In recent events, it has become apparent that external factors have far reaching

consequences for a business. In example, the Transnet ports have been backed-up,
causing delays in the imports of many items for Woolworths Holdings Limited. This
Business Report will discuss the different business environments, as well as providing
some solutions that the business can apply to achieve its goals.

Business Environments

The business environments refer to the invisible forces that have a direct/indirect effect

on a business, and which should be addressed to achieve its goals. These can be
^ ^ ^
divided into three different environments namely the Microenvironment, Market
^
Environment, and the Macro Environment. Each of these have different tools that can
be used to evaluate the challenges that a business might face. ^

Microenvironment

This environment refers to the internal environment of a business. The business has

full control over the challenges that it might face within this environment. In example,
^ ^
a business can decide or adapt its vision, mission, goals and how they apply their
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
business functions (Human Resources, Finance, Production, Purchasing, Marketing,
^ ^ ^
Sales, Admin, Public Relations).

The tools that can be utilized within this environment would be SWOT (only the

Strengths and Weaknesses can be considered for the internal environment) and and

Environmental Scanning could be done.
In example, Woolworths can consider their Weaknesses, such as HR politics, and turn

More people are becoming aware of the impact that businesses leave on the
environment as well as how businesses could meet its stakeholders’ wants and needs.

Customers often base their decisions on this when considering who to buy their goods
from. Therefore, for Woolworths to ensure that they maintain a good customer base,

they must investigate and follow the principles of sustainable development to ensure
that they give back to their stakeholders. This Business Report will discuss what a
CSR and CSI programme entails and how Woolworths can decide on implementing
the correct one.

CSR

Corporate Social Responsibility refers to a businesses’ obligation to ensure that

stakeholders’ are protected and that their welfare is promoted. A business must act in
^ ^
an ethical manner by considering the principles of sustainable development (meeting
^
the wants and the needs of the current generation without impeding on the wants and
the needs of the future generation).

There are two types of CSR namely Primary CSR and Broad CSR. Primary CSR refers

to stakeholders that are directly affected by the existence of the business, iow, the
^ ^ ^
business’s responsibility towards the business itself, shareholders, customers,
^ ^ ^
suppliers, competitors. Broad CSR is aimed at stakeholders that are affected by the
^ ^
business indirectly such as the government and local community.

Shareholders have an interest in the performance of the company, since they expect
^ ^
a good Return on their Investments. Woolworths; being a public entity; have a greater
^
responsibility towards their shareholders. This responsibility includes following the
principles of Good Corporate Governance and Integrated Reporting. Woolworths can

ensure that it’s performance

The wellbeing of the employees is dependent on the performance of the business in
terms of profit, as well as the internal environment of the business to ensure a happy

environment.

Woolworths can ensure that bring in an incentive-based measure, they can introduce
a “Fun-Wednesday” for the employees where they can wear funny hats. For example,
the security guard at the entrance could be given a different type of uniform relating
the “Fun-Wednesday”, the cashiers funny glasses and the waiters at the Café can
have roller-skates.
