Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the introduction, conceptual framework,

research paradigm, statement of the problem, significance of the study,
scope and delimitation, and definition of terms.

Introduction

In today's world getting information from different sources is very

important. We have lots of questions and curiosity about many things in our
minds. We ask questions and seek for answer. We find the information,
evaluate the source and make a decisions. In every data we gathered
might inform and aware us to improve ourselves to became a better
person.

Information sources is a person, thing, or place from which

information comes, arises or obtained to provide knowledge, (Wikipedia,
2017) such as books and internet that can be in the form of blogs,
magazine, article, encyclopedia, and web pages. The material that you will
use depends on the question you are trying to answer.

The internet, one of a source mostly use, carries an extensive range

of information defined as a global network connecting millions of computers
more than 190 countries are linked into exchange of data, views, and
2

opinions. According to Beal (2017), internet live stats as of August 12, 2016
there was an estimated 3,432,809,100 internet users represents nearly
40% of the worlds' population and continues to increase.

Books is a set of sheet of paper play a significant role in our life. When you
open a book you open a new world. Books are packed with knowledge and
insights. It expose yourself to new things, improve oneself, improve
understanding, improve imagination, and improve your memory.
Knowledge was not just a knowledge, it was the wisdom of all kinds.
(Victoria, 2016)

In 2015, Mehta states that a books consist of long written work. It

may be published from either in physical form or in electronic form. Books
are our friends in real sense. They demand nothing from us. They give is
plenty of joy. We also learn from them. They take us into a different world
of imagination.

Conceptual Framework

This study is based in the wider field of getting information behavior of

grade 11 accountancy, business and management (ABM) students in Rizal
Technological University. More classified in the context of information
seeking behavior defined by Willson (2000) as "purposive seeking
information as a consequence of a need to satisfy same goal. In the field of
finding or seeking information and ideas, a person may interact with the
use of books and internet in getting an information through technological
use. It advocates the general and most prohibited source found on the
book. It also States the use of information found and cited on the internet. It
distinguish the most comfortable information use by the students.
Therefore this study focuses on what is the most reliable source. It also
investigate on what is the advantages of each way of information.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to determine what is more reliable

source of information among books and internet.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the profile of respondents in terms of age and gender ?

2. Which do you prefer to use as source of information? Books or

internet?

3. What are the reasons why you choose book? Internet?

4

4. What are your recommendations for books user and for internet
user?

The input contains the respondents profile and the problem on what is
the most reliable source on getting information in books or internet.

In the process, we put the ways we did, we conducted surveys, we do

statistical treatment and analysis of data and we get the percentage from
the interview.

The output presents the result of the study conducted, what the
awareness on which of the two references, internet or books can be
considered as the best according to the respondent’s responses.
5

Singnificance of the Study

This study is conducted in an attempt to represent what is more

reliable source of information for grade 12 students in NSDPIS. The result
of the study may have valuable contributions to:

Librarian. This may help the librarian to know what to improve if they
need to put computers to the library of add more books. The librarian may
also help the students to find the information they need.

Parents. This study may help parents to know what is more needed by
their children as a source of information.

Students. The students will be knowledgeable enough where to get

information.

Researchers. The researchers will be aware on what is better to use

among books and internet.

Teachers. The teachers will know where to get information to add an

additional idea aside from lesson plan or text books.
6

Scope and Delimitations

This study is concern about what is more reliable source of information

among books and internet for the selected grade 11 Accountancy,
Business, and Management (ABM) students of Rizal Technological
University in the S.Y. 2017-2018

Moreover, it is delimited to the slope of the reasons on which they

prefer to use as a source of information.

Definition of Terms

For better understanding of the study, the researchers define the following
terms as used in this study

Book- set of sheets of paper, parchment or similar materials that are fastened
together to hinge at one side.(Curtis,2011)

Data- represents values attributed to parameters and knowledge signifies

understanding of real things or abstract concept. (Floridi, 2010)

Information- the answer to a question of some kind. It thus related to data and
knowledge. (Floridi,2010)
7

Library- collection of sources of information and similar resources, made

accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing. (Allen, 1984)

Reference- relationship between objects in which one object designates or

acts as a means by which to connect to or link to, another object. (Teanor,
et.al, 2006)

Resource- source or supply from which benefit is produced. Resources can

be broadly classified on bares upon their availability they are renewable and
non renewable resources. (Miller and Spoolman, 2011)

Technology- collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes used in

the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives,
such as scientific investigation. (Lidelle,et.al, 1980)

Web browser- used to access the worldwide web.(Esposito, 1995)

Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature and studies to this study.
The review of related literature presented in this study will be made to
enable the researchers to have better insight and clear perspective of the
field under investigation. The related studies also gave the researchers a
keen insight about book or internet as source of information by Grade 11
accountancy, Business and Management of Rizal Technological University
SY. 2017-2018.

