plans and predictions.
Rania Island Trading Game
There isn’t any money on Rania Island, so you will need to swap with the other villages to get the things that
you need. There are three villages on the island.
Flader
You live here. Your people are farmers. You have cows, hens, vegetables, and seeds, which you can swap, but
it is difficult to take them a long distance. To survive this year, your people will need tools to work with,
firewood for cooking, and salt for the animals.
Aster
Aster is near Flader, in the forest. The people cut down trees, and make tools, but they don’t have any land to
keep animals or grow food. They have wood and tools, which they can swap. To survive this year, the people
will need food to eat and metal to make the tools.
Megister
Megister is far away in the mountains, a dangerous journey from Flader. They don’t have much land to grow
their own food, but it’s the only place on the island where you can get salt and metal. The people are very
smart, but they are not very friendly and it isn’t easy to exchange things with them.
Plan
What are you going to do? Answer the questions.
• Which villages are you going to visit?
• What are you going to ask for?

2D. Reading
I. Read the text, and do the following tasks.
Being Active - It isn’t only about staying fit!
Most young people know that exercise can have a lot of health benefits. For example, it can help you to lose
weight or strengthen your muscles. However, not everybody knows that exercise can have social benefits, too.
Different kinds of exercise from running to basketball can give you these benefits - but what are they?
A number of studies show that exercise and sports can help young people to
improve their self-esteem - this is how positive you feel about yourself.
Learning and taking part in a sport or activity can help you to feel more in
control of things that you do, which is an important part of self-esteem.
Regular exercise can also help you to feel more relaxed, and this can help you
to go to sleep more quickly at night.
Exercise helps you to fall asleep faster, and it also increases the amount of time
that you stay asleep. Having a good night’s sleep is important - it can make you
feel in a better mood.
Exercise and sports can also help you to learn something important in life - how to make and keep new friends.
When people make friends through sports, the friendship can last a long time. Of course, being in a team is
good for making new friends, but you can ask other people with the same hobby to do the activity together.
So next time you do something active, remember - it’s not just about getting in shape - there are a lot of other
benefits, too, from having a good night’s sleep to making new friends.
Task 1. Choose the best short summary of the text.
The text is about...
a. the health benefits for younger people of doing a team sport
b. the social benefits for teenagers of regular exercise and changes in diet
c. the different social benefits for young people of being active and taking part in sports
Task 2. Read the text again. Tick the benefits that are mentioned in the text.
Exercise can help you to ...
a. improve how you feel about yourself 
b. fall asleep faster and sleep longer 
c. sleep well and wake up earlier 

b. They don’t buy these things now.
c. They travel everywhere by bicycle.
d. Colin drinks a lot of coffee.
e. He says that it’s interesting to try these things.
The ‘No Impact’ Family
Can you imagine life with no TV? What about no toilet paper?
In the Beavan family’s New York apartment, there isn’t a TV, a washing machine, a dishwasher or a fridge and
they’re only using one electric light bulb. In the bathroom, there aren’t any shampoo bottles, rolls of toilet paper
or tubes of toothpaste. 1 _______________ They make them or use alternatives.
Some people think that they’re crazy, but Colin Beavan explains that it’s just an experiment. 2
_______________ The Beavans has been living like this for a year because they want to reduce their impact on
the environment. At the end of the year, they’ll decide what they really need and what they can live without.
They’re trying to create less rubbish and use less electricity and fuel. The family doesn’t travel by car or fly. 3
_______________ They buy second-hand things for the apartment, and they buy food at a market, where they
can avoid plastic bags, packets, and boxes. They carry the food in a basket, not a plastic shopping bag. They
don’t buy any food which comes from more than 400 kilometres away.
The Beavans also avoid takeaway food which wastes a lot of containers. 4 _______________ In the places
where Colin has coffee, they give it to him in his jar instead of a disposable plastic cup. They make their own
yoghurt, so they don’t throw a lot of plastic pots away.
Colin says that the experiment is interesting, but it isn’t always easy. He isn’t trying to change other people’s
lifestyles, but he hopes that people who read his blog or book will think about how much they use and waste.
III. Read the text, and then do the following tasks.

