ramsar Sites in india.
● The wetland is home to at least 194 species of birds, 61
species of fishes and 26 species of mammals in addition to
244 species of macrophytes.

Chilka Lake
● It is the Asia’s biggest saltwater and largest brackish water
lake in India, off the northern Sarkar coast of Odisha,
located at the Mouth of Daya River.
● It is the Second largest lagoon in the world.
● It is the first Sites of India Designated under Ramsar
convention. In 1981, This lake was also included under
Ramsar list.
● It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1973.
● There are many small islands in this lake like Nalaban
Island, Kalijay Island, Nuvapara, Sankud, Barkul.
● Chilka Lake is home to one of the World’s largest Breeding
Colonies Of Flamingos.
● Species like Irrawaddy Dolphins, Green Sea Turtles and
Fishing Cats are found in this lake.
● This lake is famous for the production of lobster.

Vembanad Lake
● Vembanad Lake is an example of a lagoon lake.
● It is located in Kerala. It is the longest lake in India.

● Water in this lake is supplied by Meenachil, Achankovil,
Pampa and Manimala rivers.
● Wellington Island is located in this lake, where sailing
competitions are held.
● In the year 2002, this lake was included in the list of
wetlands of international importance (Ramsar list).

Ashtamudi Lake
● This lake is located in the Kollam district of Kerala.
● The shape of this lake appears to be octagonal.
● This lake has also been given the status of Ramsar site.
● On June 2, 2013, the country's first seaplane service was
inaugurated in this lake.

Sasthamkotta Lake
● Sasthamkotta Lake, also categorized as a wetland, is the
fresh water lake in Kerala.
● The lake is named after the ancient Sastha temple (a
pilgrimage center) located on its bank.
● The lake has been a designated wetland of international
importance under the Ramsar Convention since November
2002.

Kaliveli Lake
● Kaliveli Lake is located in the state of Tamil Nadu.

● It is the second largest brackish lake in South India after
Pulicat Lake.
● 670 sq. km. The southern part of this lake spread over the
area was declared a reserve land in the year 2001.

Kodaikanal Lake
Kodaikanal Lake, also known as Kodai Lake is a manmade
lake located in the Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, India.
● The lake is star-shaped, centrally located in the town of
Kodaikanal and is surrounded by lush green hills of the
northwestern Palani Hills range, which is the main watershed
for the lake.
● Neel Kurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana), a unique flowering
plant is reported from the catchment area of the Lake.
