ABSTRACT

The growth in popularity of social networking leads to the problematic usage. An

increased number of social network mental disorders , such as Cyber-Relationship Addiction,
Information Overload , have been recently noted. Symptoms of these mental disorders are
usually observed less today, resulting in delayed clinical intervention . In this paper, we argue
that mining online social behavior provides an opportunity to actively identify depression at an
early stage. It is challenging to detect disorders because the mental status cannot be directly
observed from online social activity logs.

Our approach, new and innovative to the practice of mental depression detection, does
not rely on self- revealing of those mental factors via questionnaires in Psychology. Instead, we
propose a machine learning framework that exploits features extracted from social network data
to almost accurately identify potential case

CHAPTER INTRODUCTION

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

History
References to mental illness can be found throughout history. The evolution of
mental illness, however, has not been linear or progressive but rather cyclical.
Whether a behaviour is considered normal or abnormal depends on the context
surrounding the behaviour and thus changes as a function of a particular time and
culture. In the past, uncommon behaviour that deviated from the sociocultural norms
and expectations of a specific culture and period has been used as a way to silence or
control certain individuals or groups. As a result, a less cultural relativist view of
abnormal behaviour has focused instead on whether behaviour poses a threat to
oneself or others or causes so much pain and suffering that it interferes with one’s
work responsibilities or with one’s relationships with family and friends.

In today’s world, many of us rely on social media platforms such as

Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram to find and connect with each
other. Each has its benefits, it’s important to remember that social media can never
be a replacement for real-world human connection. It requires in-person contact
with to trigger the hormones that alleviate stress and make you feel happier,
healthier, more positive. Ironically for a technology that’s designed to bring people
closer spending too much time engaging with social media can actually make you
feel lonely and isolated and increase mental problems such as anxiety and depression

Since it’s a relatively new technology, there’s little research to establish the
long- term consequences, good or bad, of social media use. However, multiple
studies have found a strong link between heavy social media and an increased risk
for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts.

CHAPTER INTRODUCTION

Overview
Social media platforms are designed to snare your attention, keep you online, and
have you repeatedly checking your screen for updates. It’s how the companies
make money. But, much like a gambling compulsion or an addiction to nicotine,
alcohol, or drugs, social media use can create psychological cravings. When you
receive a like, a share, or a favourable reaction to a post, it can trigger the release
of dopamine in the brain, the same “reward” chemical that follows winning on a
slot machine, taking a bite of chocolate, or lighting up a cigarette, for example.
The more you’re rewarded, the more time you want to spend on social media,
even if it becomes detrimental to other aspects of your life.

This project aims to develop a deep learning predictive model to classify

users with depression. Because depression is a recurrent disease, it is interesting
in finding unusual patterns in user-generated content over time. Social network
posts over time were extracted for time series data. The predictive model for the
classification is obtained from deep learning techniques and the result is obtained.

CHAPTER INTRODUCTION

The above graph gives the total income and quantiy of order with time. Here, almost 3 years
of data. And from the above graph we can say that that is huge improvement in the salse from
previous year to next year.

We will further narrow down this analysis to each month of the year and day of the month.
