Teacher’s Guide
Topic: Verb to be – Let’s give personal information.
Length: 45 minutes
Objective: To express personal information by means of the proper
use of the verb to be in all its forms so that students can improve
their oral skills.

Warming up (10 minutes)

▪ Ice Breaker Activity:

▪ The teacher will share this link with students to check vocabulary
about countries and nationalities.

https://wordwall.net/es/resource/21393813/countries-and-
nationalities

▪ Ask students questions about these famous people and elicit

answers according to the first exercise.
Penelope Cruz, Ter Stegen (Germany), Donald Trump (U.S.A),
Daniel Radcliffe (Britain), Maluma (Colombia).

For example:
T: Where is Penelope Cruz from?
S: She is from Spain, she is Spanish.

Pre-Lesson (10 minutes)

1. Introduction to the topic:

▪ Look at the extra material section and ask students for the
cultural quiz questions. Try to elicit full responses (Will Smith is an
actor / He is an actor). Let them know how many accurate

answers they made and correct the mistakes by using negative
statements. ‘Will Smith isn’t an engineer, he is an actor’.

▪ Ask the students also to practice more about countries,

nationalities and verb to be with this link.

2. Practice:

▪ Have students pair up and practice short conversation models

(look at the extra material section or create some other different
ones on your own).

▪ Assign pairs or small groups through breakout rooms for them to

practice the model they prefer.

▪ Monitor students’ performance by listening to some of their ideas

and providing immediate feedback.

During the Lesson (20 Minutes)

▪ Speaking Activity:

▪ Ask students to choose one famous person they like the most
(this person must be alive). Ask them to find information about
their names, age, nationality, physical description and job. Once
they get that information, the idea is to role-play as that person.
The other students try to ask questions to find out who the
person is. They can ask questions about the age, nationality, job
and physical description, but not about the name to see if they
can guess. Give the students some time to prepare their
questions or give some previous models for them to apply.

What is your job?

▪ Role play:

▪ Have students come together and ask questions to each other to

see if they guess who the famous person is. Try to ask them to act
like the people they chose.

▪ Feedback:

▪ The teacher monitors students’ performance and clarifies

possible questions.

▪ The teacher asks students about the different questions and

answers and how the verb to be is implicit there.

Post Lesson (5 Minutes)

1. Reflection:

▪ Ask the students if they have questions and summarize the most
important points from the role plays and the lesson itself.