Proud of their dustbin!
The dustbin is full to the top with crisp packets and coloured plastic. In fact, it’s so full that it’s difficult to put
the lid on. But the Strauss family, who owns this dirty, old dustbin full of rubbish, are very proud of it. Why?
Because it contains all the family’s rubbish for a whole year.
Two years ago, Richard and Rachelle Strauss and their daughter Verona read an article about plastic bags and
how they cause pollution and harm sea creatures. They decided to stop using plastic bags completely. Now,
when they buy food, they reuse their own bags each time. They recycle as much as they can - glass bottles,
plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, cans - and they simply don’t buy things if they can’t recycle the packaging.
(They buy their toothpaste in aluminium tubes just because aluminium can be recycled.) And they never throw
food away - they eat their leftovers or use them to make compost.
At the moment, it’s impossible to recycle plastic crisp packets and sweet wrappers - and Verona loves crisps. If
she bought a packet of crisps a day, she’d have to throw away lots of plastic. So she buys the biggest packets
she can find - and each packet lasts for a week.
The family are keeping a record of their lifestyle on their website. They hope that other people will read it and
reduce their waste. If everyone recycles a bit more, it will make a huge difference.

How Green is Your Shopping Bag?
Every year, $200-300 billion is spent by around 30 million teenagers in the US. That’s a lot of money. Almost
everything we buy affects the environment, from the energy that is used to make it, to what happens when it’s
thrown away.
What kind of shopper are you? We interviewed Leo, 15, and analysed his answers.
A Are you a ‘big spender’? What do you buy?
Leo: I think I’m about average. I spend nearly half my money on clothes. For example, yesterday I
bought two cotton sweatshirts, although one was a mistake - it’s bright pink, and I’m not sure I’m
brave enough to wear it. I also download a lot of apps, music and games - I love gaming. I don’t really
save money. I know I should, but it’s hard.
Expert: Try the ‘24 hour rule’. When you see something you like, wait a day. If you still want it, then go back
and get it. But you’ll probably spend less, saving money and helping the planet. Tip two: could you
borrow games from friends?
B How green are your shopping habits?
Leo: Well, I try not to use too many plastic bags. I know that they aren’t recycled very easily, and they can
pollute the environment, can’t they? Also, they look pretty bad. I use my backpack most of the time.
Or I buy stuff online. I order most stuff online.
Expert: To be even more ‘green’, look at labels to see where something was made. Was it transported for
thousands of kilometers on polluting trucks and ships? Look for ‘green’ products, too. Buy notebooks
that are made from recycled paper, for instance.
C How green are your food habits?
Leo: OK, I think. I don’t actually like fast food, so I don’t buy much food in plastic packaging. Mum is
obsessed with gardening, so a lot of the vegetables and herbs we eat are grown in the garden, or in pots
by the windows. And food is hardly ever thrown away. We love eating.
Expert: Excellent! Make sure that all your used packaging is recycled, too - don’t forget to recycle glass bottles
and jars, metal cans, etc. But you’re doing really well. Great job, Leo!
Task 1. Match the facts below to paragraphs A-C. One paragraph matches two facts. Fact file
Spending Habits of a Typical Teenager in the US
1. over 75 percent of teenagers shop online _______
2. 40 percent of a typical budget is spent on fashion _______
3. more than 50 percent of teenagers prefer fast food restaurants for eating out _______
4. around 33-50 percent of all gaming sales are made by teenagers _______
Task 2. Read the text again. Then answer the questions.
1. How much money do American teenagers spend in a year?
__________________________________________________________________________________
2. What does Leo spend his money on?
__________________________________________________________________________________
3. What would Leo wait 24 hours for?
__________________________________________________________________________________
4. Why doesn’t Leo use plastic bags? (Give three reasons.)
__________________________________________________________________________________
5. Why is it a good idea to buy local products?
__________________________________________________________________________________
6. How does one of Leo’s relatives help the environment?
__________________________________________________________________________________
7. What else could Leo do for ‘greener’ food habits?
__________________________________________________________________________________

