Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the ROACH 3D-printable kit. I hope you enjoy printing and building your
new model. In this document you will find information and tips about your model, the assembly
instructions, a listing of the parts you will need for any particular build and a tutorial on how to
light the model with LEDs.

The kit offers many options to build each model. There are four core variants:
• Technical – open-backed with a weapon mount
• Turreted – closed-back with a compact turret
• Pickup – open-backed like the Technical, but without a weapon mount
• Cargo – unarmed closed-back variant

Additionally you can:

• Install LEDs in the front and rear lights – you'll need 1.8mm LEDs and either a CR2016 or
CR2032 battery. A tutorial is included at the end of this document.
• Choose the direction the front wheels are turned.
• Have an additional pair of machine guns mounted in the front.
• Choose from three gadgets to mount on the roof or turret – an artillery spotter, a flare
launcher or scanner.
• Build the model with or without optional details, such as a bullbar at the front, an ATGM,
spare wheel and windscreen armour shutters.
• Have a Raygun Raptor gunner operating the gun on a Technical.
• Magnetise the weapons – they have sockets modelled into them for 3x1mm magnets.

Tips
• On FDM printers, all parts can be printed without supports, with two exceptions: the front
wheels (supports needed under the suspension arms) and turret-03 (supports needed
under the trunnions).
• There are pre-supported and hollowed parts provided for resin printers. These come in STL
and Chitubox format. The latter allows you to edit the supports to suit your particular
printer. This requires the Chitubox slicer, which can be downloaded for free here:
https://www.chitubox.com/en/download/chitubox-free
• Some parts come in two versions: optimised for FDM or resin (SLA) printers. These are
identified by the “-fdm” or “-sla” suffixes in the filename. No suffix means that the part is
for both printer types.
• The ATGM and gadgets pieces are snap-fit. They should stay in place without the use of
glue.
Assembly Instructions
These instructions show the steps for the FDM versions of parts. The steps for resin versions are
largely the same, just simpler, as some parts have already been combined together.
The front and back pieces come in two versions: regular and with openings for LEDs. Use the
version with openings if you are installing LEDs and the material you are printing with is opaque.
Otherwise use the regular version. It also has LEDs sockets, but they have lenses modelled over
them.

FDM only:
Pay attention to the orientation of the front
wheels. They are flattened at the base and in
the turn-left and turn-right versions they are
tilted, so there is a difference between the left
and right wheels. You can tell which is which by
the direction of the tire tread.
It's best to install the front and back wheels at
the same time, to ensure that they are level
with each other and the model sits on all four
without wobbling.

Note that the left and right wheels are not the
same. Mount them so that the spring/shock
absorber is at the back. The direction of the
tread should match the front wheels.

Don't use glue on this as it's designed to pivot
up and down.

turret-04

Glue this to the weapons cradle but not the

main body of the turret, to allow the weapon to
pivot.

Optional:

Installing LEDs
You will need the following materials:
• Insulated electronics wire.
• Four 1.8mm LEDs, white and red.
• Resistors to match your LEDs.
• One 3V coin cell battery – either a
CR2016 or CR2032.
Tips: I'm using a single colour wire here, but it's
better if you have two colours, to more easily tell
the difference between positive and negative
wires.
Instead of red LEDs, you can just paint white LEDs
red, which is what I did here.

Your model comes prepared with slots for LEDs in the front and rear lights. This tutorial goes
through the process of wiring them up into a circuit that's powered by a coin cell battery in the
base of the model.

Each LED has a pair of leads leading to it. The

longer one is the positive (+) and the shorter
one negative (-). Trim the (+) leads and solder
the resistors to them.
Tips: LEDs care about polarity so they won't
work when connected the wrong way around.
If your model is printed in a relatively
translucent material, it's worth painting the
parts of the LEDs that will not be exposed and
around the area where they will be mounted
with black paint. This should minimise light
shining through parts that it shouldn't be
shining through.
Glue the white LEDs into the front grille part.
Tip: it's a good idea to test your LEDs regularly
by pressing their wires to a battery, to make
sure everything is working fine. They are fragile
and the handling and heat from the soldering
can damage them.
Solder the (+) leads together with a length of
wire then do the same for the (-).

Here is another view showing the two wires.

We can now move onto the back of the model.

The leads on the LEDs are too short for the rear
lights so you will need to solder additional
lengths of wire to them.
Insert the rear lights into their slots and then
join the grille, front and back to the cab. Lead all
the wires out of the top of the cab.

Prepare the battery holder like so. The (+) wire

is shown here on the left and the (-) on the
right.

Insert the battery holder into the cab. Here you

can see the battery installed as well, with the (+)
side facing down.
Tips: While there is no switch on the model, it's
easy to just use a piece of paper or brim, left
over from printing, wedged under the (+) wire
to break the circuit.
Careful not to let the (+) and (-) wires touch as
this will short the battery. At the very least it
will drain it, but in the worst case it could make
it explode or catch fire.
Solder all the (+) wires together and all the (-)
wires together.

Press all the wires into the cab, making sure the
(+) and (-) wires don't touch.

Whether day or night, this model will be ready

for action!
