Studies for people who work remotely

Working Remotely

When COVID-19 hit many companies adapted quickly and allowed their

employees to work from home or remotely. Remote work is a type of flexible working

arrangement that allows an employee to work from remote location outside of corporate

offices. In the age of working from home or wherever you choose, there has been some

confusion between digital nomads and remote workers.

Digital nomads are the latest evolution of remote workers. They generally travel

around from place to place. They can work anywhere with a wireless internet

connection and a device such as a laptop or mobile phone. That’s all they need to get

the job done. But, working anywhere means working in dorm beds, on buses, in coffee

shops and in stations. It usually doesn’t take long before your neck, back arms or hands

start protesting (Nordström, 2021).

Living and working as a digital nomad has its perks but with every adventure you

embark on, you’re going to encounter some challenges (Sara, 2013). According to

Tagliaferri (2022), one of the biggest challenges encountered by the digital nomads are

the poor WI-FI connection, technical issues, time zones and the workstations. Despite

of the challenges, many people have embraced the digital nomad lifestyle. The

popularity of this new method of working exploded after Covid-19. In United States

alone the number of digital nomads increased by over 50% to 11 million in only 2020.

Then in 2021, that number increased again to 15.5 million, according to the MBO

Partners 2021 State of Independence Study.

Another hottest trend now is the workcation or laptop lugging, and this kind of

living was already popular before the pandemic however, the coronavirus took it to a

new level. Laptop lugging is about working anywhere outside the workplace to travel to

more natural settings to unwind and raise their spirits as they work. According to French

(2022), laptop lugging is a sort of “digital nomad lite,” providing many benefits of digital

nomadism without requiring them to surrender their home base completely. Expert’s

states, this idea is helping employees and professionals in improving their productivity

as well as their physical and emotional health.

Laptop lugging are very common these days. Expedia's survey of 14,500 working

individuals in December 2021 revealed that 50% of respondents said they took their

work laptops with them on vacation. 41% of respondents to the survey said they often

participate in Zoom calls on vacation. This may simply suggest that laptops are

extremely important for people because they enable them to travel and work from any

location. It makes sense, then, that laptops are the most important items to take with

when on workcation.
