Ch-13:Nuclei

Lect 05
Today’s Goal

Law of Radioactivity
We have studied:
Q) Define λ (Decay Constant)
Q) At time t=0,number of nuclei of a radioactive substance
are 100.At t=1 s, these numbers become 90.Find number of
nuclei at t=2s

a) 80
b) 81
c) 85
d) 77
Q)Draw graphs for
i) N v/s t
ii)logeN v/s t
Activity of a Radioactive Substance
Units of activity/Radioactivity
i. Bequerel=Bq
1 Bq=1 disintegration/second

ii. 1 Rutherford= 106 disintegration/second

iii. Curie =Ci

1Ci=3.7x1010Bq=3.7x1010disintegration/second
Half Life of Decay: (t½)
Number of nuclei left after ‘n’ half lives
Activity after ‘n’ half lives
Q)The activity of a radioactive material drops to 1/6th of it’s
initial value in 24 hours. Calculate half life

a) 1 hour
b) 6 hour
c) 2 hour
d) 3/2 hour