VI. Read the text, and do the tasks that follow.

A load of rubbish
In the UK, people are finally starting to listen to the message about recycling. British families now recycle
about 22% of their waste. Only five years ago, the figure was about 10%. That’s good news for the environment
- but there’s a lot more to do. Some other European countries, like Germany and Holland, already recycle about
60% of their waste and that’s the goal for the UK too.
Households in England produce 25 million tonnes of waste a year. More than half of this is garden waste,
paper, cardboard, and kitchen waste - which people could recycle. They could also recycle plastic, wood, glass,
and aluminium cans. In fact, if everybody in the UK recycled all of their drinking cans, there would be 14
million fewer rubbish bins of waste each year.
Recycling isn’t the only way to reduce the amount of rubbish we throw away. More than 40% of the waste in
our bins is packaging from shopping. If we changed the way we shop, we could easily reduce the amount of
waste. For example, street markets and small shops often use less packaging than supermarkets. And of course,
if we grew our own fruit and vegetables, there wouldn’t be any packaging at all.
Task 1. Mark the sentences T (true), or F (false).
1. The UK recycles more than Germany and Holland. _________
2. The UK recycles more now than five years ago. _________
3. We throw away a lot of packaging from food. _________

5. How could we reduce the amount of packaging that we throw away?

A For many people, life is about working and having a lot of money and possessions. Without these things,
your life isn’t supposed to be very good. Some people disagree, however. Paul Rice is one young person
who lives an ‘alternative lifestyle’.
B Paul lives in a very expensive city, London, but he doesn’t mind not having money. He stays in a squat - an
abandoned home. It’s not his home and he doesn’t pay rent money. In many countries, this is not allowed,
but in the UK, it’s not illegal. He normally spends less than £1 a day.
C Paul doesn’t use public transport, and he hasn’t got a car. He always rides a bicycle. ‘It’s cold in the winter,
but I prefer it,’ he says.
D Paul doesn’t have a paid job, but he’s not bored. He is allowed to study very cheaply, because he hasn’t got
a job. He also works at a charity shop. He meets some fascinating people there.
E Paul says that local cafes and supermarkets throw away a lot of good food, and he eat this. On a typical
day, he has sandwiches and fresh fruit. Does he miss his favourite foods and drinks? ‘Well, a really good
coffee, maybe!’ he says.

Food for Thought
How often do you look in your fridge? And what's in it? Look at what you eat in a day and multiply that by the
millions of people all over the world. All those people, all that food. Where does it come from? Should we care?
Today, in my fridge, there are a few grapes, a bunch of bananas and some fruit juice - things that are not
expensive and that are good for me. There is also a pizza, and some burgers in the freezer - which are not so
good. I know what this food does to my body, but what does it do to the world around me? It’s time to look at
my carbon footprint and sort out the good from the bad and the really ugly.
Food miles
My first stop is the label. Labels give us lots of information: how long we can keep our food, how many
calories it has, and where it comes from. A few hundred years ago, most of our food came from places we could
walk to, but today, food travels thousands of miles. We refrigerate it, then transport it in planes and ships all
over the world. This creates pollution and causes of global warming
I look at the slices of pizza and immediately feel guilty - not because it’s unhealthy, but because the prawns on
it are from Thailand. I know we produce prawns in the UK, but they’re more expensive. I take out a banana -
it’s from Brazil, but that’s not too bad. It came here by boat, so the carbon footprint of this healthy snack is
small.
Packaging
The next stop is the packaging. In the UK, we don’t recycle all our packaging; we throw away more than 30%
of it. This waste goes to the rubbish dump and not to the recycling centre. Luckily, we don’t need to package
food like bananas, but food like grapes needs protection. I look at the grapes in my fridge - they’re in a plastic
container and they’re from Spain.
Production
So my grapes are from Spain, but at least they grew in natural sunlight. In the UK, people grow grapes in
heated greenhouses, which means British grapes are less energy-efficient. But there is one other thing in my
freezer, and if pizza and grapes are ‘bad’, then this food is ‘really ugly’. It’s the burgers. They have the biggest
carbon footprint because they come from cows. In the USA, cows create the same amount of greenhouse gases
as 20 million cars. As I close the fridge door, I make a checklist for my next trip to the supermarket: 1. Read the
label.
2. Look at the packaging. 3. Don’t buy a lot of meat. Maybe I could grow my own vegetables, too. It’s eco-
friendly. I’d save some money and I wouldn’t feel guilty about eating burgers.
32. What does the writer want to find out about the food in his fridge?
a. if it is good for his health
b. if it is good for the environment
c. if it saves his money
33. What can we learn from food labels?
a. Information about the people who make our food
b. How far the food has travelled
c. Why the price is low or high
34. Why does the writer feel guilty about the pizza?
a. Because it is made in Thailand.
b. Because it has a big carbon footprint.
c. Because it is bad for his health.
35. Why are bananas better than grapes?
a. Because they don’t have any packaging.
b. Because they don’t travel very far.
c. Because they grow in natural sunlight.
36. Why are burgers really ugly?
a. Because they are unhealthy.
b. Because they come from the USA.
c. Because they come from cows.
37. What does the writer want to do?
a. He wants to stop eating meat.
b. He wants to reduce his carbon footprint.

