WELCOME!
Welcome to the Kindness Elves tradition, thank you for
joining us in our simple yet important mission to spread the
magic of kindness with kids! We hope that your children
will love the Kindness Elves just as much as ours do and,
more importantly, that they'll be inspired to continue their
kind acts into their everyday lives for the future too.

We love everything that the Kindness Elves stand for and

find that the children love to see them at various points
throughout the year, especially Christmas, Valentine’s,
school breaks and birthdays!

In December our tradition is to use the Kindness Elves for

12 Days of Christmas Kindness between the 13th-24th,
finishing just before Christmas day itself.

Why do we suggest just using the Kindness Elves for just

12 days? Well, we are a normal family just like yours and
know that the busyness of the season sometimes adds up
to too much extra pressure, and can quickly turn something
that is supposed to be a fun tradition into one extra burden
at an already over-packed time of year!

12 days is much more manageable and keeps enthusiasm

levels high and also means you can get some of the other
Christmas preparations done before you get started!

let’s get started!
This little eBook is designed as a go-to resource for super
simple, achievable ideas for activities and acts of kindness
to do together in the 12 Days before Christmas.

You will see that we have suggested an activity and an act

of kindness for each of the 12 days but you can pick and
choose, mix and match to make it work for you!

We also have an extra list of Acts of Kindness ideas for

you at the end of this book if you would like some extra
inspiration to keep you going all year!

Whatever you end up doing together we would absolutely

LOVE to see your photos on social media using hashtag
#thekindnesselves to build up our Kind Kids community
and spread the love!

Share your own pictures and ideas on social media using

#thekindnesselves . We can’t wait to see what you get up
to together!

With love,

items for acts of kindness
A big part of what we do with the Kindness Elves involves
showing Acts of Kindness to neighbours, friends, family
and members of the community. We try to keep most
suggestions absolutely free or as low cost as possible,
but sometimes there may be a small cost involved. Feel
free to skip these ones if there’s no budget this near to
Christmas!

On a couple of the days we will be suggesting to give

away some little donations like food, toys and books. We
recommend looking first at home to see what you have in
the cupboards or in the kids’ old toy or book boxes!

thinking of acts of kindness to show to others.

the nature lovers

The Nature Lovers love to be outside playing and exploring! They are tree

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’ S FILL A BOX OF FOOD FOR THE FOOD BANK!

What you need:

Empty cardboard box

A variety of boxes/tins of
food or sanitary products

This is probably the first act of kindness you should do

together as food banks like to get their supplies in as
early as possible to then hand out to the people who
need them before Christmas itself.

Let’s fill
a box for INSTRUCTIONS:
the food b
ank! Find an empty cardboard box and simply buy one or
two extra items every time you visit the supermarket
together and place it in until the box is full. Take a look
at the local food bank’s website to see the exact list
of what they are most in need of this year. It is quite
likely not as obvious as you might expect for example
sanitary products and tinned custard often top the list!

DAY 2

ACTIVITY:
LET’S MAKE WRAPPING PAPER AND GIFT TAGS!

Materials Needed:
Plain paper
Cookie cutters in Christmas
themed shapes
Metallic, green or red paint

Ribbon/ twine
Small squares of plain card

busy days leading up to Christmas, and the set up and clear up time is mostly
minimal, always a bonus!

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Lay out your chosen sheets of paper. Natural brown looks the most effective but
white is a good choice too!
2. Put a small amount of each colour paint you wish to use on a paper plate, then dip
one of each shape cookie cutter into them.
3. Use the cutters to print straight onto the large sheets of paper, either in a pattern or

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’S WRAP AND DONATE A GIFT TO THE TOY DRIVE!

What you need:

A specially chosen gift

Wrapping paper

This time of year can just be magical for some kids, but
unfortunately there are thousands of children living in
temporary accommodation or below the poverty line for
whom Christmas is a miserable time of year, and presents
are scarce. Thankfully there are many wonderful initiatives
that run at this time of year where you can donate gifts for

drive! Maybe talk about what kind of budget and gift
you could buy, and then take your child to do the
choosing and wrapping themselves so that they
feel a real part of the process.

This is a wonderful way to teach your child that not

everyone is as fortunate as they are.

DAY 3

ACTIVITY:
LET’S MAKE A HOMEMADE PICTURE FRAME!

