T he chilli that looks like a carrot!

T he chilli was first found in South America, but has quickly become popular around the world, with most countries
growing them. Of course, the heat of the sun does make the flavour of the chilli hotter, so some climates are better
than others.

But what about countries that normally experience cooler temperatures? Well, there are lots of options to choose
from. [1] It’s called the ‘Bulgarian Carrot chilli’, but it’s not from Bulgaria and it isn’t a carrot! T his chilli is very thick
and crunchy, which makes it a great ingredient to add to salads and salsas or even to put on your favourite pizza! So
why is it given that name? Well, it’s because it’s bright orange in colour and is shaped like a carrot.
T he plant produces chillies that can be picked in July, which is earlier than many other varieties. It doesn’t grow very
tall (only 75 cm). [2] T hat’s because it originally came from Hungary. T he temperatures there can be very low in
winter. It’s a good variety for those who have never grown chillies before or for those who don’t like chillies to be too
hot in taste. But what if you do like your chillies very spicy? [3] T he Scorpion chilli from T rinidad was the hottest chilli
in the world until 2012. But the following year, a new chilli took that title. [4] It was first made available to customers
by Ed Currie from Rock Hill, South Carolina, in the United States. T he heat of chillies is counted in Scoville Heat Units,
and the Reaper has an average heat of about 1.5 million – with some being over two million!

As long as you handle them with great care, chillies are very good for you. T hey have more vitamin C than oranges and
can help headaches and colds. [5] So next time you eat a chilli, you can be sure it’s a healthy option as well as being
tasty!
