Lesson 1 The Computer System

A computer system is the complete set-up of computer together with its hardware
peripherals and software systems. A computer is a the main part of computer system. It is
a fast electronic device or machine that receives data, solve math problems, perform logic
decisions and stores information.

Figure 1. The basic set-up of a computer system.

Components of Computer System

1. Hardware - these are the physical, touchable, electronic and mechanical parts of a
computer system
2. Software - the set of instructions (also called a program) that guides the hardware to
operate effectively
3. Peopleware - refers to people using computer or involved in the data processing
operations such as the system administrator, office workers, and students

Major Hardware Components of Computer System

1. System Unit - The main part of the computer system. It is also called the “chassis”. It
contains the motherboard, central processing unit, and the primary storage of the
computer system. See the image in Figure 1.
2. Computer Display Monitor - It displays information in visual form, using text and
graphics. The portion of the monitor that displays the information is called the screen
or video display terminal.

3
3. Mouse - The most common 'pointing device' used in
computers. Every mouse has two buttons and most
have one or two scroll wheels
4. Keyboard - The first input device developed for the
computers. It is made up of alphanumeric keys that
are used to input data and command to computer. Figure 2. Mouse
5. Multimedia Speaker - It is used to play sound. They
may be built into the system unit or connected with
cables. Speakers allow you to listen to music and
hear sound effects from your computer.
6. Printer - A device that prints data such text or
Figure 3. Keyboard
illustrations from your computer on paper.
7. Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) - An electronic
product used to regulate the 220v AC source of the
computer
8. Uninterruptible Power Supply - An electronic product
with built in battery that is used as back-up power
source of the computer in case of sudden blackout
or loss of electricity. It only lasts for 5 minutes to 30 Figure 4. Computer Speaker
minutes depending on the specifications

Software of Computer System

1. System Software - Any software required to support
the whole operation of the computer system. It is
also called the “Operating Software” or the
“Operating System”. Examples are Windows,
Macintosh and Linux
2. Application Software - software designed to help the Figure 5. Printer
user to perform singular or multiple related tasks.
These are the applications installed in your computer
system. Examples are MS Word, MS Excel, MS
Paint, Adobe Photoshop

Operational Health and Safety Guidelines and Proce-

dures on the use of Computer System
1. Once in a while, stand up and walk around so that Figure 6. Automatic Voltage
you are not sat in the same position all day. Regulator
2. Stand up and put your hands together, elbows out,
then slowly twist to the left and then to the right.
3. Keep your neck straight as much as possible when
working with computers.
4. Keep a straight level of the monitor to your eyes.
5. Avoid drinking and eating while using computers.
The drinks can spill out in your computer system that
may lead to short circuit.
6. Don’t work on table that is very high or very low. The
basic measurement should allow your hand to bend

Lesson 2 Setting Up Computer System

Setting up a simple computer system requires the basic hardware components,

cords and cables. The cords and cables are used to connect one hardware to another for
them to operate as one computer system.

Cords and Cables
1. Video Graphics Array (VGA) Cord - It used to connect
the System Unit to the Monitor so that we can see a
visual representation of how the data are being
processed by the central processing unit or the brain Figure 13. VGA Cord
of the computer system.
2. Universal Serial Bus (USB) Cord - The most
commonly used cord by computer hardware such as
printers, keyboard and mouse. It connect the
computer hardware to the system unit to form the Figure 14. USB Cord
computer system.
3. Power Cord - The cord that connects the monitor and
the system unit to the AVR. The AVR will provide the
220ACV needed by the monitor and the system unit
to operate. Figure 15. Power Cord

Ports
These are the parts in which the cords and cables are connected to. Proper cord
should be inserted to proper ports for the computer hardware to work together properly.
1. Video Graphics Array (VGA) Port - It is usually found at the back of the monitor and
at the back of the system unit.
2. Universal Serial Bus (USB) Cord - It is usually found at the back of the system unit.

Starting the Computer System

Once all the hardware are connected using the cords and cables, double - check of
the connections are firm. Make sure that the Automatic Voltage Regulator is not plugged to
the AC outlet and its switch is in off position. Once checked, you are now ready to start the
computer system to check if your connections are correct. Follow the infographics below
on how to start the computer system.

Shutting Down the Computer System

Shutting down the computer system is not just a simple turning off. There is a
systematic process that you need to do to shut down the computer system properly. One
main reason is the hard disks located inside the system unit. It takes time for the hard disk
to shut down. If you just switch off the computer system, the hard disk will be damaged
because it cannot achieve the set time for it to stop operating. Follow the infographics
below.

The Start Menu will
appear. Click the icon
of a power switch.

3
The Power Menu will
appear. Click the icon
for Shut Down. Once
clicked, the unit is
shutting down. It may
take a while until the
unit is totally off. The
indicator light of the
system unit will turn
off and so with the
keyboard and mouse.

Activity 2
Directions: Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper. On top of your paper,
write the title of the preceding lesson, then the title of this activity.

Re-arrange the steps in chronological order based on the discussed procedures

from Lesson 2. Use number as your answer.
