"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is set in the fictional town of Whoville. Whoville
is a cheerful and colorful place where creatures that are alike humans live in, a
joyful and festive community who love Christmas dearly. The town is known as
being vibrant and cheerful, especially during the Christmas season. Houses are
decorated with colorful decorations, and the streets are filled with games. The
contrasts can be seen in Grinch’s gloomy cave on the outskirts of Whoville,
accentuating his disregard for the holiday cheer that surrounds him. Despite the
Grinch's attempts to steal Christmas and get rid of the Whos' spirits, the warmth
and joy of the holiday manages to be kept in people’s hearts even after Grinch
took away every gifts they had. The setting contributed to the mysterious
atmosphere of the book by mentioning that Grinch lives in a cave that is far away
from the town, which describes that Grinch’s house is in a mysterious place that
no one was ever able to visit. Besides that, the surroundings are described to be
big mountains covered in snow which introduces the watcher of the movie into a
mysterious atmosphere.
In my opinion, I was surprised by the Whos, Cindy Lou and the Grinch. All of the
characters that were mentioned played an important role in the movie/book, but
the Grinch was the one that surprised everyone the most. At the beginning of the
story, the Grinch was presented as a creature that has a small heart and hates
everything about Christmas. Although, throughout the story, Grinch transformed
into a Christmas lover that loves to spend time with the Whos.
The Whos surprised me as well, this happened because they managed to forget
Grinch even after all he did to them and their town. He stole their gifts, he
destroyed their decorations and ruined the Christmas fair. Although, after all of
that, they still managed to forgive him and even decide to invite him to spend the
Christmas holiday with them.
Cindy Lou was the first one of all the Whos to believe in the Grinch, and to feel
that he can actually change to being good. She did a lot of effort to get the Whos
to accept the Grinch, but she also made a lot of effort when she convinced the
Grinch to come to Whosville.
In conclusion, every single one of the main characters surprised me, because they
all changed themselves just to spend Christmas together, which is not something
easy to do.
The actors that participated in making the
movie
Boris Karloff: Karloff provided the voice for both the narrator and the Grinch. His
deep, distinctive voice brought the character of the Grinch to life, surprising his
grumpy manner and final transformation.
June Foray: Foray voiced Cindy Lou Who, the curious and kind-hearted young
Who girl who questions the Grinch's actions and helps him discover the true
meaning of Christmas.
Thurl Ravenscroft: Ravenscroft was the singing voice of the Grinch's famous
theme song, "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." His booming deep-toned voice
added to the character's sinister charm, contributing to making a mysterious
theme.