Materials Needed:

4 craft sticks
PVA/ white glue
Sequins
Glitter

Everyone loves to receive a special drawing, poem, message or photo at

Christmas time as it is so personal and precious as a keepsake! So how about
making it doubly so by crafting a beautiful picture frame to display it in!

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Start by decorating the four craft sticks with whatever combination of lovely crafting
materials that you choose! We decided to colour some of ours with oil pastels first
before adding collage bits over the top and sticking them down with white glue.

2. When they are dry, use either hot glue or white glue to attach the four corners
together, then add your drawing or photograph behind, securing it to the sides with
tape!

nts! Snap a photo of the kids (maybe holding their Kindness
Elves!) and either send via email or, even better print it out

you love them too to make it extra special.

DAY 4

ACTIVITY:
LET’S MAKE CHRISTMAS CARDS!

Materials Needed:

Paint
Card
Scissors
Foam shapes or stickers in
Christmas designs
Star stickers
Pens
Glitter/ sequins
Glue

Homemade Christmas cards from kids are by far one of the most precious things to receive at

Let’s wrap
this time of year! They can be done so simply and always bring a smile. These are fantastic for an

and donat
afternoon of crafting while watching a Christmas movie or listening to music together! And always
an excuse for plenty of sparkles and messy good fun too (as if we need one!)
e a gift
INSTRUCTIONS:
Here are a few simple ideas for making your Christmas cards:

1. Find some great Christmas foam shapes or stickers in the store and use them to adorn some little folded
pieces of card. Fantastic for fine motor skills too and for keeping kids involved with lots of concentration!
These can also be turned into lovely bookmarks and given as a child-made gift, double bonus!

2. Cut a Christmas tree from green paper/ card and decorate with shiny star stickers to make the
ornaments. These can be stuck onto folded card and cut around to make them stand up. This is a lovely
craft for concentration and fine motor skills, plus it does not require much adult supervision!

3. Simply draw a gorgeous little Christmas scene onto card and then paint white glue around the border
and sprinkle glitter and sequins over the top. Once dry, shake of the excess and you are left with a truly
gorgeous, authentically child-made creation! What is lovely about this idea is that each and every card
will be unique! Alternatively, if all that drawing is too much hard work, you could simply photocopy or
scan the original drawing, then just add glitter and sequins to the printed versions! These are my favourite
type of kids’ art work!

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’S GIVE OUT CHRISTMAS CARDS!

What you need:

A list of Christmas card

recipients

Printed photo of kids

Christmas cards

Stamps and envelopes

in many ways but there is something so very special about

lives. We have got some idea in the activities section of

How about drawing up a list with the kids of who they
would love to give one to, and then write and hand them
out together.

A photo of the kids is a particularly special treasure for

family too and will be sure to make them smile!

DAY 5

ACTIVITY:
LET’S READ CHRISTMAS STORIES!

Materials Needed:

Christmas and Winter

themed story books
Basket
Cosy blankets

We all love the special bonding and memories that are made by reading to kids on our laps and
each one of us can name favourite books that we heard when we were little. There is something
about Christmas and winter stories that is especially wonderful as they seem so comforting and cosy
to read, often sharing times of togetherness or spreading kindness.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Each year we select our favourite Christmas story books and put them into a basket ready to read
throughout the month of December. How about turning off all other distractions (including putting
away our phones!), finding special cosy blankets, grabbing a hot chocolate and snuggling up
together to read a whole heap of books.

It is such a lovely way to connect and make memories, yet costs us nothing but our time! You can
find lots of suggested Christmas book lists on Amazon and Pinterest if you need inspiration.

Prepared exclusively for mwhelansm@gmail.com Transaction: 28713

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’ S DONATE BOOKS TO OTHERS!

What you need:

Outgrown books

The lead up to Christmas is a perfect opportunity

for sorting through old toys, books and clothes and
choosing some to pass on to charity.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Let’s dona
te books Books tend to pile up very quickly in our house and

to others! some are definitely outgrown as they get older.

Maybe find a family who could make use of them or

instead approach a nursery or preschool if they would
like them for their book corner. The doctor’s waiting
room is a brilliant place to donate as they are always
welcome!

Prepared exclusively for mwhelansm@gmail.com Transaction: 28713

DAY 6

ACTIVITY:
LET’S GO OUT IN THE DARK TO SEE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!

Materials Needed:

A form of transport!

Oh one of the great joys of winter time is that when it gets dark everything inside seems so cosy and
warm. As Christmas approaches, the twinkly lights start to appear outside everyone’s homes and in
the shopping streets and it is early enough to go and see them before bedtime!

