Systems in Action - Chapter 2 and 3 Test Review

You may bring in a cue card (or cue card sized paper) with formulas on it.

● Know the 6 simple machines (What are they? How do they work? What are
some examples of each? Are there different versions? Eg. class 1, 2 and 3
levers, different types of pulleys)

● How do we represent forces? What are some examples of forces?

● Label all the forces on an object in motion using arrows to show magnitude and
direction.
Eg. Mrs. Trudgeon pushing the chromebook cart down the hallway.

● Calculate force and the force of gravity acting on an object (where a = 9.8m/s2).

Eg. Find the gravitational force on a rock that has a mass of 94 Kg.
● Friction - what is it? Explain the two types (static and sliding). How can we
overcome friction?

● What is the difference between ideal and actual mechanical advantage?

● Calculate mechanical advantage.

Problem examples:

1. If Suzanne has to pull 21 m of rope to lift a load 7 m in the air, what is the
mechanical advantage of the pulley system? Did the pulley system make this job
easier?

2. Jarod is using a lever to pry up cement blocks. The effort arm length is 90 cm
and the load arm length is 15 cm long. Determine the mechanical advantage of using
this system.
● Calculate work.

Problem examples:

1. Ali pushed his dirt bike up an inclined plane with a force of 855 N. The inclined
plane is 2 m long. How much work did he do?

2. Orion pulled up on the garage door with a force of 575 N of force, but he couldn’t
get it to open. How much work did he do?

3. Ella lifted a book with 220 N of force, 20 cm off of her desk. How much work did
she do?

● What is energy? Energy loss?

● Give some examples of how energy can be transferred or transformed.

● Name a system and explain how it could be more efficient.

● Calculate mechanical efficiency.

1. Find the mechanical efficiency of a pulley system in which Alayna has to input
360 N force and pull a rope 1.5 m, in order to lift a 300 N load 1.25 m off the
ground.

2. A lever is pushed down 0.9 m with a force of 275 N and lifted a 750 N box up
0.3 m. What is the mechanical efficiency of this system?
