When your mobile phone runs out of battery power, all you have to do to get it working again is to charge it up.
Imagine if you could do the same thing with your car. Researchers at car companies are developing cars that plug into electric
sockets. These vehicles might become the cars of the future.
The cars are called plug-in hybrids and they get most of their power from electricity, just like other electrical devices
like mobile phones and laptops. This technology would significantly reduce the amount of petrol that people use. For countries
that depend on other oil producing countries for their petrol supply this could be a great advantage.
Presently, most cars use petrol. Unfortunately, burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide gas, and when a large
amount of this gas and other greenhouse gases are trapped in the Earth's atmosphere, they cause global warming. Hybrid
vehicles have already been developed and are being driven. These cars get their power from both petrol and electricity; they
are able to travel longer distances with less petrol. Plug-in hybrids will be even more advanced as they are designed to be
powered mainly by electricity and use only a small amount of petrol. It might be some time before the cars will become
available to the public but if they do, it will be a major breakthrough for transport.

Emily first hit the newspaper headlines in 1996 when she graduated in fashion design from Art College. At her final show, her
clothes were modeled by her friends, Catherine Smith and Lydia Harris, both well-known models. Unsurprisingly, the student show
became front-page news around the world.
In March 1998, Emily went to work for the fashion house Chloe. People said the famous fashion house had given her the
job because of her surname and her famous parents but Emily soon showed how excellent she was. She designed clothes
which she would like to wear herself, although she was not a model, and many famous models and actors chose to wear them.
In 2001, Emily started her own fashion house and has opened stores around the world and won many prizes since

More than 80% of American high school students do part-time jobs in the evening on weekends or in summers. These
part-time jobs bring teenagers great advantages.
One of the benefits of the work is the students can learn the skills that will be useful for the rest of their lives. When the
students work, they have to manage both the job and schoolwork. To be able to do so, they must be very organized and able to
keep a sensible schedule. They also learn to cope with the job stress apart from the stress of the schoolwork. Some of the most
stressful jobs include teaching, nursing, and police work. These skills help prepare teenagers for their later careers. High
school students who work are more likely to succeed as adults than people who enter the job market at a later age with no
work experience.
Teenagers want a lot of expensive things: clothes, mp3 players, smartphones, etc. Not all parents can afford them. And
even if they can, the teens might not really appreciate that money because they did not earn it. When teenagers make money
for themselves, they know its true value and are less likely to spend it foolishly.

In the earliest times children got their education directly from parents and other adults. They learned main skills for
survival. Adults passed down this knowledge through spoken language. Eventually cultures around the world began inventing
writing. As societies developed, they set up schools to teach reading, writing, maths and other subjects. The first schools were
usually just for boys. Most of the students came from rich and powerful families. Often the purpose of their education was
religious training. In many cultures, the religious leaders formed the highest level of society. Some schools had other purposes
as well. Many schools focused on military training. Sometimes youths attended special schools to learn the art of public
speaking. These skills were meant to help them become future leaders. Most girls received their education at home. They
learned cooking, sewing and other useful skills. Over time, education became available to more people, not just the rich and
powerful. The governments of some countries set up public systems of education in the 1800s. More schools opened to girls.
During the 1900s, marks or grades became a new measure of learning. Testing became a regular part of formal education. As
education became more important to people, teachers' colleges opened. The requirements for becoming a teacher became

Some doctors think that you should drink a glass of water each morning. You should drink this water first thing,
before doing anything else. The temperature of the water should be similar to body temperature; neither too hot nor too cold. If
you drink a glass of water which is too cold, it can cause an imbalance to the body and slow down the digestive process.
Besides, drinking too hot water can bring about some serious side effects such as extensive damage to the tissue and other
organs.
Why should you drink this water? Water helps your body in many ways. It helps clean out your kidneys. It prepares
your stomach for digestion. Water can also help your intestines work better. After drinking water, the intestines can more
easily take out nutrients from our food. Water also helps us go to the bathroom more easily.
Scientists suggest that people take in 1,600 milliliters of water each day. But don’t drink all of that water in one sitting.
If you do, your kidneys will have to work much harder to eliminate it. It’s better to drink some in the morning and some in the
afternoon. Some people think it’s better to drink between meals and not during meals. They think water dilutes the juices
produced in our stomachs. This can interfere with normal digestion. Are you drinking enough water every day? Check the
color of your urine. If it is light yellow, you are probably drinking enough. If your urine is very dark yellow, you probably
need to drink more water. A little more water each day could make you much healthier.

The Sahara Desert is the world’s largest hot desert. The Sahara is in North Africa and is as large as the United States.
Many people think that an area like this has no animals or plant life, but they are incorrect. In fact, the Sahara Desert has many
different ‘ecoregions’. Each ecoregion has different plants and animals living there. The biggest ecoregion is called ‘Sahara
Desert ecoregion’. In this area, the climate is extremely dry and extremely hot. The landscape is sandy and dusty with many
high dunes.
Because the Sahara Desert ecoregion is so hot and dry, there are very few plants and animals. Scientists estimate that
there are only 500 species of plants. This is not very much when thinking of how enormous the region is. These plants include
acacia trees, plants, spiny shrubs, and grasses. The Sahara is also home to 70 species of mammals. Twenty of these are large
mammals. There are about 90 species of birds and around 100 reptiles.
The biggest threat to plants and animals in this environment is drying up. Because of this, plants have ability to
recover their health after their leaves have dried out completely. Animals can lose 30-60% of their body mass and still survive.
Most animals do not get their water from drinking like other ecosystem. Instead, they have adapted to get their water through
metabolic processes. This is why they can survive in a place like Sahara Desert ecosystem.

Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at different times. Music may seem to
influence people differently. That is because people can react differently to the music. We are able to apply a choosing process
to the music we hear. If someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive effect will probably not make him feel good. A
happy song might appear to make an angry person angrier, yet it is not the music itself that is creating the anger; rather it is the
positive effect of the music. The angry person does not want to accept the song's happy feeling: it points out his already
existing anger, and makes that anger come to the surface. When a piece of music is played and we are listeningto it, our body,
mind, and feelings are being affected. The musicians of ancient cultures such as China, India, Turkey and Greece understood
the effects of music. In fact, Pathagoras, in ancient Greece, introduced a whole science that concerned them. Because the
musicians of these ancient cultures understood these effects, they created music that was positive, uplifting, and beneficial.
Once the effects of music are better understood, the next step is to gain a better understanding of the music around us, and
what effect it is actually having.
