Would, used to and simple past
WOULD

Would is an auxiliary, that is, it does not have a complete meaning on its own: it needs
another verb to make sense in a sentence. For example, I would like can be translated
as "me gustaría": like provides the main meaning and would qualifies the meaning.

Most common uses of the verb Would:

• For polite requests and offers in interrogative sentences. Here it could be

translated as "would like", "would like" or "would like". Remember: the English are
very polite, so when in doubt, better to use it. Examples: Would you close the door
behind you, please?, Would you have another piece of chicken?
• To express our wishes: I would love some help with this or I would like to be fit
someday.
• To talk about customs or habits we used to have in the past, with a sense similar
to used to: When I lived in Madrid, I would go to yoga every Tuesday at seven
o'clock.
• To form the future of an action that takes place in the past: Anna told me she would
come to the party.
• To speak of a willingness to do something in the past: I tried to convince him to
give up smoking, but he just wouldn't quit.

Uses and Functions:

• Past Habits: Used to describe actions or situations that occurred regularly in the
past. Ejemplo: "He would always go for a run in the morning."
• Will in the Past: Used to express past desires, decisions, or dispositions. Ejemplo:
"She said she would help us with the project."
• Polite Request or Offer: Used to make a request or offer in a polite manner.
Ejemplo: "Would you like some coffee?"
• Conditional in Hypothetical Sentences: Used in conditional structures to express
hypothetical or unrealized situations. Ejemplo: "If I had more time, I would travel
the world."
USED TO

We use the modal verb "used to" to indicate something that happened or happened in the
past on a regular basis. Also, it is used for something that used to be true but is no longer
true. As with the other modal verbs, "used to" is followed by the base form of the verb (the
infinitive without "to").

Example: I used to go to the beach every summer when I was a little boy. (Solía ir a la
playa cada verano cuando era un niño).

It can also be used as an adjective. In that case, it is accompanied by the verb to be and
means "to be accustomed to".

Examples:

• She’s used to living alone. (Ella está acostumbrada a vivir sola.)

• We weren’t used to traveling a lot. (No estábamos acostumbrados a viajar mucho.)
• I’m not used to this cold weather. (No estoy acostumbrado a este frío.)

Uses and Functions:

1. Use: It is used to describe habits, actions, or situations that were common or

customary in the past, but are no longer common in the present.
2. Function: It indicates a contrast between the past and the present, showing that
something was true in the past but is no longer true. It is used to talk about changes
or transformations in a person's life over time.
SIMPLE PAST

It is a verb tense that expresses situations or actions that took place in the past, and
although they may be in the recent or distant past, their duration is not important; it should
only be understood that they have already ended.

specific action that began and ended in quedó en casa anoche.)
the past. In this case it is equivalent • Kate worked last Saturday. (Kate trabajó

adverbs of time such as "last year",
"yesterday", "last night"...

What is the difference between "would" and "used to"?

Would. Among the meanings and uses of "would" is one that you may not be aware of.
"Would" can be used to talk about the "past." Yes, that's right. "Would" is not only used to
make the conditional, but it can also be used to talk about the past.

When is it used with past meaning?

"Would" is used to speak in the past tense when talking about actions we performed in
the past repetitively. It is equivalent to the "past imperfect" in Spanish.

For example:

When I was a boy I would play football with my friends at school. "would play" es jugaba.
She would come to my house every Wednesday to watch television. Remember: "Would"
is used to talk about actions that occurred in the past repetitively.

How "would" differs from "used to"

1. Would does a similar function to "used to", but there is a big difference.
2. "Would" can ONLY be used with movement verbs, e.g. play, sing, walk, come, go,
etc.
3. "Used to", on the other hand, can be used with all kinds of verbs.
4. Remember that "used to" can be translated as "I used to, you used to do....." And
also by "I used to make, I ate, etc."