Reference Sources and Services

Reference source are generally the place to begin your research,

especially when you're starting out with unfamiliar field. But they're also
where you return when you need to look up formulas, facts, definitions and
other standard details.

Villamin, Salazar and Gatmaitan(1998) states that the references

sources are consultedbfor aid or information on a topic, a theme, a person,
an event, a place, a date or a word. They have distinct values because of
their wide coverage and the concise presentation of specialized
information. Due to the nature, organization and arrangement of these
reference sources, the use of materials are restricted to the library.
9

Questions may be answered completly from the library sources found in

the reference collection.

Referebce services may vary from library to library, but most libraries
have an infoemation or reference desk where assistance from the librarian
is available. Almost all libraries provide reference services via the
telephone and many librarians offer email, text or chat services with a
reference librarian.( Collins et al., 1994)

If you want to use the library of your university, ask the library staff to
grant you special user's priveleges. According to Strong (1993), using the
library efficiently means learning and knowing its layout and sources.

On the other hand, Osawebmaster, n.d metioned that internet is

available almost every where, it is self service, We can get internet facilitu
anywhere as long as we're paying.

BOOKS vs. INTERNET

In 2015, Myrberg and Wiberg metioned in their study that digitally

born textbook is by far the best alternative to print textbooks when it comes
to atudying. Those who prefer to read on screens are originally native
paper readers.

The modern world is so fast that people don't even have the time to
rwad a full new story in the morning newspaper. People prefer to read
online journals and fictions that to hold a book. Despite the comfort provide
10

by this revolutioning facility of the love to be engaged in the bulky books,

people sometimes find it difficult to search, so they prefer to read books
and journal available on the library to be on the suffer side.

Polat(2003) says that the internet swiftly entered the life of the
humankind in the 20th century. It look us less that 10 years to face the fact
of its spreading all over the world including the developing countries. It has
became not only the hugest information resource in the world, but what is
even more important the most rapid means of communication.

As we can see everyday more electronic bulletin boards, new groups,

electronic discussions such as chat rooms and social networking site.
These sites appear on the internet within corporate instruments and on
blogs. (Rainer and Cegleiski, 2011)

In 2001, Shelly, Cashman and Vermaat cited that the internet is a

worldwide collection of networks that links together millions of business,
government agencies, educational institutions and individuals with an
abundance of resources and data accesible via the internet, more than 360
million users around the world are making use of the connected users and
accessing a wealh information. The internet is not the only way you can log
into and browse a network system. Information is alaso available to you.
(Bulsan, 1995)

Advantages and Disadvantages of library

According to fuller (2001), there are six advantages and disadvantages in

using the library that a researcher can encounter. There ar as follows: (1) The
organization found on the library is a big advantage for some people, libraries
11

conjure uo an image of ancient books lining dusty on the shelves; These

people may be discouraged from using library resources as a result. Others
contrast a library unfaronably with the internet as a research tool. (2)
Electronic libraries. Librarians don't have to be public buildings filled with
stocks of books. Libraries in the 21st century can consist of electronically
stored text accessed via databases. (3) Staff help out. Whether on a school
library or a larger library, people searching through a libraries resources
benefit from assistance of the building staff. A head librarian will be present in
even the smallest libraries while bigger libraries feature team of volunteers of
paid recommend books (4) Cataloging allows organization libraries whether
traditional or electronic are always cataloged. (5) Print only resources some
texts and other resources are simply not available in electronic format. (6)
Upadating the library, the facility's usefulness can an occasion be restricted
by the time it takes to be updated.

Reasons to use library

Since we're always gone on the web and used google to find information
before, books should not be, ignored when it comes to getting information. In
2007, Herring stated 10 good reasons why we should use library resources.
They are as follow: (1) Not everything is on the internet. Not everything you
need to know can be found online. There are a lot of published materials that
can't be found on the internet. Your sources are limited. (2) not everything on
the internet is free. You have to pay in using the internetbut before you spend
your hard-earned money on these services, visit first library. (3) The internet
is not very organized. Library sources unlike internet are oraganize in topic.
(4) There is no quality control on the internet. Almost everyone with computer
can can put up a website a they don't have to know what they're talking about.
Library sources have mostly been through editors and facts- checkers who
make sure you're getting a valuable information. (5) Sources on the internet
12

can be harder to verify. Some web pages make it difficult to figureout the
author or where the information came from. (6) The inernet is too new for
some things. The web is relatively new and most sources of information over
10-15 years old have not been digitized or placed on the web. Check out the
library if you're looking for older events. (7) Library online resources are
available 24/7. There's more to the library than books. The articles and books
you find in our online databases and ebooks collection are reprinted from real
live print sources. (8) The internet a mile wide and on such deep. You've
found out websites on a particular topic, but they all give you the same.(9)
You're paying already for the library. Your tuition fees help pay for library
resources. (10) Real live people can help you to use library. Nice, eager,
friendly high trained librarians are standing by waiting to help you find the
information you're looking for.

