The Global

City
Why Study Global Cities
This lesson emphasizes that globalization is a spatial
phenomenon, contrasting previous lessons that focused on
internationalism and internet-based cultural movements like
K-pop.

Globalization is spatial, taking place in real spaces like cities

and businesses. It involves international investments, capital
flow, and the displacement of poor people. Cities, like Los
Angeles and Tokyo, are both locations and conduits of
globalization. As urban areas grow, globalization is expected
to reach 66% by 2050.
Globalization is spatial, based in places like Los
Angeles, where Hollywood's films are produced and
Sony's headquarters are located. Cities influence
globalization, acting as both locations and conduits,
influencing global forces like the Internet.

Globalization is transforming cities, with urban areas

increasing from 30% in 1950 to 66% by 2050,
highlighting the growing impact of urban living
environments.
Defining the Global City
In the 1990s, sociologist Saskia Sassen
popularized the concept of a global city based
on economic factors, identifying three major
cities: New York, London, and Tokyo. However,
the discussion of global cities has evolved since
Sassen's book, with Los Angeles Hollywood
surpassing New York in cultural importance and
San Francisco being considered a global city due
to dominant online companies.
Some cities are considered "global" simply
because they are wonderful locations to live
in, such as Sydney, Australia's largest city,
which controls most of the country's capital.
Melbourne, however, is referred to as the
world's "most livable city" due to its good
public transit, strong cultural scene, and
relaxed pace of life.
Indicators for Globality

You can give a brief description of the topic you

want to talk about here. For example, if you want to
talk about Mercury, you can say that it’s the
smallest planet in the entire Solar System
The Challenges of Global Cities

Global cities conjure up images of fast-paced,

exciting, but such descriptions are lacking.
And cities can be sustainable because of their
density.
