Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative,
connotative, and technical meanings; analyze how an author uses and refines the meaning of a
key term or terms over the course of a text (e.g., how Madison defines faction in Federalist No.
10).
Objective: Students will be able to identify new vocabulary words and strategies to prepare for
the PSAT

Slides: https://www.canva.com/design/DAF_8ljgpcI/nwNsOb0Mn4nEELf5DDssXA/edit
● Explain to students why vocabulary words are important for the PSAT
○ Slide 3
● Have the students brainstorm a list of TikTok/slang words and their definitions
○ Put most common words in Slide 4
○ Prompt them to think about HOW they figured out what those words mean, when
we hear someone say it we don’t automatically know what it means
○ Ask the students “How did you figure out what these words mean the first time
you heard them?”
EMC Starts Here
● On Slide 5, talk to students about what different strategies we can use to figure out what
unfamiliar words mean, focusing on context clues
○ Go over definition of context clues - What does that mean? How can we use
them to our advantage?
○ Talk through the examples on the bottom of slide 5 with the students - What do
we know about the rest of the sentence? How can we use that to figure out the
unknown word?
○ The goal is for students to think about their thinking- metacognition
● On slide 6, have students use the modeling that I went through to figure out the
vocabulary words as table groups
○ Talk through answers from groups asking the students “What context clues
helped you get to that answer”
● Use the rest of the questions for students to answer the questions individually as an
informal formative assessment