INSTRUCTIONS:
This is such a fun tradition to start and you can keep it as simple as you like or ramp it up a notch to
the next level too! To keep it simple, tell your kids to find their super cosy clothes and then jump into
the car (or bus) and then drive around the neighbourhood to see all the lights! This is particularly
good for younger children who can’t stay awake late.

To level up, put your kids in their Pyjamas and just as you’re putting them to bed, present them
each with a special ticket saying “Christmas Lights Tour!” Then jump into the car with a little bag of
treats or a hot chocolate in a travel cup, and drive around to see as many lights as possible before
they get too sleepy! This idea is sure to create some amazing memories!

Prepared exclusively for mwhelansm@gmail.com Transaction: 28713

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’ S SMILE AT EVERYONE WE SEE!

What you need:

A bright smile!

This is one of our favourite acts of kindness for the

Kindness Elves to suggest as they usually bring a gift of
new toothbrushes and toothpaste to accompany it! It is
truly the simplest ever thing to do, costing nothing and

Let’s smile requiring little effort.

at everyon INSTRUCTIONS:
e
we see! Simply make eye contact and truly smile at everyone you
see today! We are often reminding out kids to actually
look at adults when they talk to them so this goes well with
this encouragement too.

And maybe extend it to say,“Can you look at a child you

don’t usually play with or who looks lonely, and give them
a big smile too?”

Maybe they can invite them to join their game or sit

next to them at lunchtime too. A smile can turn around
someone else’s day and even start a friendship!

Prepared exclusively for mwhelansm@gmail.com Transaction: 28713

DAY 7

ACTIVITY:
LET’S SING CHRISTMAS SONGS!

Materials Needed:

Printed Christmas song

lyrics

Battery operated tea-lights/

candles

Eager little voices!

Do your memories of Christmas include singing together as a family? Or perhaps listening to a carol
concert or singing your heart out at your nativity show at school? Those memories fill me with lovely
feelings of cosy togetherness and really mark the beginning of Christmas each year.

I know that my own kids are desperate to sing Jingle Bells as early as July, so they are super popular
songs!

INSTRUCTIONS:
Why not choose some favourite songs together and then sing them to each other or in front of
family and friends? You could light some candles (or carry battery operated tea-lights for little ones)
and sing outside for others to hear!

Maybe a local group is hosting a Christmas music sing-a-long or a carols by candle light event. This
could be the year to start a brand new tradition together and make some beautiful memories.

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’ S HAND OUT CANDY C ANES!

What you need:

A bulk supply of candy canes

from the £1/$1 store!

This is a fun act of kindness to make people happy

very easily!

Let’s hand INSTRUCTIONS:

out candy Buy a bulk supply of candy canes at the £1/ $1
canes! store and then take them along in a basket or
bag to a very busy location e.g. the entrance/
exit of a supermarket where people are busy
doing their Christmas shopping.

Then simply offer one to anyone who passes and

say “Merry Christmas!”

You’ll be sure to bring lots of happiness to people!

Prepared exclusively for mwhelansm@gmail.com Transaction: 28713

DAY 8

ACTIVITY:
LET’S MAKE SALT DOUGH CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS!

Materials Needed:

1 cup salt
1 cup plain flour
Up to 1 cup of warm water
(add gradually)
Mixing Bowl
Spoon
Rolling Pin

Combine the salt and our then pour in the water gradually, stirring until it has become dough-like and
not too sticky. There should be no residue left on your ngers when you touch it. Knead it on a oured
surface for a few minutes to make it soft, workable and stretchy, like you would with any dough.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Roll out the dough until it is approximately 1cm thick and then use any cookie cutters to press out a
range of shapes. We have used Christmas trees, stars, hearts, gingerbread men and reindeer over the
years!

Poke a straw near the top of each one so that ribbon can be threaded through later to hang on the
tree.

Lay them on some lining paper on a baking tray and put them into a pre-heated oven at 100 degrees C
(approx 200 F) for 3 hours. The oven is essentially drying and hardening the ornaments slowly, rather than
“cooking” them, so be carefully not to turn it any higher or they may rise or bubble up! If they’re still a
little doughy in the middle after that time, turn them over and put them back for another hour.