Protecting the environment is a global issue, so as individuals, how can we make a difference? The best place to
start is in our homes. Here’s something 10 ____________ advice.
A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide a person contributes to the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a
type of 11 ____________ which is believed to be damaging our environment by causing global warming. Here
are two easy ways for us to reduce carbon 12 ____________ . Firstly, don’t leave electrical appliances, such as your
TV, 13 ____________ . They are still consuming electricity despite not being switched on. Secondly, don’t 14
____________ your mobile phone unnecessarily. Use it until the battery is almost empty.
We should also be aware of what we put in the rubbish. Most rubbish is sent to 15 ____________ . If the rubbish
isn’t 16 ____________ , it won’t 17 ____________ for years or even centuries. In addition, if rubbish is burned in
your area, don’t throw out plastics. When burned, plastics produce very 18 ____________ chemicals, which
pollute the atmosphere and can cause long-term damage to the environment. Take your plastic rubbish to a
recycling centre.

The three Rs
24
Rubbish, and how we choose to ____________ it, affects the environment and everything around us
including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things. We need a healthy environment for our well-being,
so we can 25 ____________ why effective management of rubbish is important. Everyone needs to learn about
and practise the three Rs - reduce, reuse, and recycle - to make our world safe and environmentally-friendly
place. First, we must buy and use less and we should choose items with minimal packaging. Second, we should
reuse things as much as possible and 26 ____________ items on to others who can use them when they are no
longer of 27 ____________ to us. Finally, we should recycle everything once its usefulness is over so they can
be made into new items. Making new items from recycled ones takes less energy and fewer resources than
making products from brand-new materials. Just about anything that cannot be reused can be recycled into

VI. Read the blog, and do the following tasks.
LESS is MORE
1 Hello again! I’m sitting here surrounded by piles of things, most of which I probably don’t need. So today
I’m asking the question ‘How can we live with less?’ I’ve looked around the internet and found a few useful
and interesting ideas in blogs and articles. Take a look and see what you think.
2 Possess less
I was really interested to read some blogs written by ‘minimalists’. Minimalists are people who live with
very few possessions. I read about one teenager who can fit all of his things into one suitcase (except his
surfboard). He looked in his closet and dresser drawer one day and realized that they were full of stuff that
he didn’t use or need. So he sold some of it and gave away the rest. Now, his life is simpler - his room is
always clean and he spends less money. ‘The less you buy, the less you want,’ he says. Sounds good to me.
3 Zero waste
Lauren Singer decided to live a ‘zero-waste’ lifestyle because she was
shocked that people are so wasteful. Since then, she hasn’t used any
disposable products. She never uses plastic cups, bags, or bottles, for
example. She either reuses containers or buys products without
packaging. She also found that most things are recyclable. So now she
produces very little waste. Incredibly, she can fit all of her trash from
the last two years into one small glass jar. It seems like a nice idea - I’ve
already got my jar!
4 Mark Boyle has been living without money since 2008. Before starting his moneyless life, he bought a few
useful things, like solar panels, so that he could live independently. Then, he
closed his bank account and started to live differently. He now lives in a
trailer in a field. He grows all of his own food and never goes to the store. He
says that when you grow food, you don’t waste it. He’s written about his
experiences, and he gives talks about ‘the free-economy’. He says he’s never
been happier or healthier. It’s good to know that we can be happy without
money. Not so easy, this one, but I’m going to try growing a few vegetables.
Task 1. Answer the questions.
29. How did the author get the idea for this blog and where did he find information?