Computer and Education

Computers have a big part in education system this day. In fact, it is

already a part of curriculum. Computers are very important in everyday living
of student's life.

Adam, Wagner and Boyer cited that computer are part of the educational
scene of students and teachers. Computers have many uses upon which the
future of the students will be built. It provides educational content and
responds to the entries of the student, then apply test to measure what they
have learned. In that intances, computers are involve in managing the
process or in delivering the information. The rates of computer, have grown
as it has been become the basic needs of the students. As every students
know, one of the major application or computers in education has been for
test scoring.
13

Internet is the world's largest computer network. A computer network is

basically a bunch of computers hooked together somehow. Internet permit
any computer on the network to communicate with any other. Internet is a
network of networks, all about exchanging information. College and University
networks have long been part of net and as time goes by elementary schools
and high schools are jorning up. In the past years, internet usage has been
increasing, the net now has estimated 60 million users, with a projected 600
million by the turn of the millennium. (Leven, Boroud and young, 1997).

Shakmov (1998) mention in his study that using internet as a source might
cause a lot of problems. Some people get a piece of information instead of
getting the whole information by getting the book or article. In internet, not all
the grammars and words there are correct. It is also often uncontrolled and
unedited. There might be numerous misprints and misspelling, incomplete
and inaccurate files. Another part of the problem is information overloading.

The Internet provides a wealth of information and functionally available in

different forms. Most of the information is structured with a human user who
will occurs a website using a web browser. Sometimes the information is
useful but you need to see if it is likely to incorporate such information.
(Petroutsos, 2010)

Students and Libraries

Students engage themselves to technology nowadays in terms of getting

information. They are neglecting the use of library that the old generation
used in terms of getting information.
14

Lippincott (2001) claim that students clearly perceived the open the
technology as information universe. This an oppositon to the librarians and
many faculty who perceived the library of the locus of information relevant to
academic work. Students usually prefer the global searching of google to
more sophisticated but more time consuming searching provide by the library.
Students must make separate searches of the online catalog and every data
base of potential interest, after first identifying which databases might be
relevant.

The most useful tool for recommending purposes seems to be listservs,

also known as professional electronic conferences or email groups. It is
recommended to subscribe related to your field. These can be academically
oriented listservs such as those on American history, womens studies,
religion or a listservs for a librarian with a subject focus. ( Yochelson, et al;
2003.

The Importance of the Internet

The most probably helpful technology to get information easily is the

internet. And also it provides the individual uses their own intelligence or mind
to investigate further, this technology should be very useful. Walker(2000)

According to Robin Taylor, internet is very famous nowadays for satisfying

people with various services related to various different fields. It is a very
versatile facility which can help you in completing many task easily and
conveniently with few clicks. It can be any work of daily usage or any specific
service which needs a lot of research and formalities to be done beforehand.
15

The internet swiftly entered the life of the humankind in the 20th century. It
took us less than ten years to face the fact of its spreading all over the world
including the developing countries. It has become not only the hugest
information resource in the world, but what is even more important the most
rapid means of communication. (Polar, 2003)

Exploring on the internet

Everyday we see more electronic bulletin boards, newsgroup, electronic

discussions such as chat rooms and social net working sites. These sites
appear on the internet within corporate intranets and on blogs. (Rainer K. &
Cegleiski C., 2011)

In 2001, Shelly, Cashman and Vermaat cited that the internet is a

worldwide collection of networks that links togete millions of business,
government agencies, educational institutions and individuals with an
abundance of resources and data accessible via the internet, more than 360
million users around the world are making use for the internet for a variety of
reasons, sending messages to other connected users and accessing a wealth
information.

According to Bulsan (1995) why use the internet says that the internet is
not the only way you can log onto and browse a network system. Information
is also available to you.

