Nowadays, the number of students who want to pursue a career in teaching has greatly
reduced, instead, many graduates are interested in other fields, especially in secondary schools
all around the globe, despite the important role teachers hold in modern society. In this essay, I
will discuss the reasons as to why that is and provide solutions to remedy this essential
problem.
Firstly, it is clear that teachers are almost always underpaid. Their salaries aren’t as high as
those of pilots, doctors or lawyers, although educators work just as hard in their respective
jobs. Most of them have to work. For example, teachers make about 20% less than other
professionals with similar education and experience. In many parts of the country, teachers live
below the family living wage. Up to a quarter of teachers leave the profession every year and
about 20% resort to second jobs. Secondly, another reason why so many are preferring to
choose different career paths is due to the behavior of secondary students. Teenagers are
growing into bigger brats, often showing a terrible attitude to the teachers. Researchers have
proven that 60 per cent of the teachers feel indignant and dejected while teaching secondary
school students. Hence, even if one would want to pursue a career in the field, they would
choose younger or older children.
There are multiple angles we can tackle this dispute from. First of all, raising the minimum wage
of educators can encourage more and more graduates to enter the field. Secondly,
disrespectful behavior often comes down to kids having poor problem-solving skills and a lack
of knowledge about how to be more respectful as they pull away. By disciplining the children,
as well as teaching them more knowledge and skills, secondary pupils can treat their educators
better.
In conclusion, with all things considered, teaching is by no means an easy and simple
profession, by implementing many measures, the government can therefore draw more people
in to become teachers.
