Notes
Auckland is New Zealand's largest, most culturally diverse and cosmopolitan city. Its European, Pacific and Asian influences make
it a destination unlike any other. But its urban credentials—a flourishing cultural life and abundant commerce—are often
upstaged by its breathtaking geography. Sprawled across an isthmus, the city envelops more than 40 extinct volcanoes, several
of which stand in green, pastoral parks overlooking a broad harbor, gulf islands and a seemingly endless shoreline.

Auckland's residents appreciate the city's two-sided personality: They view nature as one of life's privileges rather than a barrier
to development, and the city's population is dispersed into neighborhoods of manageable size. All in all, Auckland is a gateway to
nature and outdoor adventure, with fine dining and culture there for the asking, too.

Almost completely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in the early 1930s, Napier, New Zealand, 205 mi/335 km northeast of
Wellington on the North Island, is famous for its beautiful art-deco buildings. The art museum sponsors guided tours of the
architecture on Sunday afternoons. The National Aquarium is one of the best in the Southern Hemisphere, housing turtles,
seahorses, sharks and other fish, as well as rare tuatara lizards.

Created by Nayla Gomez at Preferred Travel & Company 14

Be sure to pick up an Art Trail brochure from the tourist information office, which lists more than 40 home studios, workshops and
galleries of local artists. While in the area, go wine tasting at some of the country's best vineyards.

Bird enthusiasts should visit nearby Cape Kidnapper Gannet Reserve: Gannets (related to pelicans) nest there October-April. It's a
long walk down the beach to the colony, although tractors towing trailers often provide rides for visitors. If you choose to walk,
keep an eye on the tide: the cliffs are too high and crumbling to climb.

The other famous attraction in Napier is the world-renowned Cape Kidnappers golf course, which boasts spectacular cliff top
views.

Notes
Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, is located at the southern tip of the North Island. Known as Windy Wellington, it is less-
visited than Auckland—410 mi/660 km to the north—and it's a pity that those who do go seldom stay more than a day.

Wellington's waterfront is a true gem and a great starting point for immersing yourself in its arts and culture. It's easy to pass a
day strolling the harbor's edge, ducking into museums and admiring the sculptures along the way.

Lord of The Rings fans should pay a visit to Weta Workshop and Weta Cave; tours offer behind-the-scenes insight into the making
of Peter Jackson's famous films. Wellington also happens to be a base for various Middle-earth tours, although the scenery on
these may not be on the same scale as their South Island counterparts.

Weather in Wellington is famously finicky, but luckily the city buzzes with outstanding bars, cafes and restaurants. Cuba Street
and Courtenay Place are the main hubs of entertainment.

Picton

8:00 AM 5:00 PM 9hr

Arrival Time Departure Time Duration

Notes
Nestled in the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound about 215 mi/350 km north of Christchurch, Picton, New Zealand, is a quiet town
that serves as the South Island's port for ferries from Wellington on the North Island. (The ferry ride takes three hours.)

Once a dead-end transit village, Picton is now an attractive little town. Along the waterfront, visitors can find some good cafes,
restaurants, a New Zealand art gallery, craft stores and the Picton Museum, with exhibits about the area's whaling history. Across
the footbridge in the marina is the restored ship Edwin Fox, a 19th-century wooden vessel.

The sheltered waters of the Marlborough Sound are renowned for sailing, fishing and kayaking, native bush walks and mussel
farms. It's also a good place to explore marine reserves. Boat trips and coastal walks around the sound are easily arranged in
town. Or you can indulge in an overnight stay at one of the lodges tucked away in a secluded bay. We had fun at the small bay
near Picton watching regattas—including sailboats, powerboats and rowboats. You can also see whale migrations along the outer
coast throughout the year.

From Picton or Blenheim, you can rent a vehicle or take a minibus tour to see the Marlborough wine country. Hikers and
mountain bikers will like the breathtaking views along the Queen Charlotte Track, which stretches from Ship Cove to Anakiwa.

Notes
Christchurch, New Zealand, 300 mi/480 km northeast of Queenstown, is a graceful city where gardens and architecture still
reflect some of the culture and heritage of its European immigrants.
Founded in 1850 as a Church of England colony, it is a picturesque mix of the old, the quasi-old and the somewhat new. Expansive
parks lend Christchurch the nickname "The Garden City."

The Avon River curves through the city and its parks, and you can drift along the river in a punt (a shallow-bottomed boat
propelled by a long pole), enjoy a picnic lunch on its banks or just take a nice walk.

In February 2011, Christchurch was devastated by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake, which caused extensive damage to the city
center and took the lives of 181 people. It was one of the worst disasters in New Zealand's history. Much of the inner city, including
the Christchurch Cathedral, was severely affected. The cathedral itself is being rebuilt, but the Transitional Cathedral serves as the
church's temporary home, located Latimer Square.

The Christchurch Central Business District still shows evidence of earthquake damage, but many visitor facilities are back to 100%
operation.

