PILE HOIST
HME’s Electric Pile Hoists (EPH) are a solution that is used to suspend equipment such
as lighting and scenery bars. These are cost effective entry level hoists which allow
venues, such as school halls, to eliminate the use of ladders to rig theatrical equipment.

PILE HOIST
The design of the pile hoist removes many of the problems associated with lift cables spooling badly onto the cable drum. As the
cable ‘piles’ into ever-increasing diameters on the drum, the ‘load capacity’ of the hoist becomes dependent on the distance the load
needs to be lifted. The shorter the height of lift, the higher the lifting capacity. See the Load vs Drift Table for more details.
Two configuration options are available: a basic version for the budget conscious with only basic up/down operation, and a
professional version which includes components for advanced functions, including networking and self-monitoring.

Standards
HME hoists are designed, built and tested to meet or exceed Australian safety requirements, in
particular the Australian standard: AS/NZS 1418.1 & .2 2002 Cranes Serial hoists and winches.
Out of the box, the EPH Series Pile Hoist complies with the requirements of the BGVD8+
(European) safety standards, allowing for static loads to be suspended above people without

supplemental hanging means. Australia
Hoists can be upgraded to the equivalent of the BGVC1 standard, which allows the movement
of loads above people (subject to local regulations).

Safety First
Safety is an imperative, and HME have taken a number of design decisions to ensure our installations provide the safest work
environment.
■ 10:1 safety factor: all elements are designed with higher than normal safety tolerances, even though in many cases a 5 to 1
safety factor might be legally acceptable.
■ Dual braking systems: two separate and distinct braking systems are employed in the design of the hoists.
_The primary brake is failsafe to 200% of the motor torque. That means the disc brake within the motor is two times
stronger than the motor itself.
_The secondary brake is provided by the statically irreversible gearbox. This is a specially designed gearbox that
prevents any movement except when the system is being driven by the motor.
■ HME use high service factor gearboxes to ensure safety and reliability in excess of what is recommended.
■ Sil 2; PLd safety category achieved with HME’s KTA control system.
■ HME Hoists have two sets of limit switches to monitor both the upper, lower operating and extreme range of travel. These
are adjusted to suit the specific installation.
■ HME uses open loop vector drives on all hoists to ensure that lifting torque is available at all times.
The hoist is capable of a line density of one hoist every 400mm where hoists are located in a single row,
and one hoist every 200mm or less where hoists are located in multiple rows.
Default maximum drift (lift distance) of 10 or 12m dependent on model: Longer drift distances may be
possible with a custom design, however decreased lifting capacity may apply.
