(a) The divorce statistics shown in this publication relate to divorces granted in a calendar year. See 'Scope and coverage of divorce
statistics' in Methodology.
(b) Crude divorce rates reflect the number of divorces granted during the calendar year per 1,000 estimated resident population as at
30 June for that year. See Glossary and 'Rates and rounding' in Methodology.
(c) Children are defined here as unmarried children of the marriage who were aged under 18 years at the time of application for
divorce. See Glossary for more information.
(d) Excludes divorces not involving children.
(e) Excludes divorces where country of birth for one or both persons was not stated.
(f) Includes divorces where one person was born in Australia and the other was born elsewhere.
(g) Age-specific divorce rates reflect the number of males or females in a specific age group who were granted a divorce during the
year, per 1,000 estimated resident population of males or females in the same age group, at 30 June for that year. There are a small
number of persons aged under 16 years included in divorces data, who were legally married overseas. These persons are included in
the 16-24 year age group when calculating rates. See 'Rates and rounding' in Methodology.
(h) For 2001, this rate represents a divorce rate for males aged between 18 and 24 years.
(i) For 2001, this rate represents a divorce rate for persons aged 55 years and over.
(j) For 2001, this rate represents a divorce rate for females aged between 16 and 24 years.
(k) Divorces data for 2018 and 2019 may differ to numbers previously published. See 'Considerations when interpreting data' in
Methodology for more information.
(l) Same sex couples could not be identified separately in divorces data for 2018, 2019 and 2020. As a result, for these years where
data are presented by sex, one person of the same-sex couple will be included in data of the opposite sex.
Table 2 Age-specific divorce rates per married population, Census years 1976–2021(a)
(a) This data is only available for Census years. Calculated as number of people granted divorce per 1,000 married population according to Census data for each reference year
respectively. See 'Rates and rounding' in Methodology.
(b) In the Census, people aged 14 years or younger are assumed to be unmarried therefore only married persons aged 15 years to 24 years have been included in the population
for this rate.

(a) Divorces are presented by the state or territory in which the court granting divorce was located, rather than the state or territory of usual residence of the applicants. This should
be considered when interpreting or comparing state and territory data.
(b) Crude divorce rates reflect the number of divorces granted during the calendar year per 1,000 estimated resident population as at 30 June for that year. See Glossary and 'Rates

(f) Due to the large number of divorces granted in the Australian Capital Territory to usual residents of other states and territories, the crude divorce rate and age-specific divorce
rates of the ACT are not representative and are not presented in this publication.