The management of libraries and information centers

16

Using a library efficiently means learning it's layout and knowing its
sources. If you're looking for specialized information you might want to use a
library that specializes in that subject area. If you want to use a university
library's resources, ask the library staff to grant you special users privileges.
Strong(1993

Habit and attitude appeared to be important, according to myberg,

wiberg(2015) that a digitally born textbook is by far the best alternative to a
print textbook when it comes to studying. But even those who prefer to read
on screens are originally native paper needs. And sees developers make
more user-friendly, e-readers, and authors and publishers learn to fully utilize
of the potential of the e-book.

Internet is the world's largest computer network. A computer network is

basically a bunch of computers hooked together somehow. Internet permit
any computer on the network to communicate with any other. Internet is a

elementary schools and high-schools are joining up. In the past years,
Internet usage has been increasing, the net now has estimated 60 million
users, with a projected 500 million by the turn of the millennium. (Levin,
Baroudi and Young, 1997)

Shalimor(1998) mentioned in his study that using internet as a source

might cause a net of problems. Some people get a piece of information by
getting the book or article. In internet, not all the grammars and words there
are correct. It is also often uncontrolled and unedited. There might be
numerous misprints, misspelling, incomplete and inaccurate file. Another

part of this problem is information overloading.

The internet provides a wealth information and functionally available in

different forms. Most of the information is structured with a human user
who will access a website using a web browser. Sometimes the information
is useful but you need to see if it is likely to incorporate such information.
(Detroutsos, 2010)

Evaluating online sources for academic papers

In 2001, Jerz states that as anyone who's ever put off a term paper will
tell you, good research takes time. If you are writing an academic paper
start in a library database. It is a risky temtation to start with google google
instead. An internet search engine will show you newspaper, magazines,
commercials or activist webpages, instructional webpages, and etc. On the
other hand, internet search engine will show you plenty of sources.

At the present time, although advances are being made, aids to

selection in the media field are inferior in number and often in quality to
those that deals only with books. The most prevalent assistance in
choosing of instructional materials for the school media center. this is a
direct result of a interest to the educators who are alert to the importance of
varied media in the individual's learning process. the determination to make
available to student, teachers and librarians , the best educational ideas,
innovations and resources has recently been translated into action by a
grant from the bureau of resarch of the US. Office of education to the
National Book Commitee. The purpose of this funding is to improve
education media selection centers. (thicks, 1990)
18

Books and Internet are the reference source we use in terms of getting
information. It is consulted by a professionals or expert to make sure it is
reliable and can be use acaemically. The modern world is so fats that the
value of internet when it commes on getting information have been
improved. Digitally born textbooks is by far the rest alternative to print
textbook and more electronnic bulletin boards, news gropus, electronic
discussions such as chatrooms and social net. The internet is not the only
way you can log into and brows a network system. Information are always
available to you. On the otherhand not all information are reliable. anyone
can put information to the internetas long as they have website. Libraries
are more accurate to use to get information. The use of material from a
reliable author are restricted to the library. Due to the nature, organization,
and arrangement of reference sources are strictly monitored. Questiones
may be answered completely from the library source. Reference services
may vary from library to library but most library have an infomation or
reference desk where assistance from the librarian is available. The
oraganization and assistance of the librarian is a big advantage for some
people unlike the self service kind of internet. Students nowadays are
obviously neglecting the use of internet.
19

Evaluating Sources

We have two choices wherever we need on information in conducting

research or finding out an answer in some question . We have books and
Internet that we can relay on it terms of getting infomation .

According to Brouker 2008 , there is or wealth of information available on

the internet . Many students go online to found sources for their papers.
However, students need to be careful about how credible these sources
are. Published works go through a series of evaluations before getting
printed. But information so since anyone can have a website and put
information found may be biased or eroneous.

The internet provide information for teachers , scholars and anyone

needing information to found it all over the world . It is fairly early to locate
information and to published it electranically however. Because anyone can
put imgormation obtained from the internet , everyone needs to develop

Skills to evaluate what they found . (wells-pussins and Ambrose , 2001)

Staff (2001) found out in their study that internet resources cannot be
trusted , nobody knows exactly what is contained in the internet . The
internet can only be trusted if the author provides a full reference to the
paper , based version and if there are articles written by other author that
supports this result . Not all information there are categorized and nobody
20

organizes it , for the mean time , common sens can be used whether or not
to trust the source .

Not all sources found on this internet is realiable . Anyone can post
anything , and some of information found on the net has not been checked
for occuracy , some website use opinion rather than make informed
arquments . Some website seek scandalize than provide reliable
information . Internet ment to be rules turning rather than informative .
Information found there are old and out-to-date . (Jay , 2017)

In 2017 , Driscoll and Brizee state that evaluating resource of information

is an important step in research activity . This section provides information
on evaluating bibliography citations , information ,reading , evaluation ,
print us internet sources and evaluating internet sources .
