ELPL-Final Copy 2016

The document is a mechanical engineering exam covering elasticity and plasticity theory. It contains 5 questions, the first two covering elasticity with sub-questions on stress and strain tensors, principal stresses, and failure theories. The third question derives strain-displacement relations for a stretched bar. Questions four and five cover plasticity, comparing yield criteria, deriving flow rules, and discussing elastoplastic relations and sources of nonlinearity.

PART 1: ELASTICITY

Question One (22)

At a point in a loaded body, the stress tensor at a point relative to an 𝒙, 𝒚, 𝒛 coordinate systems is
𝟒𝟎 𝟒𝟎 𝟑𝟎
𝝈𝒊𝒋 = [𝟒𝟎 𝟐𝟎 𝟎 ] 𝐌𝐏𝐚
𝟑𝟎 𝟎 𝟐𝟎
The body is made of a material, which has 𝑬 = 𝟕𝟎 𝐆𝐏𝐚, 𝒔𝒚 = 𝟐𝟕𝟓 𝐌𝐏𝐚 and 𝝂 = 𝟎. 𝟑𝟑, determine
(a) The principal stress and the principal coordinate system of the maximum normal stress. (8)
(b) The spherical and deviatoric stress tensors. (3)
(c) Normal and shear stresses on the octahedral plane. (3)
(d) Maximum factor of safety using three different failure theories. (4)
(e) The strain tensor at this point, if the material behaves linearly elastic. (4)

Question Two (10)

The following describes the stress distribution in a body (in MPa):
𝝈𝒙𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝒚, 𝝈𝒚𝒚 = 𝒙𝒚 − 𝒚𝟐 𝒛, 𝝉𝒙𝒚 = 𝟏 − 𝒙𝒚𝟐 , 𝝉𝒚𝒛 = 𝟎, 𝝉𝒙𝒛 = 𝒙𝒛 − 𝟐𝒙𝟐 𝒚, 𝝈𝒛𝒛 = 𝒙𝟐 − 𝒛𝟐
Determine the body force distribution required for equilibrium and the magnitude of its resultant at
the point (_20, 30, 60) mm.

Question Three (18)

(a) Derive the strain-displacement relations for two dimensional analysis. (6)
(b) A three-dimensional elasticity problem of a uniform bar stretched under its own weight gives the
following strain field: (12)
𝐊𝒛 𝟎 𝟎
𝒆𝒊𝒋 = [ 𝟎 𝐊𝒛 𝟎 ]
𝟎 𝟎 𝐀𝒛

where 𝐀 and 𝐊 are constants. Integrate the strain-displacement relations to determine a complete
definition for the displacement components.

PART 2: PLASTICITY

Question Four (30)

(a) List, in details, the differences between the Tersca and von-Mises yield criterion. (5)
(b) Explain why the plastic strains are determined as increments? (10)
(c) Derive Prandtl-Reuss flow rule (plastic strain increment-stress relations). (15)

Question Five (20)

(a) As the plastic deformation is initiated, express the three-dimentional elastoplastic relations of
total strain increments-stress increments in an explicit matrix form. (15)
(b) Based on the obtained results in (a), discuss in details the sources of nonlineariy in the three-
dimentional elastoplastic relations. (5)
