Potentiality of River Tamarind (Leucaena leucocephala) leaves extract to increase platelet

count

Requirements

in Research I

Jomel V. Soliman
Introduction
Low platelet count can cause nosebleeds, bleeding of gums, and bleeding of wounds that

last for a prolonged period.

The Researcher think for a widely available product that can increase platelet count such as

River Tamarind. River tamarind has approximately 48.3% of Vitamin B9 or Folate and the

remaining percentage are various types of phytochemical such as Flavonoid, Alkaloid, Terpenoid

(N. Shetta, 2009). Vitamin B9 or folate which greatly helps boost the blood platelet count. Some

other foods rich in B9 are spinach, asparagus, and oranges (L. Olcay, 2013). River tamarind are

commonly known as White Lead tree. It is native to Southern Mexico and Northern Central

America and spread across many tropical and subtropical locations. It has multipurpose uses,

such as generation of firewood, timber, greens, fodder, and green manure, as well as to provide

shade and control soil erosion. It has been used for medicinal purposes because of possessing

multiple pharmacological properties. Studies have shown the presence of various secondary

metabolites such as alkaloid, cardiac glycosides, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, and glycosides

(S. Sallam, 2016).

Carica papaya to increase platelet count is one of the study that can help this research.

The papaya leaves extract was specialized because Papaya leaves is reach in Vitamin B9. Leaves

contain also an alkaloid called carpaine. The testing of the papaya leaves extract takes 10 hours

to know it's effectivity (R.Waduge, 2015).

The Researcher was inspired to make an alternative substance that can increase platelet

count. This Research will be a big help in terms of medicinal purposes, this research can prevent

nosebleed, bleeding of gums and bleeding of wounds that prolonged in a period of time.
Statement of the Problem

1. Is there any potentiality that River tamarind leaf extract increase platelet count?

2. Is there any significant difference in using River tamarind leaf extract compare to

commercial product in terms of:

• Effectiveness

• Amount

• Duration

Ho: There will be no significant difference between the River tamarind leaves extract to

increase platelet count and the commercial ones

Ha: There will be a possibility to use River tamarind leaves extract to increase platelet

count.

Significance of the Study

This Research is all about having a substance that can increase platelet count that is

cheaper that commercialized products. People that are suffering in bleeding of gums and

bleeding of wounds that prolonged in a period of time can be the beneficiary of this research.
Scope and Delimitation

This Study Focuses in making a substance that can increase platelet count to avoid

bleeding of wounds that prolonged in a period of time

The river tamarind leaves will be collected San Jose Concepcion, Tarlac. The Testing was

done in Vet Soucier Veterinary Clinic

laboratory mouse.

Materials and Procedures

First, the research will be collecting 200 grams of River tamarind leaves. Next, the

researcher will do the pounding and extracting procedures to get the River tamarind leaves

extract. After, the extracting and pounding process the researcher will put the River tamarind

leaves extract in a cheese cloth to avoid the residue

Testing of the Product

There will be a two laboratory mouse, the researcher will be injecting the river tamarind

leaf extract to the first mouse. The other mouse will not be injected. After 8 hours, the researcher

will compare the two laboratory mouse. Hemocytometer will be the instrument that will count

platelets.

Date Gathering Procedures

The Veterinarian will be evaluated if the platelet count of mouse increases

Statistical Treatment

T- test method will be used in this research to analyze and interpret the results

Interpretation:

Based on the data in the table, it shows the comparison of the River tamarind leaves

extract and commercial product in increasing platelet count of the six mice. It also shows in the

data that the commercial product is more effective and it increase platelet count more of the mice

than the River tamarind leaves extract

Interpretation:

The computed value is 4539.9 which is more than the tabular value of t, thus, it is

significant. This means that the null hypothesis is rejected and there is a significant difference

between taro leaves extract and the commercial product.

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

Summary

The materials used to make the product was 189g of River tamarind leaves and 4ml of
water. This research undergoes pounding and extracting process to get the extract of River
Tamarind leaves extract.
The River tamarind leaves extract was injected on 3 mice, and 3 mice also for the

commercial product, over all this research used 6 mice. Three trials was done in this research to

determine the following: Effectiveness, Duration, and Amount. The commercial product which

was the controlled variable for this study was used to compare the results of the experimental

variable as an alternative substance to increase platelet count.

The River tamarind leaves extract was tested and proven to have a potentiality to increase

platelet count.

Conclusion

1. The River tamarind leaves extract to increase platelet count varies in many qualities

2. The River tamarind leaves extract was proven effective on increasing platelet count based

on the results

Recommendations

After the study, the researcher recommends the following:

1. Need to have a further study about River tamarind leaves.

2. Look for another method in extracting the River tamarind leaves.
3. Use more relevant materials in doing the extracting process
