Exercise Set 5

this is a “not to be assessed” set of exercises

1) For each of the following sets, determine whether or not it is a subspace of the given space. In each
case, if the set is a subspace, verify that the defining conditions of a subspace hold, while, if it is not
a subspace, give an explicit example which shows that one of the conditions does not hold.

b) For R , the subset S =  x2 : 5x1 − 8x2 + x3 = 4

d) For R , the subset S = : x1 + 25x2 = 0

2) Consider the following vectors in R4 :

        

1 4 4 2 −3
0 5 5 0  10 
v1 = 2 , v2 = 8 , v3 = 5 , v4 = 4 ,
       w= 
 15 
2 8 8 3 2

a) Use row reduction to verify that the set {v1 , v2 , v3 , v4 } is a basis for R4 .
b) Express the vector w as a linear combination of the vectors v1 , v2 , v3 , v4 .
c) Use the determinant method to verify that the set {v1 , v2 , v3 , v4 } is linearly independent.
