Modernisation of Romeo and Juliet

Today we are presenting Act 2 scene 3. This scene is when Romeo comes to Friar Lawrence for
advice and asks to get married. The setting is the late 1990’s in a high school located in
Compton, Los Angeles, California. There are a couple of changes to the way the characters
speak and their names. Romeo’s name turns into Tyrone and Friar Lawrence becomes
Dawnelle. Amine will be playing as Romeo or in this version Tyrone and I will be Friar Lawrence
or Dawnelle.

Tyrone:
*Knocks on door* Sup Dawg, how you been?
Dawnelle:
I’ve been doing fine Ty. Thank you for asking.
Tyrone:
So, Dawn, I’ve been wondering and wanted to ask you for some advice.
Dawnelle:
Oh, ye? Okay, what’s been on your mind lately?
Tyrone:
My bad if you working but there’s this Lil thang at school and she is sooooo fly. Like sometimes I
be so zoned out thinking bout her that my friends think I‘m totally bugging.
Dawnelle:
Damnn, okok I see you. Balling on and off the court. Is she into you too or is this a one-sided
thing like the bulls in the finals right now?
Tyrone:
Nah, we both love each other but I need your help with something.
Dawnelle:
What is it?
Tyrone:
Cause she’s kind of the daughter of the Blood’s leader around here and, as you know, me being
the next Crip leader doesn’t help.
Dawnelle:
Damn man, thas a tough situation you in.
Tyrone:
Yea man.
Dawnelle:
Aiight, lemme think real quick.
So, what’s your status with her.
Tyrone:
So, it’s kinda complicated. We dating but we can’t be official because of the situation we in.
That’s what I need your help with.
Dawnelle:
Ok, so I know some people that could get you guys together but there’s just one thing.
Tyrone:
What is it? I’m willing to do anything for this girl.
Dawnelle:
You’re gonna have to marry her. It’s a big leap but that’s your only solution right now.
Tyrone:
Yes, absolutely. Tell me everything I need to do to make this happen.
Dawnelle:
Okay, so tell her everything I’ve told you until now. Tell her the whole getting married situation
and by tomorrow morning Imma have everything set up for you guys but we gotta move quick
cause the block is hot right now. That sound good to you?
Tyrone:
Yesss, you are the man. I can always count on you bro. That’s perfect. Thanks a lot Dawn. I owe
you one. I’ll see you tomorrow then.
Dawnelle:
Yea, fasho. Just be there on time and we good.
