Part (1) Elasticity

Question # 1 (13)

The displacement field in a body is given by

𝒖 = 𝑲(𝒙𝟐 + 𝟏𝟎), 𝒗 = 𝟐𝑲𝒚𝒛 𝒘 = 𝑲(𝒛𝟐 − 𝒙𝒚), 𝑲 is a constant

A. Check the different compatability conditions.

B. If 𝑲 = 𝟓 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟒 , express the strain components in tensor form at a point (𝟐, 𝟐, 𝟏).

Question # 2 (10)
If the stress field within an elastic structural member is expressed as follows:
𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝒚 −𝒙𝒚𝟐 + 𝟏 𝒙𝒛 − 𝟐𝒙𝟐 𝒚
𝝈𝒊𝒋 = [ −𝒙𝒚𝟐 + 𝟏 𝒙𝒚 − 𝒚𝟐 𝒛 𝟎 ]
𝒙𝒛 − 𝟐𝒙𝟐 𝒚 𝟎 𝒙𝟐 − 𝒛𝟐
Determine the body force distribution required for this member to achieve the equilibrium
conditions.

Question # 3 (27)
The stress tensor at a point in a machine element with respect to the Cartesian coordinates
system is given by
𝟓 𝟏 𝟎
𝝈𝒊𝒋 = [𝟏 𝟐 𝟒] 𝐌𝐏𝐚
𝟎 𝟒 𝟑
Determine the following:

A. Values of the principal stresses.

B. If the material has a yield strength of 320 MPa, check the element failure using the four
failure criteria. Comment your reuslts.
C. The strain tensor if the material of the machine element has Young’s modulus of
𝑬 = 𝟐 × 𝟏𝟎𝟓 𝐌𝐏𝐚 and Poisson’s ratio is 𝝂 = 𝟎. 𝟑.

A. What are the differences between the Tersca and von-Mises yield criterion?

B. Show that the plastic deformation is a path dependent.

Question # 5 (30)

A. Derive the plastic strain increment-stress relations (Prandtl-Reuss flow rule).

B. Express the three-dimentional relations of total strain increments-stress increments in

the matrix form.

C. Based on the obtained results in (B), Reduce the matrix form of the three-dimentional
