FOREWORD
The comic book you hold in your hands is the realization of an ambition that
began nearly a decade ago.
Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration - but only a little bit. It’s true that the
opportunity to create a comic book based on the Horizon IP only presented itself
after the release of the first game in 2017. However, the ambition to create a video
game series with a rich fictional universe that could be extended to other media
was present in the very first pitch for Horizon Zero Dawn, way back in 2010.
THE WORLD OF HORIZON
Our story takes place a thousand years after a
global cataclysm. Earth has been remade into a
lush, thriving ecosystem, but with a new dominant
species: the machines.
These massive, animal-like robots fill the lands,
oceans, and skies, serving as the guardians and
enforcers of the revived natural order.

We’re not just video game developers, you see, but also huge fans of comic
books. The medium of sequential storytelling is extremely versatile, and its ability
to adapt, enrich and expand on existing stories in ways that provide new and
meaningful context is unparalleled. So when Titan Comics offered a chance to
create a comic book based on Horizon Zero Dawn, we grasped it with both hands
and held on for dear life.
From the beginning, we knew we didn’t want the first Horizon Zero Dawn comic
book to be a by-the-numbers adaptation of the video game. Horizon fans are
a curious and creative lot - more on that later - so we felt that it was more
important to explore the world and the characters we’d introduced. We decided to
focus this first story arc on Talanah, one of Aloy’s closest allies in the video game
and a strong character in her own right.
Once we had Talanah as our central character, the choice to get Anne Toole on
board as a writer was an easy one. Anne had worked on the Horizon Zero Dawn
video game as a writer, and specifically on the questline involving Talanah. Not
only that, but Anne had prior experience writing comic books based on video
game franchises, which made her a natural fit for the team.
Finding artist Ann Maulina, on the other hand, involved a bit of serendipity.
She came to our attention thanks to the creative thinking of the Horizon fan
community, who shared samples of her work in a forum thread speculating about,
of all things, potential artists to work on a hypothetical Horizon comic book.
Her vibrant and naturalistic art stood out among the works of the many artists
suggested, and we immediately felt that it matched the look we were aiming for.
New generations of humans formed into pre-
industrial tribes, without knowledge of the doomed
civilization that preceded them, that of the “Old
Ones” – us.
Little did they know that threats from the ancient
world persisted, the greatest of which was HADES,
a mysterious A.I. bent on wiping out all organic life.
Bolstered by an army of misguided zealots and
corrupted machines, it launched a massive assault
on humanity’s largest tribe.
After a desperate battle, HADES was defeated by
Aloy, the greatest machine hunter of her age, and
a coalition of faithful allies at the city of Meridian.
Now Talanah, one of Aloy’s closest confidantes
and the newly appointed Sunhawk of the
Hunters Lodge, seeks a moment of respite
after the epic struggle...

We couldn’t be happier with the fruits of this collaboration. Anne and Ann have
delivered a riveting Horizon story that not only does justice to the character of
Talanah, but also expands on the established canon. It starts where the first video

TRIBES this tribe, though her mysterious origins made

her an outcast from birth.

The Carja are the most powerful of Horizon’s
tribes – Sun-worshippers whose holy capital
of Meridian is perched on a massive desert
mesa. For years, at the behest of their leader,
the infamous Mad Sun-King, they raided
other tribes, capturing civilians for slaves
and human sacrifices.
To the northwest of the Sundom are the
Oseram, known to all as thriving merchants,
ingenious tinkers, daring fighters and expert
delvers. Erend, one of Aloy’s most trusted
companions, commands the Oseram’s elite
Vanguard, making him one of the tribe’s
most prominent citizens.

A new dawn began when the Mad Sun-King
finally fell. A resistance movement, led by his
own son, put an end to his tyrannical reign and
opened up a new era of peace with other tribes.
Among these are the Nora, who dwell in the
eastern mountains. Their society is marked by
a strong matriarchal culture and a superstitious
aversion to the tainted “Metal World” left behind
by the Old Ones. They are a secluded people,
never leaving the confines of their Sacred Lands,
and their laws are harsh, sentencing offenders
to be outcasts, shunned by all. Aloy hails from

far north, the unyielding Banuk brave freezing
mountains and treacherous glaciers. Closer to
the Sundom, the agrarian Utaru defend their
fields with expert archers. Beyond them lie the
fearsome Tenakth, masters of the Forbidden

Besides all these, rumors have been known

ANNE TOOLE has written for television,
games, comics, web series, animation
and more. Recently, she has been the
Lead Writer for the Curse of the Pharohs
DLC for the Assassin’s Creed: Origins game,
as well as serving as a script consultant
on the Titan comic of the same name. She
won a Writers Guild award for Best Video
Game Writing for her work on the original
Horizon Zero Dawn game.
ANN MAULINA is a comic and concept
artist from Indonesia with a degree
in Visual Communication Design. Her
award-winning webcomic Raruurien
earned her international attention.
