THE ORANGE FRUIT
There were many orange trees in our school. The orange fruits were ripe. Two boys, Ahmed
and Boafo, climbed two of the orange trees. They plucked the ripe oranges. Many of the boys
opened the oranges with their bare fingers. They immediately ate the oranges. They wipe their
hands in their shirts. Our teacher was Madam Ama Yaaba. She was not happy with what the
boys had done.
The next day, Madam Yaaba brought a bowl with water and soap. She used a sponge to wash
the oranges. She pealed the oranges nicely. She cut the oranges into four pieces each. She
asked the children to wash their hands well. She gave them the oranges to eat. She said germs
were all over the place. Germs made us sick. We should always wash our hands before eating.

Mr. Skiny is a hunter is someone who hunts for animals. His main work is to kill animals in the
forest. He uses swords, guns, and cutlasses to hunt for the animals. He comes from a small
town called kojokrom. The town is surrounded by a thick forest. He is not the only hunter in
the town. There are other hunters but he is the king of all the hunters. He has been a hunter for
a long time. Because of that, he knows a lot about hunting. He is a good shooter, something
that he learnt from his father who was also a great hunter. Every blessed day, Mr. Skiny goes to
the forest. It is only on sacred days like Awukudae, Akwasidae and fofie that he does not go to
the forest, he washes his gun and prepares everything that he uses for his hunting.
He maintains them to last for a very long time and to work very well. Sometimes, he does not
get any animal to kill when he goes to the forest. At times, he comes home empty – handed. He
does not get even a snail. At other times, he is lucky. He kills more than one animal which he
alone cannot carry to the house. When this happens, he comes home and calls some members
of his family to help him. When he comes home, he sells some of the meat to the people. Then,
he instructs his wife to smoke the rest of the meat for use at home. His dog, Jack, a very good
companion of his, helps him during his hunting expedition.
