PART-I: QUALITATIVE QUESTIONS (20%)

1) What do you understand by the term major loss and minor loss in fluid transport? 2pts
2) Discuss in detail about classification of fluid machines on the basis of work transfer.
Elaborate your answer with an example. 4pts
3) Discuss the difference between positive displacement pump and centrifugal pump. List two
examples for positive displacement pumps. 4pts

PART-II: QUANTITATIVE QUESTIONS (10%)

1. An experiment was conducted to estimate the coefficient of discharge of venturimeter in the

following conditions:
- Diameter at point 1 D1 = 0.02m
- Throat diameter D2 = 0.01m
- Pressure difference between inlet and throat: h = 0.6m
- Actual flow rate Q = 0.3 (where 1L = 10-3m3)
