Plot of the
story
Exposition

In the town of Vladimir, there was

a young merchant named Ivan
Dmitrich Aksionov who will be
travelling to the Nizhny Fair, but
as he bade goodbye to his family,
his wife told him not to start today
as she had a bad dream about him
returning with grey hair from the
Nizhny fair
Rising Action
Aksionov met a merchant whom
he knew and put up at the same
inn for the night. When he
departed from the inn, a troika
drove up and an official alighted,
followed by two soldiers
suspecting Aksionov about the
death of the merchant whom he
knew. He was later on put in jail
for the murder of the merchant he
knew.
Climax
Aksionovʼs wife also suspects him for
the murder and began to weep and
when his wife and children are gone he
gave up all hope, only prayed, and said
to himself that only God can know the
truth and lived as a convict in Siberia
for 26 years. It is there when he met
Makar Semyonich which is the
murderer of the merchant Aksionov
knew. Aksionov then caught Semyonich
digging a hole to escape prison but
Semyonich threatened Aksionov not to
tell the guards or else he will die.
Falling action
The Governor turned to Aksionov
asking who dug the hole. Aksionov was
speechless and for a long time he
couldnʼt utter a word. The Governor
asked Aksionov again but he refused to
answer so the matter had to be left.
Later that night Makar Semyonich
came to Aksionov asking for
forgiveness. Then Makar said it was
him who killed the merchant Aksionov
knew and hid the knife among
Aksionovʼs things.
Resolution
When Aksionov heard him sobbing, he
too began to weep, and said, “God will
forgive you. Maybe I am a hundred
times worse than you” And these words
his heart grew light He had no longer
any desire to leave the prison, and only
wait for his last day to come. In spite of
what Aksionov had said, Makar
confessed his. But when the order for
his release came, Aksionov was already
dead.
Conflict
The primary conflict in Leo Tolstoyʼs short story
“God Sees the Truth, But Waits” revolves around
Aksionov, who is wrongfully convicted of a
murder he did not commit. Despite his
innocence, he is unable to find justice, which
forms the central conflict of the story. The
narrative serves as a parable about forgiveness,
with Aksionovʼs inability to forgive Makar
acting as a secondary conflict. Aksenovʼs moral
crisis and internal struggle with guilt and
innocence further contribute to the complexity
of the story.

Ultimately, the conflict is resolved when

Aksenov realizes that only God has the power to
forgive.
Theme of the
story
Injustice
Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov was wrongly accused
of killing a merchant, he pleaded to the
authorities they looked into his case further
and even wrote multiple petitions for his
release but in the end, they still speculated
that the murder weapon was found in his bag
and that no one could've been able to put it in
their other than him so he was put into jail for
almost 26 years.
Faith
When everyone suspects him of the crime
even his wife, he puts all of his faith in God
because he is the only one who knows the
truth in him and that God knows that he did
not do the crime that he was being accused
of, and that God alone is the only authority to
whom he should appeal to. So he stopped
writing petitions for his release and just gave
all of his faith and devotion to God.
Forgiveness
At first Dmitrich Aksionov longs to get his
revenge against Makar Semyonich for all of
the things that have happened to him, but
when the time to get his revenge by snitching
on Makar Semyonich for his tunnel-digging
schemes to the guards, he chooses not to, and
when Makar Semyonich bent down to ask for
his forgiveness, and when he starts crying he
also began to weep and said: “God will
Forgive you!”.
Acceptance

He accepted the fact that he would never be

able to go and see her wifeʼs grave nor his
aged-up children ever again, he no longer had
a longing to go home, and he had no more
desires to leave the prison, but rather only
hoped for his last hour to come.
