Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States and the first African American President
in the country’s history.
Obama was born in 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. At this time, Hawaii had only been an official US
state for two years. His mother and father met when they were both undergraduate students (大
學本科生) at the University of Hawaii. Obama’s father was Kenyan and was attending the
university on a scholarship (獎學金). They got married in February 1961 but separated later that
year. From that point onwards, Obama had only sporadic (偶爾) contact with his father until he
died in 1982. He has commented ( 解 釋 ) that his limited relationship with his father has had a
considerable ( 相 當 大 的 ) influence on the way he has raised his own daughters: ‘his absence I
think contributed (貢獻) to me really wanting to be a good dad, you know? Because I think not
having him there made me say to myself 'you know what? I want to make sure my girls feel like
they've got somebody they can rely on (依靠)’.
Obama moved to Los Angeles to attend university and after graduating ( 畢 業 ) went on to study
at Harvard Law School. From 1992 to 2004, he taught classes at the illustrious (著名的)
University of Chicago Law School. His decision to branch out (涉足) into politics (政治) came
in 1997 when he was elected State Senator of Illinois and from here his political career (政治生
candidate
涯) skyrocketed (暴漲). In 2008 he became the presidential (候選人) for the
Democratic Party (民主黨) and then went on to win the Presidential Election (總統選舉).
In 2012, Obama had to fight to hold onto his presidential role. His opponent (對手) Mitt Romney
proved popular with the voters and it seemed that Obama was on shaky ground (搖搖欲墜). But
despite this, Obama narrowly (勉強地) beat Romney in the election.
