Description
The Model “SB” Pulling/Running Tool consists essentially of a core, a shear pin, and a cylinder containing three dogs. A
sub attached to the upper end of the cylinder provides a connection to the wireline tools. A cylinder spring acts between
the cylinder and the nut core. A dog spring acts against the dogs to force them against the bottom of the tapered slot in
the cylinder, thereby causing them to remain in, or spring back, to an engaged position. The vertical movement of the
core, with respect to the dogs, makes it possible to release the pulling tool by jarring downwardly.
Operation
Upon contact with the sub-surface equipment, the lower portion of the Cylinder passes over and around the Fish Neck
and the Dogs are forced outwardly, then spring in to their engaged position on the Fish Neck due to the pressure of the
Dog Spring. Upward impacts of the jar are utilized to force the sub-surface control from its seat. This would be the
Equalizing Prong of a Model “GPR” Blanking Plug. During this upward jarring, the shear pin is not damaged because such
impacts do not tend to move the core, with respect to the dogs and cylinder. If, however, the control is fouled, or it is
desired not to pull it, the pulling tool may be released by jarring downwardly. Downward jarring forces the cylinder
down on the valve until the upper end of the valve contacts the Core. Continued downward jarring forces the core
upwardly, with respect to the cylinder, and cuts the Shear Pin. This permits the core to move to its uppermost position
where it is held by pressure of the Spring, acting between the Cylinder and the Nut. The upward movement of the Core
lifts the Dogs against pressure of the Dog Spring and forces them to their released position. The Shear Pin Retainer
prevents the Shear Pin or its pieces from falling out of the tool.
1. Place the SB Pulling Tool in the vise so the jaws grip the cylinder.
2. Remove the Sub.
3. Remove the Shear Pin Retainer.
4. Remove the sheared pieces of the Shear Pin.
5. Push downwardly on the Core Nut, align the shear pin holes in the core and cylinder and replace the old shear
pin with a new one.
6. Replace the shear pin retainer.
7. Replace the Sub.
Disassembly
1. Place the SB Pulling Tool in the vise so the jaws grip the Cylinder.
2. Remove the Sub.
3. Remove the Shear Pin Retainer.
4. Remove the Shear Pin.
5. Now, insert a shear pin or punch in the lower hole of the core to keep it from turning, and remove the Nut, using
a core wrench.
6. Remove the shear pin punch.
7. Remove the Spring.
8. Remove the Core through the lower end of the cylinder.
9. Push inwardly on the Dogs and remove them.
10. Remove the washer.
11. Remove the Dog Spring.
Assembly
12. Stand the cylinder bottom-side-upwardly on a flat surface and replace the Dog Spring and Washer.
13. Replace the Dogs.
14. Replace the Core and it to its uppermost position.
15. Align the lower shear pin hole of the core with that of the cylinder and insert a shear pin or punch.
16. Replace the spring.
17. Replace the Nut.
18. Remove the shear pin of punch.
19. Push downwardly on the Core Nut, align the Upper Shear Pin hole of the core with that of the cylinder and
replace the shear pin.
20. Replace the shear pin retainer.
21. Replace the sub.
