“ Many tourists who visit such places become fascinated by, and protective of, reef fish, corals,
nesting turtles, migrating cetaceans, whale sharks and so on. They will often actively support
conservation initiatives; but they may also be the unwitting necrotic travelling agents of
change.”
- J. Mair, 2006: 1-

the environment.

III/. NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF TOURISM:
Tourism can cause a wide variety of negative environmental impacts.
-Three aspects:
+ The natural environment and resources: Climate; water and soil pollution; waste/ litter; over-
use of resources
+ Animal life: Habitats; animal behaviours; eco-systems; and the dangers of the souvenir trade.
+ The built environment: Over-development; pollution via building work; aesthetic pollution.
SUMMARY:
Many effects of tourism are negative : may raise pollution, disturb animal life and habitats,…
However, tourism also have positive impacts, by human hand through increasing protection
and conservation and propagandize/encouraging the generation.
(The concept of environmental sustainability has been discussed and linked to a number of new
tourism forms that have this concept at their core. A number of guiding principles of
environmental management were reviewed and a set of management tools discussed.)
Nowadays, both operators and travellers themselves frequently exhibit a higher knowledge of
these effects, and good changes can be seen.
(However, despite the industry's rapid growth, much work remains before it can take pleasure
in being environmentally sustainable.)
