Purpose of the course:
Introduces the concepts of systems analysis and design.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course the student should be able to:
i) Understand the business context of Systems Analysis and Design projects.
ii) Understand a typical Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and other systems
development methodologies.
iii) Understand the concepts, principles and terminology of the structured System
Analysis and Design paradigm.
iv) perform a structured systems analysis and design activity on a small-scale system.
Course Description
Components of a generic development methodology. The Life Cycle and its
management. Structured methodologies. Feasibility study. Systems analysis tools and
techniques. System design, implementation and control. Human factors in systems
development. Concepts on evaluation of a system development methodology.
Evaluation of the following systems development methodologies: Traditional System
Development Life Cycle; Information Engineering Method; Propriety Rapid Application
Development, e.g. Dynamic System Development Method; Checkland’s Soft Systems
Methodology; ETHICS methodology; an Object Oriented methodology.
Teaching Methodology
Lecture method, Group activities, Class discussions, Demonstrations and illustrations,
Audio/Tele/video conferencing, and E-learning activities.

The recommended instructional materials for this course include the following:
Overhead projector, Handouts, Charts, Text books, Chalk/white board marker,
