INTRODUCTION
1.1 Cosmetics
Cosmetics are materials that are used as personal care products with the
intention of coming into contact with the various outside parts of the human
body like nails, hair system, epidermis, and mucous membranes of the oral
cavity for cleaning, perfuming, beautifying, and changing their appearance,
correcting bodily odors, and keeping the surface of the body in a good state
(1). Many different products are marketed under the name “cosmetics” like
shampoos, bath oils, baby products, perfumes, body lotions, personal
hygiene products, and fingernail polish (2,3). The word “cosmetic” is
derived from the Greek word “kosmetikos” which means skilled in
decoration”. Since the dawn of civilization, cosmetics have been utilized by
people irrespective of their race, gender or age to beautify, modify or alter
ones’ physical appearances. Cosmetics or makeup are substances or
preparations used toenhance the beauty of the human body (4)
1.2 Iipsticks
the past few years, lipsticks have gained significant popularity as one of the
most attractive small luxury items, and sometimes even used as an
economic indicator, following
“The lipstick effect” observed in economic recessions [1]. Enhancing one’s
attractiveness and appearance through lipstick relates to a wide range of
colors used to fulfill customers’needs and expectations across generations
and countries [2]. While makeup trends are
constantly evolving, lipstick trends are shifting in response to an increase in
consumers’
personal care demands for natural, sustainable and organic cosmetics [3].
1.4 Types
Heavy metals are elements that are primarily found in the d and p-blocks of
the periodic table showing a metallic character and an ability to form salts.
Some sources specify that heavy metal should have a high density [12].
Such metals include lead, cadmium, nickel, mercury and arsenic amongst
others. The main concern is that heavy metals are ubiquitous and are
present in several matrices both living and non-living. Particularly in living
matrices, heavy metals may interfere with beneficial metals some of the
latter being replaced by heavy metals that
would result in the erratic physiological functioning of bodily systems. This
is not an issue related only to mammals and humans, but such erratic
behavior, in terms of morbidity and mortality has been observed in other
animals, such as insects [13], and also in plants. Some of these heavy
metals accumulate in biological systems and one
source for such accumulation is the daily and/or repeated use of cosmetic
products such as face powders, lipsticks and eye shadows [2]. Some
heavy metals are commonly found in cosmetics [14–20
