Christianity

Ms. Hannah Grace F. Tosio, RPm, LPT

Christianity is the most widely practiced religion
in the world, with more than 2 billion followers.

Like Judaism and Islam, Christianity is a

monotheistic religion.

The Christian faith centers on beliefs regarding

the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ.
Who is Jesus?
• Jesus was born in Nazareth.
• Jesus was later on referred to by
his followers as “Jesus Christ”
(or Jesus the Christ) in
recognition of his being the
Messiah prophesized in the Old
Testament of the Holy Bible
(the sacred book of the
Christians).
• The term Christ is Greek for
the title “The Anointed One,”
which in Hebrew is translated as
“Messiah.”
• According to the text, Jesus was
born to a young Jewish virgin
named Mary in the town of
Bethlehem.
• When he was around 30 years
old, Jesus started his public
ministry for 3 years after being
baptized in the Jordan River by
the prophet known as John the
Baptist.
• For about three years, Jesus
traveled with 12 appointed
disciples (also known as the
12 apostles), teaching large groups
of people and performing what
witnesses described as miracles.

The Kingdom of
God is near. It’s not
the rich and
powerful—but the
weak and poor—
who will inherit this
kingdom.
Apostle’s Creed
This creed is called the
Apostles' Creed not
because it was produced
by the apostles
themselves but because it
contains a brief summary
of their teachings.
The Beatitudes
Matthew 5:3–12
• Now when he saw the crowds, he went up
on a mountainside and sat down. His
disciples came to Him, and He began to
teach them, saying:
• Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven.
• Blessed are those who mourn, for they will
be comforted.
• Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit
the earth.
• Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
after righteousness, for they will be filled.
• Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be
shown mercy.
• Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will
see God.
• Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will
be called the sons of God.
• Blessed are those who are persecuted
because of righteousness, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
• Blessed are you when people insult you,
persecute you and falsely say all kinds of
evil against you because of me.
• Rejoice and be glad, because great is your
reward in heaven, for in the same way they
persecuted the prophets who were before
you.
Ten
Commandments
• God gave the
commandments to
Moses in Mt. Sinai.
• The Ten
Commandments teaches
us how we should aim to
live.
The teachings and missionary work of
Jesus got him into conflict with political
and religious authorities.
Some of his pronouncements and actions
(such as his proclamations that he was
the only begotten Son of God who was
sent to the world to redeem mankind of
their sins and that he was the prophesized
Messiah, and his different views on certain
established Jewish laws such as those
concerning Sabbath and fasting) were
found to be blasphemous by the Jewish
high priests.
Jesus Crucifixion
& Resurrection
The bible says that three days
after Jesus Christ’s death, he
was resurrected from the dead.
His disciples would go on to
tell about Jesus’s story, and
those who followed him would
become to known as
Christians.
Jesus Ascension
He told the 11 disciples about
the great commission—they
were to travel and make
disciples of all nations, baptize
people in the name of the
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
and teach them to obey God’s
commandments. Forty days
after, he ascended into
heaven.
• The Holy Bible includes important scriptures
that outline Jesus’s teachings, the lives and
teachings of major prophets and disciples, and
offer instructions for how Christians should
live.
• Both Christians and Jews follow the Old
Testament of the Bible, but Christians also
embrace the New Testament.
39 – Old Testament
27 – New Testament
= 66 Books
• The Holy Bible is divided into two parts, which
are called the Old Testament and New
Testament.
1. The Old Testament, which was originally
written in Hebrew, is basically the Hebrew
Bible, the sacred text of Judaism. It contains
all the books of the Hebrew Bible with some
modifications in the arrangement.
2. The New Testament, which was originally
written in Greek, contains the life and
teachings of Jesus, the early development of
Christianity, as well as Christianity’s belief
about the end of time.
The New Testament is divided into four main
parts:
(1) the Gospels, which are narrations or
descriptions of the life and teachings of
Jesus;
(2) the Acts of Apostles, which is generally a
historical account of the early growth of
Christianity;
(3) the Epistles, which are letters written mostly
by the apostle Paul to the early Christians;
and
(4) Revelation, which symbolically speaks of the
Christian vision of how in the end of time the
good will eventually prevail over evil, or how
the Kingdom of God will eventually reign in
the world.
Major Beliefs
• This divine Godhead
consists of three parts: the
father (God himself), the
son (Jesus Christ) and the
Holy Spirit.
• Christians contend that
Jesus will return to earth
again in what’s known as
the Second Coming.
• The Cross is a symbol of
Christianity.
• Today the best-known Christian
symbol is the cross which refers
to the method of Jesus'
execution.
• Crosses are sometimes worn
by Christians and can often be
seen in and outside their
churches.
GOD
Christianity is a monotheistic religion.
It acknowledges that there is only one
God whom they worship. By nature,
God is a Spirit, and He is a living and
personal God.
• Omnipresent – this means that God
is present in all places and at the
same time.
• Omniscient – this means that God
knows all things.
• Omnipotent – this means the ability
of God to do everything.
JUSTIFICATION
BY FAITH
• Christians believe in
justification by faith - that
through their belief in Jesus
being the Son of God, and in
his death and resurrection,
they can be at peace with God
and receive forgiveness once
and for all through the death
of Jesus Christ.
LIFE
AFTER
DEATH
• For Christians the death and
resurrection of Jesus proved
that he conquered sin and
death.
• Though all may face death,
but those who put their faith
and hope in Jesus will
subsequently share with
Jesus resurrection and be
given everlasting life in
heaven.

Christian Festivals and
Days of Significance
• Christmas – generally, Christian churches
celebrates the birth of Jesus yearly on the 25th
of December. This celebration is matched with
other traditions such as the singing of carols,
hanging of Christmas decors, and gift giving.
• All Saints’ Day - According to Feast of the Holy
Trinity (2020), ―All Saints’ Day in the
Christian church is a day commemorating all
the saints of the church. It is celebrated on
November 1 in the Western churches and on
the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Eastern
churches.
• Easter – It commemorates the resurrection of
Jesus Christ on the third day after his
crucifixion. It will last on Sunday, the Easter
Day, with joyful celebration of the resurrection
of Jesus Christ.
Other important religious
practices to Christians:
• The Eucharist, Communion,
Lord’s Supper: these are
different words for the same
ritual of commemoration of
Jesus’ last meal with his
disciples.
• Baptism or some other form of
initiation
• Prayer meeting, cell group,
bible study, youth services.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
AMEN.