Leave them to cool and them decorate them using acrylic paints, PVA/ white glue and glitter. The
acrylics work as a sealant and keep the colours strong and beautiful! When they are dry, thread through
with thin ribbon or twine and hang on the tree! You can write the date in the back to remember when
they were made too, adding a special memory to the occasion.

Prepared exclusively for mwhelansm@gmail.com Transaction: 28713

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’ S VISIT AN ELDERLY FRIEND!

What you need:

Perhaps you can take a

Christmas story with you, a
board game, a piece of cake
or some tea!

Christmas can be a particularly difficult time of year for

elderly folk who are in care homes or alone at home
without many family members visiting them.

Let’s visit INSTRUCTIONS:

an elderly
friend!
Do you have elderly neighbours who might value a visit for
a cup of tea and a piece of cake? If not maybe there is
a local care home that might be hosting an open visiting
session or Christmas carols service.

Children are usually particularly welcome as they are so

friendly and warm and make the residents smile with their
friendliness! Can you find somewhere to visit and share a
conversation this Christmas? It really could make their day
very special indeed.

Prepared exclusively for mwhelansm@gmail.com Transaction: 28713

DAY 9

ACTIVITY:
LET’S MAKE GINGERBREAD COOKIES TOGETHER!

Ingredients:

350g plain flour

1tsp ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground
cinnamon
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
(baking soda in US)
100g butter, cubed
175g light soft brown sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
1 egg

Ahh, gingerbread cookies! One of the best pleasures of Christmas and so evocative
of the smells, cosiness and comfort that comes with the season. Baking with kids can
sometimes be stressful but we believe we have found the simplest ever gingerbread
recipe for you to try together. It makes a lovely, soft type of gingerbread which looks
beautiful when decorated and packaged up as a gift too.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Add the flour, ginger, cinnamon and bicarbonate of soda into a mixing bowl and stir
until combined.
2. Add the butter and mix with a beater or fingertips until it resembles fine
breadcrumbs.
3. Add the sugar, syrup and egg and mix until it becomes a soft dough.
4. Wrap in cling wrap and place it in the fridge to firm up for 30 minutes.
5. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees C (350 F).
6. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut shapes approx 1 cm thick.
7. Lay them on a lined baking tray and cook in the oven for 10-12 minutes then place
them on a cooling rack.
8. When completely cool, use white icing/ frosting to decorate (or eat just as they are, yum!)

Prepared exclusively for mwhelansm@gmail.com Transaction: 28713

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’S GIVE COOKIES TO OUR NEIGHBOURS!

What you need:

Brown paper bag

or plain gift box
Markers/Stickers to decorate
Extra batch of cookies

This is such a simple act of kindness and one that

we o ft e n u se a s a pe r fe ct e x a m pl e o f h ow to g e t
started with the Kindness Elves.

Let’s give
cookies to INSTRUCTIONS:
neighbour
s! Think together of some lovely neighbours, teachers
or friends to take an extra plate of cookies to as a
surprise gift!

Perhaps you could make an extra batch of the

gingerbread recipe from the activities section and
wrap those to give!

You could decorate a paper bag or plain gift box

as an extra way to combine a craft with this act of
kindness too.

DAY 10

ACTIVITY:
LET’S MAKE PAPER CHAINS

Ingredients:

Brightly coloured paper or

decorated papers/ wrapping
paper

Scissors

Glue sticks

Making paper chains is one of my earliest crafting memories from my childhood!

My mother used to buy those colourful, pre-gummed paper strips which we licked
to seal (and they tasted disgusting too!) But how much fun was it to make your own
decorations?!

INSTRUCTIONS:
These are truly the easiest Christmas craft and simply require some brightly coloured or
decorated Christmas paper (wrapping paper will do!)

Cut them into equal length and width strips and set them out with some glue sticks,
then show your child how to fold the first one into loop, sticking it to form a circle.

They then link the next ones through, one at a time, until they make a ling enough
chain to decorate the room!

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’S SAY THANK YOU TO PEOPLE WHO HELP US!

What you need:

A cookie, a bottle of water or

a box of chocolates

A big smile!

This time of year can be particular busy for all

the people who help us. For examples, postal
workers hardly get a break delivering parcels
and Christmas cards at all hours of the day.

Let’s say th

DAY 11

ACTIVITY:
LET’S CUT PAPER SNOWFLAKES

Ingredients:

White A4 sized paper

Scissors

Thread and glitter are

optional extras

Paper snowflakes are another of those Christmas crafts that we all remember from
childhood. And the simple joy that accompanies that first time the paper is unfolded to
reveal the created pattern is just priceless!

