1. COURSE OVERVIEW

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS.

1.1 PURPOSE

Discusses the biological concept of Infection, Altered Immunity and Genetics, alteration in the Respiratory,
Hematological and Reproductive system. The major communicable diseases seen in Tonga or threatening this
country are explored with the preparations for a possible epidemic. Nursing care management of patients
experiencing pathological changes resulting in medical or surgical problems commonly occurring in Tonga,
including prevention and early identification of deterioration of the patient’s health status are discussed.

1.2 LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of this course students will be able to;

1. Explore the pathophysiological mechanisms of disease in related to Infection and Altered immunity and
Genetics.

2. Apply knowledge of respiratory system alterations to the assessment and management of patients.

3. Relate basic understanding of the alterations in the function of the reproductive system with its
management

4. Examine pathophysiological concepts in relation to nursing assessment and management of patients with
common problems related to the functions of haematological system

5. Integrate knowledge of pathological changes to manage, screen and prevent common communicable
diseases in Tonga.

6. Explore on preparation for a possible epidemic and the management an outbreak of communicable disease
in a population.

SECTION 2: Problems of Oxygenation: Ventilation
 Assessment: Respiratory System
 Upper Respiratory Problems
 Lower Respiratory Problems
 Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases
SECTION 3: Problems of Oxygenation Transport and Reproductive Mechanisms.
 Assessment: Hematologic System
 Hematologic Problems: Etiologic & Morphologic
 Female Reproductive Problems
 Male Reproductive Problems
SECTION 4: Communicable Disease Prevention and Pandemic Outbreak Preparedness and management.

3. TEACHING METHODS

Teaching methodology will include direct lectures, group work, Presentations, flipped classroom, library
research, self-directed learning using guided learning activities, game-based learning platform for instance:
Kahoot! As well as simulations and tutorials.

4. ASSESSMENT

Course Work: 40%

 Oral Presentation – 30%


 Post Test – 10%

Final Exam – 60%
