7. A data sheet and a periodic table are attached for your use.
10. Round off your final answers to a minimum of TWO decimal places.
Four possible options are provided as answers to the following questions. Each
question has only ONE correct answer. Choose the best answer and write down
(A–D) next to the question number (1.1–1.10) on your ANSWER SHEET, for
example 1.11 B.
1.1 When an object moves at CONSTANT velocity, it means that the resultant
force acting on the body is ZERO. This phenomenon is best explained by …
A Newton’s First Law.
B Newton’s Second Law.
C Newton’s Third Law.
D Newton’s Universal Gravitational Law. (2)
1.2 A truck is traveling at a constant speed horizontally to the right. The driver
suddenly applies brakes and the truck slows down. The crate on the truck
bed slides to the right before stopping at point X relative to the truck.

X
In what direction was the net force acting on the crate during the moment
when the it was sliding?
A No direction. The net force is zero.
B Horizontal and to the right.
C Horizontal and to the left.
D Straight down (because of gravity). (2)
1.4 Two fairly large asteroids, P and Q, have masses 2M and 3M respectively.
They move towards each.
P Q
2M 3M
1.5 Two asteroids are a distance r apart. The magnitude of the gravitational force
that they exert on each other is F.
Which ONE of the following graphs shows the relationship between F and r2
as the two asteroids approach each other?
(2)
1.8 Which of ONE of the following formulae below is the empirical formula of
1,2-dichloroethane?
A CHCℓ
B CH2Cℓ
C CHCℓ2
D CH2Cℓ2 (2)
Reaction 2 is a/an:
A Substitution
B Elimination
C Addition
D Hydrohalogenation (2)
1.10 Which ONE of the following has the LOWEST vapour pressure?
A Pentane
B Hexane
C Heptane
D Octane (2)

2.1 Draw a labelled free-body diagram showing all the forces acting on the 100kg
block while it is moving along the surface CD. (4)
2.3 Calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction between the 50 kg block and the
rough surface AB. (5)
2.4 After a moment, the 50 kg block passes point B and the constant 600N force
continues to pull the 100 kg block up the inclined surface parallel to the
surface.

Ball B
Ball, A takes 1.65 seconds to fall from the balcony to the bottom of the pool before
bouncing of the surface of the pool with a velocity that is 20% of the magnitude of
its velocity just before it hit the pool surface. The ball is in contact with the pool
surface for 0.2 seconds and then rises to a maximum height of the ground level as
shown below.
3.2.1 magnitude of velocity of ball A just before it hits the bottom of the
swimming pool for the first time. (3)
Ball B hits the bottom of the pool AT THE SAME TIME as ball A hits the bottom of
the pool after its first bounce.
3.3 Calculate the speed, v with which ball B was thrown upwards. (4)
3.4 Sketch displacement-time graphs for the complete motions of ball A and ball
B on the same set of axes. Label your graphs for ball A and ball B clearly.
Show the:
• time at which ball A hits the pool floor for the first time.
• time at which ball B hits the pool floor.
• depth of the pool.
(Take upwards direction as positive and the ground as the zero reference) (5)

The graph below shows how the velocity of a crate X changes with time just before
and just after a head-on collision with another crate Y. Crate X has a mass of
16 kg, while the mass of crate Y is 20 kg. Crate Y was travelling at a constant
velocity of 15 m∙s-1 west before the collision. Take east as positive and consider the
system as isolated.

The table below shows five organic compounds represented by the letters A to E.
Consider the boiling points of compounds A to E given in random order below and
use them, where applicable, to answer the questions that follow.
6.4 How will the vapour pressure of ethanoic acid compare to the vapour
pressure of compound E?
