What’s New
William Shakespeare
26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616)
What is It
In the town of Verona, Italy live the two families, Capulets and Montagues, who are
engaged in a bitter feud. One day, Lord Capulet plans a feast to introduce his daughter, Juliet
who is almost fourteen, to the Count Paris who seeks to marry her.
The Capulets are happy to have Paris in their family because he is wealthy and related
to Prince Escalus. By a mistake of the illiterate servant of Lord Capulet, Montague’s son,
Romeo together with his friend Mercutio and his cousin, Benvolio learns about the party.
They plan to attend the party in Capulet’s hall and since it is a costume party, they can
hide their identity and can roam around undetected. Romeo hopes to see his adored Rosaline,
instead he meets Juliet and they fall for each other instantly.
The Montagues are recognized by Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt and are forced to leave the
party just as Romeo and Juliet have each discovered the other’s identity.
Romeo lingers near the Capulet’s house and talks with Juliet when she appears on her
balcony. With the help of Juliet’s nurse, the lovers arrange to meet the next day at the cell of
Friar Lawrence when Juliet goes for confession, and there they are married.
Meanwhile, Tybalt picks a quarrel with Mercutio and his friends. Mercutio is
accidentally killed as Romeo intervenes to try to break up the fight. In anger, Romeo pursues
Tybalt and kills him.
Prince Escalus decides not to execute Romeo but instead punishes him by making the
latter leave Verona and never to come back again.
Juliet learns the death of her cousin but because of her love and Friar Lawrence’s
arrangement, Romeo spends the night with Juliet before taking refuge at Mantua.
To calm the family’s sorrow of Tybalt’s death, Juliet’s marriage to Paris is arranged.
Lord Capulet and his wife are angry because Juliet does not wish to be Paris’s bride - both
unaware of her secret marriage with Romeo.
Friar Lawrence helps Juliet by providing a sleeping potion. She is asked to drink the
potion the night before the wedding so that when the nurse greets Juliet the next day, she thinks
that she is dead and everybody mourns for Juliet’s death.
Friar Lawrence sends a colleague to warn Romeo to come back to the Capulet’s family
monument to rescue his sleeping wife. The message miscarries and Romeo, hearing instead
that Juliet is dead, buys poison in Mantua and returns to Verona and goes to the tomb where he
surprises and kills the mourning Paris.
Romeo takes his poison and dies just as Juliet awakes from her sleep. She learns what
has happened from Friar Lawrence but she refuses to leave the tomb and stabs herself.
When the Friar returns with the Capulet and Montague, they see the two lifeless body lovingly
holding each other even in death.
The deaths of their children lead the families to make peace, promising to erect a
monument in their memory.