If you, like me, cannot always remember the exact way that you need to fold the paper to
create a 6 sided snowflake then I have made a handy photo step-by-step to remind you!

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Simply take a rectangular piece of paper and fold in over to make a square. Cut off the
extra strip and remove.
2. Fold the square the other way so that there are now two folds running across the middle.
3. Fold it back over the first one, then fold again so that the top piece goes two-thirds of
the way over the top. Repeat this from the other direction.
4. Then cut around the top to make a curved edge.
5. Now you’re ready to add the pattern by snipping into the cone shape from all sides. Be
as simple or elaborate as you wish!
6. When you’ve finished cutting shapes out, unfold the paper to reveal the beautiful
snowflake pattern. And then make plenty more!
7. You could now either paint over glitter glue or glitter and use some fine thread to sew
through and hang it up. Or simply stick them on windows instead! These looks just
gorgeous on display.

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’S S DONATE WARM CLOTHES AND BLANKETS TO CHARITY!

What you need:

Warm blankets/clothing for

donations

Items for a homeless kit

- water, socks, health care
products

This is a hard time of year for homeless people in

many places in the world as temperatures plummet
below freezing at night time.

Let’s dona
te warm INSTRUCTIONS:
clothes to
charity! We cannot solve the problem of homelessness but
we can donate some of our warm cosy clothing
and blankets to homeless shelters and charity
shops. A sleeping bag would be a good option too.

If you want to do even more, then try putting

together a homeless kit in a zip-loc bag, containing
some essentials such as health care products,
snacks, water, socks and a phone card with a
phone number for a local shelter. This could be
handed out when you meet someone on the street
this winter.

DAY 12

ACTIVITY:
LET’S DRINK HOT CHOCOLATE AND MARSHMALLOWS!

Ingredients:

Hot chocolate

Marshmallows

Squirt cream

Sprinkles

Special mugs

Ah hot chocolate and marshmallows! One of the special winter treats we all love so
much. Add marshmallows, sprinkles and even squirt whipped cream for a truly indulgent
treat!

I often include a new Christmas themed kiddie mug for each child in either our Advent
or Christmas Eve boxes, ready to use for the whole period. There are so many available
this time of year and they’re usually very affordable too. This just makes it an extra
special event for sure!

INSTRUCTIONS:
This activity is as simple as it seems yet one that should be on everyone’s bucket list for
Christmas time! You could make the drinks together, and enjoy them with a favourite
Christmas movie or while listening to stories together. You will be sure to make lovely
memories as you do.

ACT OF KINDNESS:
LET’S GIVE A BIG HUG AND TELL SOMEONE WHY YOU LOVE THEM!

What you need:

Open arms for a big hug!

Well, this is probably the best kindness of all and

one that we all need daily, kids and adults alike!
Children do not always realise that their parents
are equally keen for hugs and to be told how

list reasons they love them all too!

WRAP-UP
So the 12 Days of Christmas Kindness are over and lots of fun memories
and acts of kindness have been shared together! What do we do with
our Kindness Elves now?

We suggest writing a goodbye letter saying that they will be traveling

home to the clouds until their next visit. You can fill your Little Book of
Big Kindnesses with the sweet postcards that the Kindness Elves have
left out each day to create memories of their visit. Then it’s time to
plan out when you’d next like them to come and stay over the year
ahead!

We suggest that they come in Kindness Week or for Valentine’s Day,

both in February. Spring or Easter is a lovely time to come and suggest
outdoor acts of kindness such as planting flowers and tidying up
gardens. In Summer we have a wonderful Camp Kindness Summer
Camp Activity Guide / eBook which is full of 6 week’s worth of activities
and acts of kindness to do together with friends and family.

Other special occasions include birthday weeks when the pink Wish
Maker Kindness Elves love to come and make the celebration extra
magical for the birthday girl or boy! Kindness Elves are fantastic to
bring out for a couple of days at a time when there’s a bad patch of
sibling squabbling or everyone is in need of some encouragement in
another way! The positive effect of their little letters always inspires
kids to show more love and kindness to themselves and others too!

If you're a teacher who would like to continue this tradition with your
class at school then you’ll love our Kind Classroom eBook packed with
activities, lesson ideas and more resources.

You can find plenty more inspiration over on the blog section of our
website here.