Dunedin (Port Chalmers)

7:30 AM 4:00 PM 8hr 30min

Arrival Time Departure Time Duration

Notes
Distinctly Scottish in feel with stone buildings and Victorian houses, Dunedin, New Zealand, lies on the southeast coast of the
South Island about 225 mi/360 km southwest of Christchurch. This university city claims New Zealand's only castle—Larnach
Castle, which overlooks Port Chalmers and the harbor. You'll also find many fine museums and galleries.

Other diversions include guided tours through the Speights Brewery, the Cadbury Chocolate factory, the 130-year-old Botanical
Gardens, and the Olveston House (the original home of a wealthy merchant at the turn of the 20th century). Be sure to check out
the railway station: Built in 1908 from basalt, it's one of the most photographed rail terminals in the world.

Nature lovers will enjoy the nearby Otago Peninsula, home to the magnificent southern royal albatross (viewing season is late
November-late August) and shy yellow-eyed penguins (the world's second-rarest penguin species). The Little Blue Penguin is a
common sight on the beaches there, usually at night.

Milford Sound

4:00 PM 7:00 PM 3hr

Arrival Time Departure Time Duration

Notes
In spite of its remote location on the South Island and its wet climate (roughly 200 in/550 cm of rain a year), Milford Sound is one
of New Zealand's premier natural attractions. (In summer, it's visited by 50 or more tour buses a day.) Although it's called a
sound, it's really a glacier-carved fjord, with sheer mountain cliffs rising up on both sides. Waterfalls spill down the rocks—there
can be hundreds after rains. Postcard-perfect Mitre Peak dominates the view if it's not covered in clouds.

When it comes to getting to and from Milford Sound, there are several options. Day trips by bus can be booked from Te Anau
(about seven hours round-trip) or Queenstown (12 hours round-trip). More expensive, but much quicker, are flights in small planes
from Queenstown. You can also take the bus in and fly out. (We've done this, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our
last trip).

Created by Nayla Gomez at Preferred Travel & Company 25

If driving yourself, plan on at least two days for the trip from Queenstown, which is 185 mi/300 km to the east. Of course, you can
also walk to Milford Sound by way of the famous Milford Track, though it will take you two days and three nights to make the full
journey.

Fiordland National Park encompasses the southwest corner of the South Island and is New Zealand's largest national park.
Popular for hiking and hunting, it should only be explored by experienced hikers because of its rugged nature, isolation and
frequent bad weather.

Sydney

8:00 AM
Arrival Time

Notes
Sydney, Australia, is a grand host that welcomes the world to its stage. In fact, the city thrives on the opportunity to show the
world what it is: a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with trendsetting international cuisine, stellar architecture—think of the Sydney
Opera House—and a spectacular harbor setting.
Sydney is the cultural and financial heart of the Australian continent. Nearly one-fifth of the residents of Australia live there, and
Sydneysiders are always on the go—many of them back and forth over the spectacular Sydney Harbour Bridge. They sail, surf,
swim and ferry across the water—or look out over bays or beaches from one of many waterfront cafes.

Your private guide from Australian Luxury Escapes (ph: +61 2 9980 87990) will be located in the terminal, holding a ‘ Kuchar’ sign at
8:00am.

From here, you will proceed straight to Featherdale Wildlife Park. The park boasts Australia's largest collection of native wildlife in a
natural bush environment. You’ll have the exclusive opportunity to get up close and personal with Australian wildlife - hand feed a
Kangaroo, Wallaby, Pademelon or Quokka. Enjoy an amazing one-to-one encounter with a friendly cuddly koala, take a behind the
scenes tour of the reptile house and visit the baby animal nursery.

After the park, you will return toward the historic Rocks precinct. Witness the birthplace of Sydney and explore the convict-built
cottages, pubs and the first church in Australia. Head east to the stunning botanical gardens situated right in the heart of Sydney.
En route, pass through Macquarie Street, named after the fifth Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie. Here you will
enjoy a walking tour of the Harbour’s edge with magnificent views of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House before
rejoining the vehicle.

You then continue through Wooloomooloo, Kings Cross and into Rushcutters Bay. It’s here you enjoy a lunch at the Cruising Yacht
Club of Australia, Australia’s premier yacht club and home to what is considered yachting’s ‘Everest’ – the Rolex Sydney to Hobart
Yacht Race.

After lunch, your tour continues to Darling Point, one of Sydney’s most affluent suburbs and see some of Sydney’s most sought-
after addresses. Pass by Double Bay, Rose Bay, Vaucluse, and Watsons Bay, before traversing along the coastline to Sydney’s most
famous beach, Bondi Beach. Here you will have some time to soak up the atmosphere of this beachside Mecca. Stroll down the
esplanade with the locals and maybe enjoy an ice cream before reboarding the vehicle.

Your way back to Sydney is via vibrant Oxford Street and the suburb of Paddington. Admire this boutique shopping precinct and the
charming Georgian and Victorian architecture of the homes.

Your tour ends at your cruise ship.
