Experience Designer’s Showcase

Name: Sydney Pexton

Final Display
My designer’s purpose was placed in the top right corner of my display. I wanted people to
understand that the words, “intention, transform, and thrive” are what motivated my design.
This was demonstrated in an illustration I made of myself painting with those three values.
Shapes of people are at the center of the illustration to represent human-centered design.
The next part of my display is the need: college students need to be intrinsically motivated to
improve their eating habits because there is a knowledge-action gap when it comes to
healthy eating. I displayed a drawn and written version to make it clear to the audience what
the need was. A written version of my solution and instructions on how to interact with the
prototype were displayed on the right-hand side. Just below the display are copies of the
class syllabus I created for people to edit. To incorporate absorption into my experience, I had
a healthy snack in front of my display so people’s tastebuds could be satisfied as they
participated in my prototype. Above my core display were posters that I created, advertising
the class and drawing people’s attention toward my booth. Lastly, the QR code to my
reflection survey was printed largely and placed at the bottom of my display to end the
prototype experience.

Initial Prototype

Background information
The solution I came up with is a hands-on SWELL class at BYU where students can learn
about healthy eating habits in a practical way. Many college students have the desire to eat
healthier but are faced with time limits. This class saves students’ time by giving them the
opportunity to meal prep healthy meals while at school. Here are some questions I had about
my solution and its prototype:
● Will it increase college students’ self-efficacy and therefore make them more
intrinsically motivated to improve their eating habits?
● How can I stage this experience with limited time?
● How do I help people feel like they are in class with this prototype?
● What food will they learn to make?
● How would I measure impact/results?
● How can we make this class worth their time?
The purpose of my prototype was to validate my idea. I wanted to discover if the solution I
came up with would actually address the need.

Insights Learned From In-Class Feedback

After gathering feedback in class, what did you learn?
● People loved the pumpkin protein bite snacks
● Overall people think it is a great idea and suggested I pitch the class idea to BYU
● 90% of people identified with the need
● 90% of people say they would take this 1-credit class
● 100% say that based on the class syllabus they read, they believe the class would
increase their intrinsic motivation to improve their eating habits
● It is important that the students leave this class with resources to use at home when
the class ends like a class cookbook
● Take dorm environments into consideration, may not have access to many kitchen
things
● Have part of the course focus on helping people learn what their body needs and
what works for them vs not
● Consider making participation a greater part of the grade
● One week of the class could focus on “good, better, best” options and natural vs
processed ingredients
● People love the activities that would take place in this class making it experiential
● Consider eating disorders, should that be talked about in class?
● Make sure to not grade students on their cooking skills but their willingness to
participate
● How long would the class be? How many times a week
